Higher efficiency with optimised process stages Optimising processes and costs ofyour production plant means per-fect tuning of all components. Ac-cording to your specific require-ments, we design and build com-plete single or multi-stage plants invarious kinds of configurations, in-cluding thin film evaporators, shortpath evaporators and complete dis-tillation column systems.

Depending on the requirements, static evaporators may be used inupstream stages of thin film andshort path evaporation systems. Fal-ling film evaporators, forced circu-lation evaporators, natural circula-tion evaporators or rising film eva-porators can significantly improvethe efficiency of your complete system.

If necessary, the vapour stream gene-rated from the thin film evaporationstage can be separated in distillationcolumns.

Thin Film Evaporators

Economic solutions for demanding tasksThin film evaporators solve difficulttasks in distillation, concentration, de-gassing, drying and reacting. The ro-tors mix the product and distribute itas a thin film over the heat transfersurface. The excellent heat exchangeproduced by the agitation and thethin film yields an immediate evapo-ration of the volatile components.

Thin film evaporators offer many ad-vantages compared to other evapora-tor types. Due to the high turbulencein the liquid film, they are able to pro-cess viscous, fouling and soiledliquids in a continuous and reliableprocess. Temperature sensitive pro-ducts experience a gentle treatment inthe evaporator, due to the short resi-dence time and the narrow residencetime range. The high heat flux allowsa high evaporation rate and high eva-poration ratios in a single pass. Addi-tionally, the thin film evaporator iseasy to regulate and to adjust tochanging operating conditions.

You should consider its benefits• if you have to produce high product qualities in an economic way,

• if you need a production plant withhighest process reliability and availability,

• if you want to optimise energy costsand reduce service and maintenance costs.

Largest product range worldwideBuss-SMS-Canzler has the largestrange of thin film evaporators in theworld. As the technology and manu-facturing leader, we offer our custo-mers the security of a process solutionbased exclusively on product qualityand profitability.

We choose the right solution, optimi-sed to your process requirements, fromour broad range of products, whichincludes• different rotor designs (fixed clearance, wiped film),

• vertical or horizontal orientation,• cylindrical or conical body design,• co-current or counter current vapour flow.

Working temperatures up to 500°CBuss-SMS-Canzler thin film evapora-tors can also process products withhigh boiling components, as for ex-ample our inductively heated INDU-THERM®, which reaches operatingtemperatures up to 500°C.

Low service and maintenance costsService is not only a matter of plan-ning, but also a result of design.Modern mechanical seal designs,low-maintenance bearings, the pre-cise balancing of our rotors and thequality of our heating jackets are thedecisive factors for the smooth run-ning of our evaporators. The result isminimised wear even under extremeconditions.

Conical Thin Film EvaporatorsSAKO

The conical heating section guaran-tees the constant wetting of the sur-face area, even with small concen-trate quantities.

The horizontal SAKO is suitable forproducts with viscosities up to70.000 mPa·s. The conical construc-tion reaches a continuous film for-mation, even with high evaporationratios. The co-current flow of vapourand product allows for the feeding ofoverheated liquids directly into theunit (flash evaporation). The horizon-tal evaporator provides longer resi-dence time. Therefore it can also beused as a reactor.

Vertical SAKO in test facilityEvaporator module with horizontal SAKO

Two flexible all-roundersYour process and space requirementsdecide whether the vertical or the ho-rizontal evaporator type SAKO isused. With either design it is possibleto adjust the gap between the rigidblade and the heat transfer surface –thus allowing you to change the thick-ness of the film.

The vertical SAKO processes productswith viscosities up to 50.000 mPa·s athigh evaporation ratios. By adjustingthe gap, you change the residencetime and optimise the diffusion con-trolled evaporation. This is a conside-rable advantage with degassing pro-cesses, when minimum residues oflow-boiling components are required.

7

Short Path Evaporators

Perfect for temperature sensitive productsShort path evaporators offer excellentresults with evaporation, concentra-tion, distillation or degassing of high-boiling temperature sensitive products.

The internal condenser minimises thepressure drop because of the shortdistance to the evaporation surface. Therefore, short path evaporatorswork with process pressures down to0,001 mbar (a) and correspondinglylow boiling temperatures, thus beingable to evaporate even extremelyheat sensitive products like vitaminsand flavours without causing damageto the product.

Established rotor solutionYour requirements determine which ofthe following rotors will be selected: • hinged metal wiper blades• radially moving elements • rotor in hygiene design

The wiper blades are variable in formand weight and are adapted to theproduct requirements. For special ap-plications, in which metal contactmust be avoided, the wiper bladescan also be fitted with edges of tem-perature resistant synthetic materials.

Evaporation Technology for Top Quality Products:Polymers, Specialty Chemicals and Petrochemicals

ResinsSynthetic resins, such as acrylic re-sins, alkyd resins, amino resins, epoxy resins, hydrocarbon resins, phenol resins, polyester resins or sili-cone resins are used for multiple pur-poses, including hot melt adhesives, binders in paints, coating systems orcasting, gluing and laminating resins.

