Who are we?SOTERIA LTD is a new start up joint venture between two professionals who in their

own capacity have vast experience in the field of health and safety respectively.

Indeed, Stephen Micallef, one of the directors at SOTERIA Ltd. has been the director

of Fire and Security Engineering (FSE) for the past 15 years which throughout its

operation has grown from a small fire and burglar alarm installer, to one of the main

local Fire and Security engineering companies in Malta. Stephen Micallef is also one

of the founding directors of Front-Line Ambulance Service (FAS) Ltd. which for the

past 2 years has offered private medical services, including the transportion of

patients using a fleet of 10 emergency ambulances. The other director at SOTERIA

Ltd. is Etienne Scerri who is a registered competent professional with the

Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) and with more than 9 years

experience in occupational health and safety practices both in Malta and abroad.

Today, Etienne Scerri is the director of OHS4SME, an organisation which for the

past 3 years has been specialising in occupational health and safety consultancy

and auditing. Both Stephen Micallef’s and Etienne Scerri’s backgrounds and

experiences proved to be the springboard in establishing SOTERIA Ltd, a company

that is certain to develop an innovative and professional set up which will provide the

first avant guarde facilities in Malta to host a wide spectrum of service providers in

the field of health and safety.

The FacilitiesSOTERIA LTD. has just acquired a new site to operate as the main facilities of theorganisation.

These facilities entail:

A number of offices to be used by affiliated experts which they can use tooffer their services from.

8 classrooms of different sizes and equipped with the latest training facilities. A practical training area including a large indoor facility equipped with the

necessary equipment for practical training of fire training, working at heightsexercises, scaffold build training and also lifting equipment training.

The core of SOTERIA LTD. is health and safety training in all levels of safety, thuswe are continually affiliating with accreditation bodies to ensure high level training toour clients that would be recognised internationally.

The course content and methodology is designed to facilitate learning andunderstanding in an engaging and pragmatic way. The course is multi faceted usingthe following techniques:

Knowledge learning via written material; links to further reference where required byspecific individual needs; reflective learning exercises; practical exercises takingstudents on step by step processes, for example risk assessments and accidentinvestigations.

Student undertaking the course are encouraged to assess their knowledge andunderstanding through a variety of media such as quizzes, case studies, mock exampapers and projects with access to online tutor support.

Ultimately we want students to finish the course and pass their exam, passrecommendations onto others to take the course with us, and look forward to doingthe refresher course in a few years time.

Manual Handling and LiftingReducing Aches and Pains at Work

Course Objective:

Research has shown that 80% of any population will suffer from at least one episodeof back pain in his/her life. You don’t have to be a stone mason to suffer a liftinginjury. Every day life requires us to lift from the most simple and light objects to theheavier cumbersome ones.

This lecture introduces the ideal posture in the upright position and during a lift. Itdiscusses various lifts that should be used in different circumstances and the riskassessment that should be carried out before the lift.

This interactive one and a half hour lecture is designed and delivered byphysiotherapists.
