This years winners of the City of BurnabyChristmas card contest are a pair right out ofa great kids book.

First, theres the names: Flora Su andFloria Gu.

Wouldnt it be funny if they knew eachother?, you say.

Well, in fact, they do.Theyre best friends, and theyre both in

Olwen Cowans Grade 4/5 class at CapitolHill Elementary.

But thats not where they met.We met in tap and realized our names

were really similar, says Floria.Whenever the teacher said to do buddies,

we always did it together, says Flora.Since they attended different elementary

school at the time, the end of tap classesthreatened to cut short their friendship, butthey soon found they had more in commonthan dance and their similar-sounding names.

Theyre both gifted learners, and theywere reunited this year in the Burnaby schooldistricts multi-age cluster class (MACC) pilotat Capitol Hill.

We just ended up in the same class andsaw that we knew each other, Floria says.

When the pair first found out about thecitys Christmas card contest, they wanted towork on it together, but they were told it wasan individual project, so they cheered eachother on instead.

This is the second year Burnaby city coun-cil has given Grade 5 students in the city achance to get a work of art featured on thegreeting cards mayor and council send outduring the holiday season.

The only criteria is that the design has tofeature the word Burnaby and representthe festive season in the city.

I always thought Christmas was reallyfun and happy, so then I looked around myhouse and saw all the different decorations, says Flora, describing the inspiration for herdrawing.

I was just thinking about what Christmaswas, says Floria.

The two winners were honoured duringa council meeting at city hall Dec. 8 and pre-sented with T-shirts featuring their designs,25 Christmas cards each, a City of Burnabymug and other swag.

Floria described the event as a glorioustime, and meeting the mayor was a high-light for both girls.

I thought he was pretty nice and funny,Flora said.

City officials and former city politicianswill continue to receive free tee times andrecreation passes in 2015.

On Wednesday, the Parks, Recreationand Culture Commission approved its listof recipients for its complimentary passes, which grants city officials free access tocity-owned facilities such as recreation cen-tres, swimming pools and golf courses. Thepasses are issued to current and formercouncillors, commissioners, school trustees, library board members and freemen of thecity.

Earlier this year, the NOW published abreakdown of 2013s pass spending: Useof the passes amounted to $47,275.78, themajority of which ($41,904.59) was for golfat the Riverway and Burnaby Mountaincourses. The program has a yearly limit of$50,000.

The top spenders included parks com-missioner Wayne Peppard ($7,898.24), for-mer commissioner Jim Kozak ($6,354.51),Mayor Derek Corrigan ($5,717.65), Coun.Colleen Jordan ($4,674.20) and then-schooltrustee James Wang ($3,518.10). Current

councillors and commissioners are permit-ted an unrestricted number of guests whileother recipients are allowed one guesteach.

Before approving the list, Coun. PietroCalendino stressed that not all recipientsmake use of their passes, and that thepasses are meant to acknowledge the workof current and former city officials.

I think it needs to be said that eventhough we do provide the passes to pastcommissioners, councillors, etc., that notall of them take advantage of the pass, hetold the commission. Its just a courtesywe give them as recognition that they haveserved in our community.

Coun. Sav Dhaliwal, who chairs theparks commission, agreed, noting the com-plimentary passes have been in place forthree decades.

Most of the names on the 2015 list arerepeats from last year, but there are a fewadditions. Newly elected school trusteeKatrina Chen was added to the list, as wasnow former councillor Richard Chang.

Additionally, some names have beenremoved, including late councillor DougEvans.

At long last, the BigBend area has finallyreceived some much-need-ed bus service, thanks toadvocacy by the BurnabyBoard of Trade and AlphaTechnologies.

In January, the BBOTpaired with the powersolutions company to co-host a transit forum, invit-ing Burnaby businessesto express their concernsand ideas with TransLink. Those comments and thehigh demand for transitprompted city council toapprove a service increasein South Burnaby inSeptember.

As the voice of busi-ness in Burnaby, the BBOT

has a mandate to advocateon issues that are impor-tant to our membershipand the entire businesscommunity, stated BBOTpresident and CEO PaulHolden Monday. Wereparticularly pleased withthis initiative because of itsdirect positive impact forcompanies in the Big Bendneighbourhood and theirmore than 2,500 employ-ees.

