Welcome to the 2015 edition of the Burnaby Seniors Guide to Health and Well Being. The guide is a listing of services for and stories about seniors 55+ and their families. We are proud of the ongoing partnership between

Burnaby Community Services and the Burnaby Now to publish resource guides which empower people to improve their lives and their community.

The inclusion of agencies and businesses in the guide do not constitute an endorsement, nor does omission constitute disapproval.

For more information about services in your community please contact Burnaby Community Services at 604-299-5778 or visit www.BbyServices.ca.

Stephen D’Souza,Executive Director, Burnaby Community Services

We are pleased to team up with Burnaby Community Services again to create our Annual Seniors’ Guide to Health + Well-Being. We’ve expanded this year to include resources in New Westminster as well.

In these pages we’ve compiled a variety of resources, information and organizations to help Burnaby and New West seniors make the most of their “golden years.” Alternatively, when you need support, guidance or resources, the guide has a wide spectrum of services and agencies right here in our own communities.

Seniors now make up the fastest growing segment of society – and are enjoying their retirement years like never before, thanks in part to living more active, healthy lives.

We’re excited about this opportunity to help local seniors live their best “golden years” possible.

Have you or someone you love recently received a dementia

diagnosis?

The Alzheimer Society of British Columbia is an invaluable place to start to gather information during what can be a diffi cult and overwhelming time.

“I would say, generally speaking, get as much education as you can,” says Vivian Tsai, support and education coordinator at the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C.

Tsai recommends visiting her organization’s website for information on living with dementia, services and programs near your area, what to expect, self-care, managing changes and living with loved ones who have dementia.

The education workshops are extremely helpful to the family members who want to learn about dementia, Tsai says. Attending a workshop alleviates the fear and uncertainty, she says. One of the main concerns for those who receive a dementia diagnosis is the fear of the unknown, Tsai explains.

Taking advantage of the society’s supportive education can help alleviate some of those concerns.

“This is really a time to start thinking, ‘Where can I fi nd as much help as possible?’” Tsai says. “The most important part is don’t

isolate yourself, and that goes for both (the caregiver and patient).”

The Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. was started in 1981 when a group of caregivers came together to discuss the challenges of caring for a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It is an invaluable resource for those living a disease that can have varying impacts on different people and doesn’t just strike the elderly.

Five tips for healthy living

888

Burnaby resident Jennifer Gilchrist, a personal trainer and the leisure services and volunteer coordinator at

Adanac Park Lodge, a seniors’ home, offers readers her top-fi ve tips for keeping fi t both physically and mentally.

Join a gentle aquafi t program at a recreation centre – it will increase physical strength and fl exibility, which will reduce the risk of falls, Gilchrist says.

Falls are a signifi cant concern for seniors, the fi tness expert warns. She suggests starting with a gentle class at fi rst and then advancing to a more diffi cult one when you feel ready.

“It’s a good place to begin because the water has a buoyancy effect,” Gilchrist says.

Get outside, the fi tness expert says. Her prescription is to join a walking club, enjoy the fresh air and connect with nature; doing so will increase endorphins and stave off depression, Gilchrist says.

“Walking is a weight-bearing exercise, so it will increase bone-density,” she adds.

Purchase TheraBands, which are resistance bands, or light weights to perform daily exercises in the home to improve and maintain balance, strength and range-of-motion. If you are unsure how to use the

weights or the bands, Gilchrist suggests hiring a personal trainer to come into your home, or, for a less costly option, joining a community recreation centre with weight-training classes.

This is “huge” for seniors, Gilchrist says. It helps keep you emotionally healthy and is rewarding. Good for the soul is good for the body.

Staying mentally active by reading, doing puzzles and engaging socially helps ward off dementia and disease and should be part of everyone’s healthy-living plan, notes Gilchrist. ■
