FULL STEAM AHEAD…Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon celebrates its 5th anniversary with its annual Steam Gala event on Saturday 19th September and Sunday 20th September. This fabulous event has something for families and railway enthusiasts alike. Visitors will have the chance to see several guest locomotives, alongside the museum’s impressive regular displays.Visiting locomotives include Planet and NCB22. Planet is a replica of an original 1830 locomotive from the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, and is on loan from the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. NCB22 was a stalwart coal-hauling engine in Co. Durham, and will be shown at the event by the Bowes Railway. In addition, the event will feature Furness No. 20, the museum’s operating locomotive in residence and the oldest standard gauge steam locomotive in Britain still working. Also, the historic model Orion will be on show, helping its owners, the Stephenson Locomotive Society, celebrate their centenary.In addition, Oliver Cromwell will be arriving at Locomotion on the evening of Saturday 19th September, for display on the Sunday of the Steam Gala. Part of the National Collection, Oliver Cromwell hauled the last steam train on British Rail in August 1968.Visitors will have the chance to see some of these locomotives in light steam, and there will be demonstration movements throughout the weekend. Plus, visitors will have the chance to access footplates of the locomotives in steam between their turns on the passenger trains.

In addition to the locomotives, there will be vintage traction engines on display, along with a fair organ providing old fashioned music.Inside the museum there will be displays and stalls from local railway heritage societies and preserved lines. There will also be a selection of model railway layouts and traders.As well as all of the above, visitors can enjoy Railart 2009: the Annual Exhibition

MAYOR SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON CREDIT FRAUD

Shildon Mayor Gareth Howe has spoke of his anger at the reporting of credit card fraud in Shildon. Various national newspapers and television outlets, including the BBC, reported that over a quarter of online transactions made in Shildon were made via card fraud. Many reports focused on the proportion fraudulent transactions rather than the actual number of fraudulent transactions commited, Cllr Howe believes this may have gave many of those who saw the reports a false impression of the town. Cllr Howe said, "With reference to recent reports of credit card fraud in Shildon. I would like to set the record straight, after speaking to Durham Constabulary Fraud Unit, it would appear that the actual crimes were committed abroad and the only connection is that a Shildon person was conned into handling the parcels to be forwarded abroad."I am absolutely appalled at the way this incident was reported

on TV, radio and in national newspapers, and we hope that Shildon's reputation as a hard-working, honest town can be restored. "We only hope that if anyone is approached to forward parcels or money abroad that they contact the police immediately."The Crier understands that packages obtained through card fraud were sent to the address of a Shildon woman who was conned by a man from Afghanistan whom she had met on an internet chat-room.Detective Inspector Geoff Smith, who heads the economic crime unit at Durham Constabulary, said, "This woman was a victim of crimes which probably originated outside the country, and certainly not in Shildon""Unfortunately, this woman was gullible and agreed to have van-loads of parcels delivered to her home."It has thrown up a statistical blip which came out in the report."

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX APPEAL UNDERWAY

The Sylvia Kelly Memorial Christmas Shoebox Appeal is once again working hard to spread joy and compassion this Christmas. Every year the group send packages to those less fortunate, sending knitted wares and boxes full of goodies to children in Eastern Europe and Africa. Although the main drive will take place in November, it is not too early to send your unwanted items, which may be the only gift these less privileged children receive this year.Ideal items include toys or something to play with such as a ball, bear, yo-yo, building blocks or puppets, educational supplies such as felt pens, pencils, sharpeners and notebooks or hygiene supplies, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap or comb. You can also include something to eat or wear, such as sweets, gloves, hats, sunglasses, scarves and bangles. They also ask for £2 donation with each shoe box to cover the cost of getting them there.The appeal, which has been running for many years, relies on the hard work of its members, as well as public generosity, a spokesperson for the group elaborated, he said, “The annual Sylvia Kelly Memorial Christmas Shoe box Appeal is well under way, with our team members busy collecting and covering empty shoe boxes and sourcing items for filling. Of course, our core team members work the year round, as when we have delivered over our boxes to the International charity Samaritans Purse in mid November we are already planning for the next year. Our intrepid knitting team, from Tow Law/Firtree, are already delivering

large consignments of knitted garments, and we appeal to any one with spare balls of wool to kindly donate them to the cause. Last year we broke our record by handing over 1280 filled boxes and £700.00 to help with transportation.“Once again we appeal to the public to support our efforts to get as many boxes as we are able to send to countries in Eastern Europe and Africa. It is always thanks to the public generosity that we are able to make such a significant effort to help those more needy than ourselves. Since the beginning of our work we are always mindful of our purpose typified by our slogan 'Make Your Christmas Happy By Making a Child Happy'."As in previous years, the group are happy to receive contributions at any time, but organisers will be making their main effort, producing boxes in Ferryhill Methodist Church, in the week commencing