To accommodatethe increased service,TransLinks route 116 busnow travels along NorthFraser Way, east of ByrneRoad, to Marine Way. With10 new stops on the route, the 116 bus drops off and

picks up passengers withinwalking distance of mostbusinesses in the Big Bendarea.

TransLink wants tofind ways to better connectpeople, ease congestionand provide convenienttravel choices across theregion, said Tim Savoie,TransLinks vice-presidentof transportation strategy. We heard from customersin this area, and by work-ing with business organi-zations like the BurnabyBoard of Trade, we wereable to better understandthe needs of the commu-nity and identify this solu-tion.

Chocolate might bea year-round treat, but theres some-thing about Christmasthat makes it sweeter.

Local chocolatiersseem to put a little some-thing extra into theirdesserts for the holidays, making for one-of-a-kindconfections that everyonewill make room for, nomatter how much turkeytheyve eaten.

For ChristopheBonzon, owner of ChezChristophe ChocolateriePatisserie in BurnabyHeights, its only naturalto have seasonal offer-ings. The exquisite choco-late shop has a handful ofChristmas-specific delica-cies, which have been inthe making for some time.

We start doing somedesign and research inOctober for December,he said. We try differ-ent designs, differentshapes its a lot of workto get it right. We reallydo something custom forpeople who want a differ-ent gift instead of gettinga box of chocolate.

This year, Bonzon cre-ated edible showpieces of

a snowman, a reindeer, aChristmas tree and a bro-ken ornament. Its some-thing hes done for otherholidays as well, such asEaster and Halloween.

We import ourchocolate directly fromSwitzerland, he said.We are the only one inCanada having this brandof chocolate, so its kindof unique. We createeverything from scratch.

We do cakes, pastries, croissants, and as well,we have a quite wideassortment of chocolate.

But Bonzon isntstrictly a chocolatier hes worked at variousbakeries and pastry shopsfor the last 16 years, andhes prepared not one,but three types of post-Christmas dinner des-serts.

Its our yule log ourbche de Nol andwe have one with threelayers of different choco-lates, he said. We haveanother one, which iscalled a montblanc itsa chestnut mousse withchestnuts, and a spongesoaked in Vanier syrup.

The last type isgingerbread and a cin-namon mousse with aspicy apple jelly on thegingerbread sponge. Itsa real traditional des-sert in Switzerland andits a great dessert forChristmas.

The yule logs serve sixto seven people and are

available for pre-ordersto be picked up on Dec.23 and 24, though theymay have a few extra fordrop-ins.

Spreading someChristmas cheer throughchocolate is one of theperks of the job, and to

    Im dreaming of awhite (chocolate)

Tis the season: Christophe Bonzon, owner of Chez Christophe ChocolateriePatisserie, has prepared several mouth-watering delicacies for the Christmas season.

The Burnaby NOW is a Canadian-owned community newspaper publishedand distributed in the city of Burnaby every Wednesday and Friday

Im learning about Christmas thisyear from an expert. Shes tiny andblonde and has big blue eyes that arealways wide open, taking in the magicof the world around her and a cutelittle mouth that cant stop flapping withthe excitement of sharing that world inwords.

Shes not quite two-and-a-half yearsold, but shes gotthis Christmasthing nailed.

When it comesto Christmas spir-it, my daughterhas a whole bunchof lessons forthose of us whoare older and sup-

posedly wiser than her.Shes not racing frantically around try-

ing to make Christmas magical. Because, you see, shes already figured out thesimple truth: Christmas just is magical, and all we have to do is let it happen.

She couldnt care less whether thehouse is clean, whether the baking isdone, whether there are just-right pres-ents wrapped just-so under the just-delightful tree. (Which is good, because ifyou know anything about me youll knowthat she sure as heck didnt get MarthaStewart for a mother.) Shes not worryingabout buying the perfect outfit to wear tothe umpteenth holiday party or throwingthe perfect shindig to impress co-workersand friends. Shes not bothered what any-one else thinks of her state of readinessfor the holidays or lack thereof.

