The Campus o the University o Derby on the site o the ormer Royal

Devonshire Hospital, has the largest unsupported Dome in Britain. The vastcentral space beneath the dome is home to a cae and restaurant. Pop in ora coee and watch the swing on the Foucault Pendulum hanging rom thecentre o the Dome. The original Spa o the Hydropathic Hospital oers a rangeo treatments.

A short walk rom Broad Walkleads you to Pooles Cavern and the exciting GoApe adventure circuit in the Country Park. For the sports enthusiasts, Buxtonboasts two 18-hole gol courses, gol driving range, swimming pool, cricket,ootball and tennis clubs, as well as an exciting go-karting experience.

Buxton Crescent, one o the nations most important buildings,was created by the Fith Duke o Devonshire with John Carro York, one o the leading architects o the 18th century tochallenge Bath as a thermal water spa report.

Linked to the Natural Baths, the building with ingenuity includedtwo hotels, one o which accommodated a majestic ballroom andbetween them six lodging houses. Over 200 years ago, the Dukeand his architects vision oresaw todays international plethora ospa hotels but Buxton has a special advantage - we are blessedwith Grade 1 Georgian Architecture and Natural Thermal Water.

Our project is to restore, update and reinterpret to the highest ocontemporary standards the concept borne o a great Georgianpartnership.

In 2014, we hope to open the frst hotel o its kind and certainlythe frst to open its doors in Buxton or over a century. Theheart o Buxton will beat once more and the Town will reallybe Buxton Spa attracting visitors rom across the world.In this endeavour, we are working with the Town to realise ashared ambition to recreate the architectural heritage and theTowns reputation or health and well-being alongside its gainedreputation or culture, art and hospitality delivered with glamourand panache.

A walk down Market Street, will bring you to ST ANNES CHURCH, built in 1625,just o Bath Road. A little urther on in Dale Road, you will fnd the lovely ST MARYS, afne example o Arts and Crats building, built in 1914.

At the bottom oHALL BANK, an elegant line o town houses dating rom the1790s, you come onto BROAD WALK, a ashionable terrace o houses designed by avariety o prominent architects rom the 1860s to the 1880s.

THE PAVILION GARDENS, designed by Edward Milner and opened in 1871 on 23acres o land given by the 7th Duke o Devonshire, were restored to the original layoutin 2000. Here, along the banks o the River Wye, are the imposing Bandstand, the SnailBack garden, miniature railway and lakes lled with a variety o water birds and the six-metre ountain.

THE PAVILION, originally the Winter Gardens, now houses a cae, coee bar, conservatory,shops and the Pavilion Arts Centre restored to its ormer glory and re-opened as a fexibleperormance venue in 2010.

THE OCTAGON, designed by Robert Rippon Duke was opened in 1876. It now houses avariety o airs, auctions, concerts and events.

Next door, is the SPA SWIMMING POOL & FITNESS CENTRE.

THE OPERA HOUSE, designed by Frank Matcham, was opened in 1903 andrestored in 1979. One o the nest provincial theatres, it presents a varied programme omusic, drama, comedy and dance throughout the year.

Opposite the Opera House you will see an original Penold VICTORIAN POSTBOXinstalled in 1867.

ST JOHNS CHURCH was designed by John White & Son in 1811 in a neo classicalTuscan style. The church is not only a place o worship, but also home to the Buxton

Musical Society. The designers were also responsible or the colonnaded town houses inTHE SQUARE.

Dominating the Buxton skyline is the dome o the DEVONSHIRE CAMPUS oDerby University. The Dome, with a circumerence o 46 metres, built by Robert RipponDuke in 1882 or the Royal Devonshire Hospital, sits on the original building by John Carrwhich housed the horses and servants o the guests o the Crescent hotels. The generalpublic are welcome to use the many acilities, including restaurant, coee shop, hairsalon, and holistic Spa.

Heritage & Architectural Trail

THE CRESCENT was built by the th Duke o Devonshire in 1784 to provideaccommodation or visitors attracted to the town by the health-giving Spa. Designedby John Carr to rival the Royal Crescent at Bath, it was a Georgian leisure centre withtwo hotels, apartments, shops, coee and card rooms and a magnicent Assembly Room.Work is now in progress to restore this Grade 1 listed building to its ormer glory.

THE PUMP ROOM opposite was built in 1894 by Henry Currey as an addition to thewater treatments o the time and in use until 1981. It will be re-opened as part o theCrescent Development.

THE NATURAL BATHS, on the site o the original Roman Bath, was built between1851 and 1854 and will orm the centre piece o the Spa Pool and treatment rooms othe hotel.

To the right o the Crescent is the CAVENDISH ARCADE. Originally designed as a thermalbath in 1854, it now serves as a speciality shopping arcade. It eatures the original plunge

bath and the interior still has most o its Minton tiling and a striking glass barrel vaultedceiling by Brian Clark.

Presented to the Town in 1940, the prominent ST ANNS WELL is constantly ed withSpring Water at a temperature o 28 Centigrade and stands next to the Pump Room.

Nearby, at the entrance to Spring Gardens, is THE CHILDRENS WELL.Made o pink granite, it was presented to the Town in 1886.

THE SLOPES rising in ront o the Crescent were designed by Sir Henry Wyatville in1818 and modied by Joseph Paxton in 1840. I you ollow the paths through the treesyou will notice that together with the Crescent they orm a complete circle.

At the top o the Slopes, stands the imposing TOWN HALL, designed by WilliamPollard in 1889.

THE MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY has since 1928 occupied part o the ormer

Peak Hydropathic Hotel. There is a permanent gallery enhanced throughout the year byexhibitions, workshops and events.

THE MARKET PLACE, ocially the highest in England, is ringed by some o theolder buildings o the town which make up the Higher Buxton shopping area. It hasan open market every Saturday and Tuesday. Here you will also nd a variety o pubs,restaurants, wine bars and clubs.

The MARKET CROSS, relocated in 1813 to mark the Royal Charter awarded to BuxtonMarket is situated on the Town Hall Piazza.

Next door to the University is the imposing PALACE HOTEL. Completed in 1868 itwas one o a number o grand hotels built or the numerous Spa visitors.

The great FAN WINDOW by Joseph Paxton is all that is let o the two Fan Windowsthat sat at the ends o the Railway Stations.

The th Duke o Devonshire built THE OLD COURT HOUSEwhich now houses avariety o speciality shops.

The oldest building in Buxton is part o THE OLD HALL HOTEL. It was originallybuilt by the 6th Earl o Shrewsbury and housed the captive Mary, Queen o Scots, whovisited a number o times between 1573 and 1584 to take the waters.

Just outside the town, is POOLES CAVERN, one o the seven Wonders o the Peak,extending or over 300 metres into the limestone o the hillside above the town. Evidenceo Bronze age dwellers and Roman metal work has been ound and it provided a useulhide or an inamous outlaw who gave the cave its name. Conducted tours are availableall year round.

Together with GO APE, an aerial rope walk through the trees o The Country Park, or awalk up to SOLOMONS TEMPLE, there is much to do and see.

The Victorian CIRCULAR PARK ESTATE, like other parts o Buxton, was laidout by Joseph Paxton. In the middle is the Cricket Ground, ringed by houses o variedarchitectural styles including a ormer residence o Vera Britten and the LEE WOODHOTEL.
