“I had the ambition to not only go farther... but to go as far as it was possible to go.”Captain James CookJames Cook (1728-1779) was a remarkable navigator and explorer, whose legacy is still with us. His three voyages across the Pacific had profound influence on many areas of human endeavour: astronomy, marine surveying, cartography, geography, natural history and anthropology.

With its campuses and study centres throughout Queensland and in Singapore, internationally awarded JCU is a wise choice for students seeking a high-ranking, culturally diverse education that will equip them to make a difference in their world. JCU students have unique opportunities to gain academic knowledge and genuine, real-life experience Australian and international employers are looking for.

The University’s tropical location and proximity to World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics Region have strongly influenced the course options offered. More than 40 per cent of the world’s population now lives in the tropics and this is likely to be close to 50 per cent by 2050. The region generates around 20 per cent of global economic output and is home to some 80 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. JCU is recognised worldwide for the quality of research and educational programs that further tropical knowledge – ecology, medicine, environment, sustainability and marine biology.

Named after Captain James Cook (1728-1779), the remarkable navigator and explorer who was the first to map the coastline of eastern Australia, JCU also maintains a deep commitment to the Indigenous peoples of Australia. Few universities provide the breadth of Indigenous educational opportunities that

JCU offers. The whole University community values and celebrates the achievements of its many distinguished Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, graduates and staff.

An over-riding goal of the University is that when JCU students graduate, they will possess internationally-recognised qualifications, as well as leadership skills and self-reliance that will help each one take their place in the career of their choice and make a valuable contribution to local and global communities.

An exceptional education• JCU has earned its place among the top 4 per cent of universities around the world (see Academic Ranking of World Universities).

• The University achieved the Australian Government’s highest ranking of “Well Above World Standard” for its research in the areas of Environmental Science and Management, Ecological Applications and Medical Microbiology (see Excellence in Research for Australia National Report, 2012).

• JCU’s Professor Jim Burnell, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was named 2011 Australian Lecturer of the Year.

• Over the past five years, JCU academics have been awarded 39 National Awards for

Teaching Excellence by the Australian Teaching and Learning Council (now called Office for Learning and Teaching).

• JCU was awarded five stars for ‘Success In Getting A Job’ (see Good Universities Guide, 2012).

Management, accountancy, banking, marketing, advertising, human resources, events management, stock broking, investment/financial management, business development, market research, health management, brand management…

There’s a whole world of exciting career options awaiting JCU Bachelor of Business graduates.

Today’s business world is constantly evolving, and JCU ensures that the courses we offer our students keep up to date and are relevant to genuine business needs. Your JCU Bachelor of Business will expose you to a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge covering regional, national and international business operations.

First you’ll study core business subjects that give you an understanding of today’s dynamic Australian and global business environment. Then you’ll make your own specialist subject choices that will equip you to achieve your dream career.

In addition to the vital core skills, at JCU you’ll learn to deal with the particular challenges of operating businesses in the tropics. You’ll explore important issues like working without supervision, dealing with the challenges of remote locations, and developing a keen eye for tropical sustainable business opportunities. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be ready to contribute to the growing tropical business industry sector.

You can add value to your qualification by choosing a second major area of study, in areas such as law or communication design. Or you might select two minor areas that complement the main focus of your degree.

There are so many choices you can make to help you achieve your career goal. Your value to potential employers will be enhanced, and if you choose a double degree, your studies will take only a little while longer than a single degree to complete.

You’ll expand your global view, studying real-life issues like the global financial crisis, emerging markets and Islamic banking.

As a JCU student, you’ll gain both theoretical knowledge and real-life business experience. You’ll participate in authentic industry projects, learn from visiting industry leaders, and conclude your course with a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience. WIL is an excellent way for you to gain industry experience while networking and enhancing your job prospects.

Indigenous student supportIf you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, the faculty is committed to helping you find successful and productive career pathways. We employ a full-time Indigenous Support Officer to assist you with academic, financial and mentoring support if you need it. Scholarships and bursaries are available, while other resources include the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (TAS) and the national Indigenous Cadetship Scheme (ICS), which provides supplementary wages and work experience. Visit: www.jcu.edu.au/study/indigenous-students.