Monday 9th November at 6.00pm each evening. The group’s spokesperson added, “We would extend a cordial invitation to attend the church service on Sunday 15th of November when it is given over to dedicating the boxes before dispatching them on their way to the regional collection centre in Consett.“To all members of the public who wish to contribute in any way to this worthwhile cause please contact Bob Kelly on 01388 720253 who can offer guidance on which items are acceptable for filling boxes. APPRENTICES JOIN THE RAIL RESTORATION TEAM

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum in Shildon is pleased to welcome two apprentices to the team. Johnny Molloy, 20, from Shildon, and Jason Brown, 17, from Darlington, have recently been appointed as NRM Apprentices in the museum’s Conservation Workshop.Over the coming months, Johnny and Jason will work on a range of rail restoration projects, whilst also studying for a BTEC qualification in Operations and Maintenance.Johnny and Jason will gain invaluable hands-on experience on various projects, including the restoration of a Smith steam crane and the restoration of a Hunslett Austerity locomotive.Locomotion’s Conservation Workshop Manager, Richard Pearson said, “We are delighted to welcome Johnny and Jason to the team, and look forward to giving them the opportunity to develop practical skills which will help them in their

future career.”Visitors to Locomotion can follow the progress of projects in the Conservation Workshop, thanks to the viewing platform within the museum’s Collection Building.

The Conversation Workshop at Locomotion is supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Sir James Knott Trust. The NRM Apprentices are supported by special project conservation funds.

ELM ROAD W.M.C. LEEK SHOW

The annual leek, flower and vegetable show at Elm Road W.M.C. will be held on Saturday 26th September and Sunday 27th September 2009. All exhibits must be benched by 1.00 pm on Saturday by noon. The show will be open

SHILDON ATHLETE AT WORLD

CHAMPIONSHIPS?Shildon athlete Michelle Scott, 24, is appealing to sponsors to help her attend the Biathlon World Chamionships, which will take place in Monaco on Sunday 20th September.In the past year Michelle finished 2nd at the Biathlon World Cup and was successful across other disciplines too. Michelle is very ambitious, over the coming year she is aiming to become the Northeast Triathlon Champion, to finish top 5 of her Age Group Triathlon Championship, to finish in the Top 3 of the Biathlon European Championships and to be in the Top 5 at the Biathlon World Championships.Michelle started competing in Modern Biathlon events, which involve swimming and running, when she was 13. She was ranked 4th in the world and she held this position until she was 15 years old.Michelle continued her training, as well as adding further disciplines (horse riding, shooting and fencing) to her repetoire, in order to compete in the Modern Pentathlon.Michelle joined the army at the age of 16, and was given the opportunity of training full-time with the Great Britain athletics team, which is located

at Bath University.Now, after a successful pentathlon career, she has decided to return to her original discipline, the biathlon. The biathlon begins with a 1,500m run followed by a dive into the sea to swim 200m before getting back out to run another 1,500m. WITNESSES SOUGHT AFTER VANDALS

STRIKEPolice are appealing for help in tracing the vandal, or vandals, who damaged a vehicle that was parked in Windsor Terrace, Shildon, on the night of Wednesday 2nd September.The £17,000 Citroen Picasso had the bodywork cover of the petrol cap snapped off, the front passenger side door was dented and there was also an attempt to pull the near-side wing mirror off.

Dear Editor,My daughter attends Tearaways Youth Theatre Group, who practice on a Monday night, between 6.30 and 8.30 at Timothy Hackworth school. Unfortunately, as we live about half a mile from the school, and as we live in a sad, wicked world, this means that because of my concern for my child's safety she is dropped off and collected outside of the school. This is creating annoyance to the neighbours living in the surrounding

streets, parking for 5-10 mins to drop off and the same waiting for it to finish. As the school is not open for teaching at these times, there is no risk of causing an obstruction like there is at the start and end of school.What do they want people to do, let the children walk in the dark and risk getting abducted or even worse? I for one will continue to park outside the school at these times as my car is taxed, tested and insured

and no-one is going to risk the safety of my child for the sake of being put out for a few mins each week, I don't care who they are and where they live. What amazes me is why live in a house near a school if they don't like the implications that come with it? Kimblesworth are likely to be champions of both divisions of the Readers Durham County League, and on Saturday both of their sides defeated their counterparts from Shildon Railway Cricket Club. At Kimblesworth, Shildon’s 1st XI made 151 all out, the highlight being 100 not out from Chris Peareth.