Important resin properties, like lowsolvent residues, elimination of re-acting residues, specific viscosities orsoftening points, are achieved in oursingle or multi-stage thin film andshort path evaporation systems.

Waxes

Highly pure paraffin waxes are veryprecious substances used as food ad-ditives, as well as in the pharmaceu-tical and cosmetic industry. Waxesare used as solid fuel, separatingagents, lubricants and polish, or inthe processing of polyolefins.PE waxes which are used as glue ad-ditives and coating components aremanufactured in thin film evaporatorsby distilling short chain olefins to spe-cific softening points. Even withchanging process requirements andproducts, the flexibility of our plantsassure you the best possible productquality.

Largest multi-stage short path evaporation plant in the world for the production of soft and hard waxes

Isocyanates/PrepolymersIsocyanates are basic components forthe production of polyurethanes.Basic materials for the prepolymerare multifunctional isocyanates, likeTDI (Toluenediisocyanate), MDI(Methyldiphenyldiisocyanate) or HDI(Hexamethylendiisocyanate), and va-rious polyols. Unconverted isocyana-tes are toxic and must be eliminatedfrom the prepolymer as completelyas possible. Safety regulations con-stantly demand lower residual con-tents, which can no longer be reachedwith conventional technologies.Depending on the original concentra-tion of isocyanates, lower residual le-vels can be achieved in a single ortwo-stage evaporation process.

The first stage distillates the majorpart of the isocyanates. The secondstage reduces the isocyanates contentto the permitted residual contents. Thereactivity of the prepolymer requiresthe separation of the isocyanatesunder high vacuum at specific tempe-ratures.

Our horizontal thin film evaporatortype SAKO meets the challenges inthe first evaporation stage. Depen-ding on the specific requirements, weeither use a vertical thin film evapo-rator or a short path evaporator inthe second stage. In pilot trials, weoptimise the evaporator configurationfor the specific isocyanates-polyolcomposition. Buss-SMS-Canzler deli-vers key equipment and engineeringfor this demanding application.

High-purity lactic acidThe sales price for high-purity lacticacid is determined by quality featuressuch as the concentration of high-boi-ling components, water and CO2.High-purity lactic acid must be clearwith a colour index below 20. Buss-SMS-Canzler’s integrated two-stagesystem for evaporation, droplet sepa-ration, rectification and condensationhas proven to be an industrial designthat meets all the requirements of aprofitable high quality lactic acid pro-duction. A result, which is not reach-able with conventional thin film andshort path evaporators.

Recovery of resources in the terephthalic acid production processThe recovery of acetic acid and valu-able catalysts is an essential part ofthe profitability of the terephthalicacid production process. Continu-ously operated specialised thin filmevaporators are used in this recoveryprocess instead of ineffective agitatedvessels. The units are constructed ofmaterials like titanium and nickel al-loys and have heating jackets desig-ned for steam pressures of more than100 bar. The rotors utilise conveyingelements which allow these units tohandle viscosities up to 200.000 mPa·s.Buss-SMS-Canzler thin film evapo-rators provide the following advan-tages for manufacturers of tereph-thalic acid: operational reliability, high on-stream time, constant productquality, long service life, low mainten-ance costs and profitable operation.Two-stage thin film evaporation plant

Environmental Protection and Recycling:Reusable by Evaporation

Production waste waterProduction waste water from the che-mical and pharmaceutical industriescontains volatile organic compounds(VOC) and inorganic salts. Vapourstripping or distillation removes thevolatile components in the water va-pour. Single or multi-stage evapora-tion recovers process water fromsewage. A thin film evaporator ordryer is used downstream to furtherreduce the volume and, if necessary,to produce a dry solid waste, whichcan be landfilled or burned. Multiplestage evaporation and distillationplants of Buss-SMS-Canzler havebeen successfully operated for manyyears for the economic treatment ofproduction waste waters. Our custo-mers appreciate their efficiency aswell as the significant reduction inwaste disposal costs that they pro-vide.

Used oil distillationAs oil prices continue to increase, used motor oil has become a more valu-able raw material. Buss-SMS-Canzlerthin film evaporators are used in thecritical distillation steps of this reco-very process. In the first stage morethan 85% of the pre-treated used oilis evaporated at process pressures upto 10 mbar and process temperaturesup to more than 300°C. In the se-cond stage the thin film evaporatoroperates as column reboiler. The va-pours are fed into the distillation co-lumn, base oils with defined visco-sities are side products for furthertreatment. Buss-SMS-Canzler thin filmevaporators have proven their relia-bility under highest operational de-mands in more than 25 used oilrecovery plants worldwide.

Many companies use Buss-SMS-Canzler continuous single or multi-stage plants for their solvent recoveryoperations. For streams with low con-centrations, static evaporators, likefalling film evaporators or plate eva-porators, are used. Our highly effi-cient thin film evaporator reliablyachieves the best recovery forstreams with high degrees of impuri-ties, such as solids, resins, polymersand other viscous products.

