“Got Milk?”Photo submitted by Joan Lisi.

Page 4 October 2013
Photo left: The newborn fawn who is without a “family” and wantsto be able to find a new “mother.” My son Matthew, age 12 at thetime, knew how to gain her trust and how to quietly offer a new“friendship.” The fawn slowly left the flower garden, bravely climbedthe path to the young boy, risked her “anonymity” and asked for food. She was heard asking Matt, “Got Milk?” She then began to suckleMatt’s earlobe to no avail. The Capen Hill Director soon emergedwith a bottle of “fawn milk” and all were safe and happy.
The fawn was placed at the Norcross Center where she couldmature and engage with others in her new surroundings. We stillremember the events of that day. Matthew is now a young man witha love for animals.

TOM’S TREE TIPS: by Thomas Chamberland ISAA monthly compendium of gardening and landscape tips and tricks for the care and enjoyment of your gardens, trees and shrubs.
• A reminder that the fall web worm is build-ing their nests out on the ends of tree and shrubbranches (the spring web worm usually nests inthe crotches of trees). Although unsightly, theyare not really hurting the tree through defoliationas the growing season is now starting to end. Ifyou really must, remove by hand or prune outjust what is nest. Do not try to burn out the nestas this will also burn the bark of the tree, result-ing in death to that area of the tree.
• The early brown leaf drop we are experienc-ing is from Fungi and excess rainfall in May andJune. Note which trees in your yard were affect-ed, spraying them with a fungicide next springand removal of the leaves and disposal this fallwill help your tree next year.
• Mulch: Now is the time to look at the mulcharound your trees and shrubs. Mulch should beraked to loosen to the top surface tension so fallrains can easily penetrate to the soil. Pull weedsand crab grass to remove next year’s seed supply.Mulch thickness should be no more than 4” andnot piled against the stem of the tree or shrub, this “mulch volcano” damages the bark surface ofyour plants, allowing fungi to invade, weaken andeventually kill your plants.
• Most woody stem shrubs and trees can beplanted this month, this is a great time to shopyour local nursery, and they will have manyplants on a deep discount this time of year. Keepall newly planted plants well watered until theground freezes.
• Stay alert for frost warnings, because pump-kins, winter squash, and gourds need to be harvest-ed and stored before the first hard frost, which wecan usually expect by the middle of the month.
• Plant a cover crop of winter rye or oats in bareareas of the garden. Cool season cover crops willadd organic matter to the soil when tilled in nextspring.
• Don’t forget to sketch a map of this year’s gar-den. Next spring you will want to rotate how youplant your garden so to have this sketch will be a bighelp.
• With cold frosty nights, now is the time toshut off outdoor lines, drain hoses, and when com-pleted turning over your garden, clean, sharpen andlightly oil your tools for that long winter storage.
• Like tree tips? Consider ordering the 2014UMass Garden Calendar. The UMass GardenCalendar offers daily gardening tips, beautiful colorphotos and lots of information. For more informa-tion go to www.umassgardencalendar.orgIf you have a tree or plant related question you would liketo see answered in this column, send me an email [email protected]

Today the use of complementary and alternativetherapies in the U.S. are being re-invoked and re-established to regain the lost healthfulness of life. This is mainly due to the adverse side effects of syn-thetic drugs, that people all over the world are nowturning once again, to natural remedies and healing
modalities. Back in 1999 when Istarted my first holistic day spa, fewpeople were familiar with alterna-tive therapies, so I am personallyexcited to see the resurgence ofinterest in these modalities.
Aromatherapy being my favoriteand is one of the most effective and safe comple-mentary therapies which can be incorporated withalmost all other spa treatments: facials, massage, scalp, and body services. The oils can be used topi-cally, internally and aromatically to work on us atthe physical, physiological and psychological levels.
Plant essential oil is a complex synergistic mix ofvarious organic chemicals having varied effects.Aromatherapy can be used at two levels; esthetical-ly and therapeutically. Another advantage is it canbe used in conjunction with traditional medicineand all other healing modalities which is why it istermed as a complementary therapy.
Essential oils embody the regenerating oxygenatingand immune – strengthening properties of plants.
They are powerful antioxidants, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and antiseptic. Theyare shown to destroy bacteria and viruses whilerestoring balance to the body, making it a great alter-native for the upcoming flu and cold season.
The quality of the extracted oil is of extremeimportance. Anything less than certified pure thera-peutic grade essential oil may not produce thedesired results and can, in some cases be extremelytoxic. So those who are beginning your journey intoaromatherapy must actively seek out therapeutic cer-tified grade oil. Helpful hints: Since essential oils areso potent and because some essential oils may irri-tate the skin, they are often diluted in carrier oil.
The most useful oil for stimulating the immunesystem and fighting viruses of all kinds in children, including flu, chickenpox and measles is tea tree oil.A few drops of tea tree oil, lavender and frankin-cense can be used in a diffuser throughout the dayand night.
Lice are a common problem, especially amongschool children; lavender, juniper, eucalyptus andtea tree are very effective in ridding the hair of liceand preventing their return.
And for the moms, lavender, ylang ylang, sandal-wood and a cup of chamomile tea can help encour-age a relaxed state of mind.
Enjoy