In reply the home side made 152 for 6 with Timmens and Garbutt each taking two wickets.At the Sportsfield a much depleted 2nd XI were reduced to 75 all out and the visitors cruised to victory by eight wickets.Next week sees the final fixture of the season with the 1st XI

away to Willington.The Annual Presentation Night takes place on Saturday 19th September at the Sportsfield Social Club at 7.30 p.m. Trophies for the top batsman and top bowler will be presented for each of the senior teams and players will vote on the night for the two players of the year.

HORSE'S LATE SHOWUndefeated after 2 league games, Grey Horse over 40’s played at home to table topping Consett, also undefeated after 2 games, and scored late on to secure a 1 – 0 win.Horse got off to a good start and played the Consett side off the park with fluent passing play, however, despite Horse having plenty of the ball and creating chances, they were not rewarded with any goals and the first half ended scoreless.With the resolute away defence being put under constant pressure, chances were again created and missed by Horse in the second half. Jeff Dixon blasted over from 4 yards out and Pat Bowtell should have hit the target after a cross field pass picked him out in front of goal, but again the opportunity to open the scoring was wasted.The home defence looked

fairly comfortable against a decent Consett attack with ‘keeper Ian Shepherd alert to tip over a solitary strike on goal. The impressive Neil Wilson spurned a great chance to score after running past the away defence, from the half way line into the goal area, before fluffing his chip into the grateful Consett ‘keeper’s arms. With time running out, second half sub Marty Joyce latched onto a pass just outside the box and fired a blistering first time right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net for the only goal of the game.An improved all round team performance, Darren Foster with the Man of the Match award, but the side’s management feel that more of the numerous chances created need to be converted to maintain a place at the top of League 2. DENE VALLEY COMMUNITY GYM

The One Stop Shop on High Street, Eldon Lane, now has a Community Gym. The Gym is open Monday – Friday from 7.30am until 4.30 pm and Sundays 11- 2 pm and boasts a range of fitness equipment for use by the general public. The gym is staffed by trained volunteers who will provide you with an induction

showing you how to use all the equipment. The cost of using the gym is £1.25 per session, which usually lasts an hour. RAILWAYMEN CONTINUE POOR RUN OF FORM

Shildon continued their frustrating start to the season. The side, still badly depleted by injuries and suspensions, welcomed two new signings, in the form of Andy Johnson from Tow Law Town and ex Blyth Spartans player Shaun Reay, both players went straight into the starting line up. It was 11 minutes before the first shot of the match, and it was Consett who had the opportunity, which went well wide. Consett had a second effort, this time testing Shildon ‘keeper Finch, before Phil Brumwell had to leave the field after 22 minutes due to injury, he was replaced by Wayne Clarke.After 24 minutes some neat interplay between Reay and Byrne saw Reay drive a powerful effort at goal, only to see it punched over the bar by Daniel Staples in the Consett goal. Shildon continued to put pressure on Consett but after 27 minutes a Consett goal came against the run of play. Gary Brown brought down ex-Shildon player Emson, Steve Huggins, another ex-Shildon player, stepped up and made it 0-1.

Brown quickly redeemed himself with a thunderous effort from 30 yards out, the ball was struck with such venom that the Consett ‘keeper could only help the ball into his own net. The game ebbed and flowed, Byrne headed tamely at the ‘keeper from a Karl Everitt cross before Justin Keegan headed clear from under the Shildon bar. Before half-time Consett survived two strong penalty appeals, one a handball and the other a push in the back, the score as the sides went in was 1-1.Ten minutes into the second half Wayne Clake allowed Emson to steal the ball and cross through a crowded Shildon penalty area for Christopher Scott to make it 1-2 to Consett.Shildon’s disciplinary problems continued when, on 60 minutes, a midfield scuffle ended with Shildon’s Karl Everitt being given a straight red card for threatening to heat-butt an opposition player. After the sending off Consett began to assert pressure, with Scott working hard and shooting at any opportunity. Emson was also causing problems and in