Study abroad You can also apply to study abroad at JCU’s Singapore campus, or at one of our 30 exchange partner universities around the world. You can study subjects relevant to your course while overseas and receive credits towards your JCU degree when you return home. Participation in the Student Exchange program is subject to faculty approval. To learn more, email <[email protected]> or visit www.jcu.edu.au/studentexchange.

Study online (external)If distance, family or work circumstances seem to be a barrier to studying for your JCU Bachelor of Business, our flexible course delivery could be the solution. You will be able to study at a time most suited to your busy schedule.

All study materials are provided online, and you won’t be left alone as you study. You’ll be able to chat with other students and your lecturer through the online discussion forums, and that way you can keep in regular communication with your lecturer.

JCU’s comprehensive online library resources will enable you to undertake research at times that suit you. If you live close to our campuses take the opportunity to attend a class and meet your lecturer.

Accountancy is constantly evolving. E-commerce and environmental accounting (measuring the environmental costs of commercial decisions), are emerging areas at the cutting-edge of commerce. There is more demand today for accountants to provide information and integrated reporting on sustainable business practices to aid decision-making.

With corporate collapses and global market uncertainties having a devastating impact on the business world, the role of the accountant is central to operating and maintaining a financially strong and successful business in the face of fluctuating and often unstable conditions.

Course overviewThe initial core subjects studied in Level 1 (first year) provide a sound basis on which to build your accounting major. Course highlightsIf you’re aiming to become a professionally qualified accountant, this course is your best choice. Your future career prospects will be strengthened by including a number of broader business subjects in your course to assist your transition into the business world. The course provides you with many career opportunities and equips you with the broad skills base that can be applied to a range of business careers.

Banking & Finance Business Major

What is Banking and Finance?Banking and finance is a critical component of today’s globalised economy. All organisations are affected by banking and finance decisions with respect to the granting of credit, making investments, managing risk, and the unitisation of banking services.

The banking and finance major shows how institutions manage risk, how markets trade risk and how new instruments to control risk are being developed. The major focusses on financial markets and institutions and how they are managed, and will give students an insight into the central role of banking and finance in the modern economy. It provides an understanding of the function and operation of globalised financial markets. The major assists students to develop key skills required in a wide range of real world banking and finance roles.

Course overviewThe initial core subjects studied in Level 1 (first year) provide a sound basis on which to build the Banking and Finance major. Through the following two years of your course, you will advance your knowledge and skills in the banking and finance area from basic finance to finance of international trade, risk management and treasury management. Through your studies in this major, you will learn different approaches to managing financial institutions including commercial banks, rural cooperatives and microfinance institutions. Examining the financing of international trade, and the role of lending to small and medium-sized enterprises as a driver of sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region are key highlights of the major.

EconomicsBusiness Major

What is Economics?Economics examines how individuals, businesses, governments and other organisations make decisions concerning the use of finite resources such as time, land, machinery and labour. To manage these limited resources, decision-makers rely on information gathered from recognised economic data, apply analytical techniques, and interpret data to provide solutions or approaches to manage demand of scarce resources. Economists involved in regional development sectors such as the tropics are often focussed on sustainability – using regional resources in the best way – to advise government and grow businesses in the tropics, but also to help people improve their quality of life.

Course overviewThe initial core subjects you study in Level 1 (first year) provide a sound basis on which to build the Economics major. Subjects in the Economics major cover a variety of topics from ‘big picture’ issues such as inflation, exchange rates and dealing with international financial crises, to managing natural resources, competition and deregulation, health, education, valuation techniques, policy implications on Indigenous communities, money illusion and loss aversion. Specific regional economic issues relating to wealth of natural resources, and the large geographical region, have implications for quality of data and relevance of mainstream policy.

Course highlightsWhile you will cover a broad body of knowledge, this major is unique, as your knowledge and skills are extended through addressing a range of regional issues. These include sustainability, Indigenous perspectives and policy implications for the region, valuation techniques to assess natural resources that are unique to the tropics, and examining Southeast-Asian markets in close proximity to our region. You can complement your Economics major with subjects offered almost anywhere else on campus (as long as you satisfy prerequisites), allowing you to customise your economics degree to suit your own particular interests.