Solvents recoveryIn the fine chemicals, pharmaceuticaland cosmetics industries solvents ac-cumulate during the production pro-cess. Solvents act as extractors in theoleochemical industry and they areused extensively in the production ofpesticides, detergents and paints aswell as in the pharmaceutical industryfor the production of API (Active Phar-maceutical Ingredient).

FoodBuss-SMS-Canzler has expertise in the concentration ofgelatine, cocoa, cheese, coffee, milk, sorbitol, sugar/sugar derivates and seasonings.

As an alternative to the classic quali-fication systems Buss-SMS-Canzlerrealizes a scientific and riskbased verification of the machinesand plant systems according to ISPEGuide and ASTM.

Patented hygiene designConventional short path evaporatorswith tubular condensers do not meetthe requirements of the hygiene de-sign. Therefore, Buss-SMS-Canzlerhas designed a short path evaporatorwith CIP cleaning capabilities. Thisspecial design allows your productionplant to utilize short path evaporationtechnology and meet the challengesof hygienic requirements.

Omega-3 fatty acids capturethe marketOmega-3 fatty acids, which are obtai-ned from fish oil, have many positiveeffects on our health. They are produ-ced in a multi-stage process.

Buss-SMS-Canzler short path evapo-ration systems are designed to pro-vide for the exact mixing ratio of theOmega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA inthe desired concentrations.Fish from certain areas have a highcontent of pesticides in their fat tissue. The Buss-SMS-Canzler short path eva-porator process reduces the pesticidecontent below the limits for food andpharmaceutical products. Our sys-tems operate exactly and reliably tospecific process parameters for theseoperations and ensure that the heatsensitive product is not damaged.

The highly efficient heat recovery andthe optimised recirculation of by-pro-ducts like glycerine and di- and trigly-cerides allow our plants to reach ahigh level of profitability.

LecithinThe horizontal SAKO dries the wet le-cithin sludges produced in the degum-ming stage in one single step to amoisture content below 1%. This hori-zontal thin film evaporator processesthe lecithin, which passes highly viscousphases during drying/dehydration,very gently under vacuum at tempera-tures up to a maximum of 120°C.Subsequent fast cooling to a tempera-ture below 60°C improves the storagecapability of the dehydrated lecithin.

More than 100 Buss-SMS-Canzlerhorizontal SAKO lecithin dryers areused worldwide in renowned compa-nies of the edible oil processing indus-try. For special process requirementswe also offer cylindrical vertical ma-chines with rigid blade rotors, whichoffer advantages depending on the re-quired product quality. Both units areoften part of an entire drying plantthat has been designed and deliveredby Buss-SMS-Canzler.

Vitamin E/A Our multi-stage short path evapora-tion systems are successfully used forthe concentration and separation ofnatural tocopherol (Vitamin E) fromsoy oil. Tocotrienol (Vitamin E) und beta caro-tene (Vitamin A) are obtained frompalm oil. The high vacuums achievedin our short path units allow these verytemperature sensitive substances to beprocessed at very low temperatures.

No matter whether you use vegetableor animal fats and oils as raw materi-als, our systems will reach monogly-ceride concentrations of 90 – 96%with excellent product quality and sta-bility.

Biodiesel:Evaporation Technology for Profitable Fuel Production

The quality of the produced biodieseland glycerine, the treatment of theraw materials, the recovery of the re-actant and the treatment of the cata-lysts are process stages, which arecrucial for the profitability and the en-vironmental compatibility of the bio-diesel production process.

We have delivered process stagesand components for biodiesel plantswith capacities up to 250.000 t/a ofbiodiesel and 30.000 t/a of glyce-rine. We are specialized in the deli-very of the following plant compo-nents:

Biodiesel Drying Our types of flash or falling film eva-porators reach specification conformbiodiesel with residual moistures be-low 200 ppm water.

Biodiesel DistillationBiodiesel from used edible oils must beimproved by distillation.

For the production of specification con-form qualities Buss-SMS-Canzler sup-plies entire distillation plants for singleand multi-stage cleaning.

Valuable By-products For the processing of by-productsfrom the biodiesel production, Buss-SMS-Canzler delivers established tech-nology for important process stages, like the drying of potassium sulphate.

Methanol DistillationOur distillation column recovers theexcess methanol from the aqueousglycerine containing mixture produ-ced during transesterification. Therecovered methanol is pure enough tobe reused in the transesterificationprocess.

Glycerine Concentration The forced circulation evaporationplant dehydrates the glycerine to alarge extent and removes the me-thanol. Glycerine losses are almostentirely reduced by the cleaning ofthe vapours with a small reflux.

Glycerine Distillation The glycerine column processes thedehydrated glycerine to a high-purityproduct. The salty concentrate ex-tracted from the column is processedin a special thin film evaporator. Theglycerine vapours are re-circulated tothe distillation column and the residueis discharged either as liquid or aspowder. This ensures a high yield ofglycerine.

Glycerine Bleaching Downstream cleaning stages deo-dorise and bleach the technicallypure glycerine and improve the co-lour index, resulting in pharmaceu-tical quality glycerine.