Shes just taking in the world withwide-eyed wonder.

Look, Mommy, Christmas!I cant tell you how many times Ive

heard that refrain over the past fewweeks. Sometimes its in response tosomething big, like the giant Christmastree at Herbert Spencer School in NewWest. More often, though, its in responseto something relatively small. The snow-men decorations sitting on the shelf atthe coffee shop. The dancing Santa by thedoor at daycare. The string of colouredlights on the neighbours eaves that shecan see from her bedroom window. TheJolly Js (thats candy canes, for thoseuninitiated in Charlottespeak) that adorna house up the street. The fir trees stand-ing in a row at Home Depot. Even, onone occasion, a small piece of discardedwrapping paper on the sidewalk.

And dont forget the music. Shespicked up on a couple of Christmas carols ask her to sing Jingle Bells or Rudolphthe Red-Nosed Reindeer, and shell give ita good shot. Shes not much concerned

whether shes in tune, whether she hasthe words right or whether youre enjoy-ing what shes singing. Shes just beltingit out because, well, its the thing to do,and she likes it, and singing is how youexpress joy. That, and dancing put on atune, and shell spin her little heart out inresponse.

Each tiny moment in her world isgreeted with the kind of enthusiasmmost of us reserve for the so-called bigthings in life. She has no idea what shessupposed to do for the holidays shesjust experiencing everything around herwith the same zest she brings to life year-round.

She expects nothing. And, as a conse-quence, she enjoys everything.

Sure, weve given her some Christmasexperiences. Weve gone for a little nightlights display tour (which is to say, we

walked a few of our favourite blocks inour neighbourhood, where many of thehomeowners decorate for the holidays). We went to the Santa Claus Parade inNew Westminster and checked out thefun at River Market and the Anvil Centre. And, most memorably of all for my wide-eyed child, we rode the Christmas trainat Stanley Park and took in the BrightNights experience.

Every single one of those things hasbeen worth it for the wonder in her eyesand the joy in her babble afterwards asshe recounts her experiences to Mommyand Daddy.

But you know what she talks aboutmost? Not seeing the parade so much asthe fact that she went downtown withher little BFF. And the Christmas train?Yeah, that was great. But what was morefun was going to see her auntie and

uncle afterwards and play with her big-girl friend.

It hasnt occurred to her to think aboutstuff.

Shes received a couple of Christmaspresents so far, and shes happily latchedon to one of them a little stuffed rein-deer. She loves it with the same doggeddevotion she gives to a rather eclecticassortment of treasured possessions, including a little pink plastic ring thatonce adorned a birthday cupcake, and theLittle People family known in our houseas Plastic Mommy, Plastic Daddyand Plastic Charlotte.

But she doesnt have any clue thatChristmas is meant to involve filling yourhouse with fancy presents wrapped infancy paper.

Shes not going to get a lot from her

parents for Christmas(although, undoubtedly, her rather doting grand-parents will make up forit).

But she wont feel thelack of anything.

She has no inklingof the desire for bigger.Better. Brighter. Shinier.More.

She just loves her toysand her home and herroom and her family andher friends and her life with a fierceness thatall of us should strive toemulate.

    So if the holidays

are stressing you out, heres my advice: enjoyChristmas like a two-year-old: with wide eyes and asense of wonder.

Spend time with peopleyou care about. Walkaround your neighbour-hood and look at thelights. Curl up with abook in your living roomand admire your ownChristmas tree especiallyif its not quite stand-ing straight and if itsdecorated with an eclecticassortment of not-pretty-but-special-to-your-familydecorations.

    Above all, take time out

of whatever it is youredoing to just enjoy it.Forget the house. Forgetthe shopping. Forget thepresents. Forget the hul-labaloo.

Just sing. And dance. And enjoy. And be.

Just for a little while, let yourself experience theworld like a two-year-old.Trust me, its a lot morefun than trying to be thisseasons answer to MarthaStewart.

Christmas: Take the time to just be

Thank you for making theChristmas season brighterDear Editor:

The Christmas spirit means manythings to different people. It can be assimple as volunteering to help a familywith low income chose the perfect gift fortheir child, or as meaningful as reachingout to an isolated senior to let them knowthey are not alone. For parents strugglingto balance multiple part-time jobs, rent,before- and after-school care, and payingall the other bills, it can be one less thing toworry about and a reason to celebrate.