Professional recognitionAs a graduate you will be able to apply for membership of The Economic Society of Australia and internationally, The American Economic Association, Royal Economic Society and the European Economic Association.

Career opportunitiesTop graduates may be offered cadetships and scholarships by key employers such as the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Federal Treasury, the Department of Finance and Administration, and the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics. The skills you will acquire by the time you graduate from a versatile economic toolkit, which can be used to help solve the challenges associated with a wide variety of economic and social issues. This solid base makes JCU Economics graduates very successful in finding employment as professional economists in a range of areas:

• Consulting• Economic policy development• Economic modelling• Investment and trade• Banking (merchant, trading and reserve)• Natural resources and agriculture • Non-government agencies• Private industry – Economic Advisor• Federal, state and local government departments• Research organisations and universities.

A wide world of possibilitiesThere isn’t much today that doesn’t involve Information Technology. It’s a huge, fast-growing source of career choices. There simply would not be another career where your skills are required by so many industry sectors. So if your passion is IT, JCU’s Bachelor of Information Technology helps you to gain the broad-based knowledge and skills you’ll need to build a rewarding career in Australia or internationally.

You’ll learn the theory and practice of creating, monitoring, operating and maintaining IT systems through studies of software, software engineering, multimedia, databases, games design and networking. Your skills will be the ones that are critical for so many sectors that they’re too diverse to list.

Your JCU IT degree teaches you more than just to work with computers and peripheral systems. You will leave university as a graduate with enhanced communication skills, an understanding of business fundamentals, and with the ability to critically analyse situations and devise solutions.

You can choose from two JCU Bachelor of Information Technology majors:

1. Computing & networking This is the most flexible of JCU’s two majors and bridges the gap between pure computer science and IT application areas such as business, science, medicine, finance and the media. Choose a field that fascinates you as an elective, then gain an understanding of it so you can design systems and solve problems specific to that field’s needs. There are also opportunities to learn advanced programming

techniques in a variety of programming languages, giving you strong software engineering skills.

2. Interactive Technologies & games design This major prepares you with the core skills required for employment in the enormous and fast-moving global entertainment industry and beyond. You’ll learn specific creative design skills required for game development and animation, and programming languages for mobile phone technologies.

Dream big dreamsImagine. With technology changing so rapidly and often, your JCU Bachelor of Information Technology could be your first step to building a career that helps you be a leader, moving your team towards a confident and amazing future. Or you could make your mark as the creator of games or systems yet to be imagined. Or perhaps you will be developing applications for smart phone technologies.

What you’ll experienceAs a JCU Bachelor of Information Technology student, you’ll experience a friendly, open learning environment, with small group tutorials and plenty of opportunity for hands-on practical sessions. Through regular meetings with your lecturers and peers, you’ll have a voice and the opportunity to have direct impact on your course, course materials and subject delivery. That way, you can influence what you’re learning.

You’ll discover that JCU information technology staff are highly qualified professionals who have

genuine industry experience to share with you. They care about your success. You will also benefit from their extensive research on issues affecting IT around the globe, and from guest lecturers and industry connections.

You will have access to some of the latest software and hardware available. In addition, your JCU lecturers understand how vital it is that you are exposed to, and able to utilise, the latest technologies. JCU computer laboratories provide specialist facilities for software engineering, project management, networking, multimedia/game design and programming.

Importantly, at JCU we’re keen to give you opportunities to build professional and personal networks that will help you as you begin your career. Associations you start at JCU are often forged for life through the strong JCU Alumni community.

A balanced lifeYour JCU lecturers understand how hard it can be to balance the demands of family, work and study, so the Bachelor of Information Technology offers subjects in a flexible schedule. When it is difficult for you to attend lectures on campus you may decide to take advantage of JCU’s screencasting of lectures (video and audio recording of lectures that are accessible on the internet).

Some JCU lecturers record lectures and tutorials using Camtasia, capturing the computer screen, audio, video and annotations made using a graphics tablet. This means students can go home and revisit lectures they may have missed anytime during the semester.
