Tips• Use apple cider instead of water• You can use flavored oatmeal such as maple syrup and brown sugar or apples

and cinnamon.• Don’t have molasses? Mix two teaspoons of sugar for every five teaspoons of

pancake syrup and stir.• If it says to put it on cookie sheets but it seems too runny go ahead and put it in a

muffin tin.• When you sell a horse, give a bag of different treats with the horse’s paper work

and a list of his skills(western, jumping, bathing, clipping, etc) and his likes anddislikes. This gives the new owner some background information and sometreats to get them started.

• For the holidays give your horse owning friends paper bags of horse treats. Paintor stamp the outside of the bag with horsey themes and the names of theirhorse(s). Then tie the bag shut with fancy ribbon. If the treats are sticky or needto be in air tight containers place them first in plastic bags and then into thepaper bag.

• In some recipes you can use oatmeal in place of bran.• Buy fun shaped cookie cutters such as horse shapes, horse shoe shapes,

Christmas tree, and angel shapes for Christmas.

Make HorseChristmas TreatsHere are some fantastic horse treats for Christmas! You can put them in your

horses stall on Christmas Eve to include your horse in the Christmas spirit.

Horse Cookies

Ingredients:• 2 cups dry oatmeal• 3/4 cup grain• 3 cups bran

• 1 cup molasses

Instructions:

Mix oats, grain and bran together in a bucket.

Drizzle in molasses while mixing with your hands.

Cut into fun shapes such as horse or horseshoe shapes and place themon a cookie sheet.

Bake at 375º for 8 minutes.

Christmas Mash

Ingredients:• 1 lb bran• 1/2 cup sweet feed• 4 packets of Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal• 4 packets of Apple and Cinnamon Oatmeal• 1/3 can of regular oatmeal(or 4 packets)• 3 cups Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran Cereal• 1 apple• 3 carrots• 4 oz molasses

• Hot water

Instructions:

Mix dry ingredients in feed bucket.

Add enough hot water to just cover the dry ingredients and let set for 12minutes.

Add molasses and stir.

Which is better:oats or pellets?

Pelleted feeds from the major companies,especially the premium product lines, aremade from good quality ingredients andare under careful quality control. They aremore balanced with respect to minerals

and vitamins than straight grains like oats and tend tobe more digestible.

The hulls of oats tend to be indigestible, which is whyyou see them in the feces. There is no real problemwith that. While oat kernels are a good source ofenergy, they do not supply the calcium and mineralsneeded for proper bone development of young horses.Even with abundant good quality hay, young growinghorses should be on a commercial mix (pelleted orotherwise).

Pelleted feeds got a bad reputation early on when theywere first introduced in the 70’s because some weremade from inferior ingredients. However, the reputablecompanies do not include substandard ingredients intheir top of the line products. Pellets are more balanced,and you can easily pick a product with the nutrientprofile you need (e.g. higher fat for a hard keeper, lowstarch and fat, high fiber for the easy keepers, etc.)without adding supplements.

I am engaged in a debate over nutritionwith the barn owner where I currentlyboard. Several of the boarders, includingmyself, feed a pelleted feed; but the barnfeeds straight oats. They have mixed

some oats in with the pellets of the boarders. The barnowner insists that pellets are a low quality feed and thatthe ingredients used are cheap and inferior. However,my experience with my pellets has been good. Thehorses’ manure is always full of oats or oat hulls. Myfeeling is why feed something they can’t totally digestwhen science and technology has provided a bettersubstitute? I would appreciate your opinion of com-mercially available pellets and their effectiveness ornutritional value.

1, 2008 for championship titles in the Lil’ Cowpoke Rodeo Association. The“short go” finals rodeo was held at the Lee County Posse Arena in N. Ft. Myers.This new organization awarded local youth for competing in some unusual andchallenging events. These kids are doing great things for the community and forthe ranching heritage of Florida. They are battling it out in events such as, goatteam roping, breakaway goat roping, breakaway ranch roping, stock sorting,chute doggin’, goat tying, barrel racing, and pole bending. Even the little tikesget involved in the Lil’ Cowpoke events of stick horse barrel racing, stick horsepole bending, and goat tail untying for ages 2-5. It was great fun for all involved.They are looking forward to watching the kids enjoy the 3 new events beingadded for next years schedule: dummy wild cow milking, the obstacle course, andranch cutting/penning.

The association is excited to bring new events to the youth in ourcommunity. They are aimed at teaching sportsmanship, socialization, andhorsemanship skills through their unique rodeo events. Three SW Floridafamilies came together and built this association; 2 of which do not even havechildren it the club; they are just doing it for the kids. The Higginbotham familiessay that “all the hard work is worth it when you see the smiles on the children’sfaces!”

There were many more winners and so many people who made it allpossible. So many new friendships were made and there are more to come. Theassociation is a “wallet friendly” club who is centered on making great thingspossible for these kids. They run 6 rodeos a year within SW Florida from Naplesto Arcadia, from Immokalee to Clewiston. The new year will begin in April of2009. Horseback Safaris - Standardone-hour, two-hour, or three-hour horseback safaris areavailable daily. HorsebackSafaris can be arranged forriders with varying levels ofexperience. All guests should beat least 12 years of age; 10 years of age is an acceptable agewith proven riding experience. Guests weighing more than275 pounds will need to be assessed by our EquestrianDirector before they are allowed to take a Horseback Safari.Call-in reservations are recommended in order to assure thatwe and our horses are ready for you.

A favorite with visitors is our two-night “Crescent JCattle Drive Weekend Safari,” which includes some training inFlorida Cowhunter skills of ridin’, ropin’ and cow cuttin’.(Florida cattlemen weren’t “cowboys” because hunting thosewild Spanish-descent cattle in Florida’s woods and swampswas a man’s job, they said.) Choice of campground dependson weather, type of group and recommendation of the ridinginstructors.

Another favorite is similar, but shorter – anOvernight Trail Ride Safari combined with a next-day“Rawhide Roundup.” More time is spent riding the wilder-ness trails of Forever Florida and learning about nature, lesson cowpoke skills.

Corporate Co-workers, Schoolteachers, ProfessionalClub, Flying Clubs, School Groups, Church Groups, Families,Friends, Scout troops or multi-troop Camporees – there areactivities and a campground on Forever Florida or theCrescent J Ranch that are just right for a bonding experience.See the Facilities and Events page for more details.

From a small primitive one-troop Scout Camp onthe Crescent J that has been used by Girl and Boy Scouts formore than 30 years, we expanded to a remote but up-scalecampground ‘way back in the wilderness of Forever Florida,then added two campgrounds in between and most recently,a large area “up front” (near the highway) that comfortablyholds up to twenty Scout troops for a big Camporee.

Variations on these basic campouts and safaris canbe worked out with our staff.