For new Canadians, it can be a warmwelcome to a strange land when you aretrying to start over.

Or, it can be the anticipation of a childon Christmas Eve, hoping that Rudolf canfind her home; and the magic of the morn-ing when only crumbles and carrot topsremain from what was left out for Santaand his reindeer.

For all of us the Christmas spirit can beabout more than what we have and want.It can be about what we can do for eachother, what is possible when we worktogether. It is the one time of year whenwe imagine a world without child poverty, when we want break down barriers forpeople in need, and when we feel a deeper

sense of community that surrounds uswith carols, lights, and a common purposeto do good.

This sense of sharing is what makesthe Burnaby Christmas Bureau so special.Thousands of donors, volunteers, localbusinesses, employees, unions and insti-tutions give to help those in need. Thecommunity comes together to make sureChristmas is a magical time of year.

We are so grateful to all those whosupport the program by donating gifts forchildren and parents, books and sportsequipment, and hampers full of holidaycheer. Thank you to the army of volunteersthat spend hours picking up toys through-out the city, sorting, and elfing in the toyroom. Also to all those groups that sponsorfamilies and seniors, or host Angel Projectscollecting gifts for children.

I would also like to express by sincereappreciation to Jennifer Moreau and all thestaff at the Burnaby NOW.

The articles throughout the season andads provided help to spread the Christmasspirit. They tell the stories of how and whypeople give, the impact of their generosityand how each of us can make our com-munity better.

Merry Christmas to everyone and bestwishes in the New Year.

Bonzon, its a dream cometrue to live and work inNorth Burnaby.

When we lookedwhere to open our place, downtown is really expen-sive, he recalled. A lotof our customers are fromBurnaby, Port Moody,Coquitlam, so they donthave to drive downtown toget more premier product.

For us, we think wemade the right choice bydoing that and the peopleare happy that we arehere. This neighbourhood, theres a lot of nice places the Peartree, Cioffis andslowly, we are becoming adestination.

Chez Christophe isntthe only destination forsweet, chocolate treats inthe city.

Charlie Sigvardsen hasbeen running CharliesChocolate Factory onCanada Way off BoundaryRoad for almost 43 years. The name of the store, obviously, is a take on the1964 Roald Dahl childrensbook but it didnt start

    out that way.When we started,

we opened the store inGastown, and right acrossthe street was the OldSpaghetti Factory, he said.We were going to callours the Chocolate Factory, and the governmentwouldnt register it. Theysaid that was too commona name.

Somebody I was work-ing with said, My boys arereading a book at schoolabout Charlie and theChocolate Factory. Yournames Charlie why notcall it Charlies ChocolateFactory?

Sigvardsen essen-tially found his goldenticket, having run his ownchocolate shop for morethan four decades. Heuses imported Callebautchocolate from Belgium because Europeansknow how to make goodchocolate but hes alsoknown for molding choco-late into all kinds of shapesand designs.

He has chocolate soc-cer balls, iPhones, even aViagra-shaped chocolate.

Hes even made a 193-pound chocolate heart forthe Variety Club.

That type of ingenuitycomes out at Christmas, with chocolate snowmen, wreaths, Christmas lightsand candy canes all overthe store. New to theirChristmas lineup this yearis a chocolate reindeer, made with a chocolate-dipped marshmallow andchocolate-covered pretzels.

Ellen, our granddaugh-ter, she developed that thisyear, said Sigvardsen. Its been very popular.

And keeping with thestores own tradition, theyrecently had their annualgiveaway of a chocolateSanta, worth $195.

At 84, Sigvardsen is cer-tainly old enough to retire, but it seems he doesntwant to. Hes a kid at heartin a candy store whywould he want to leave?

I explain to the chil-dren that come in that Ifeel Im the lucky Charliewho ended up with thechocolate factory, he said.I do it now to have funat it.

Chocolate: Charlies is another option for sweetscontinued from page 5

Classic: Charlie Sigvardsen has owned Charlies Chocolate Factory on CanadaWay just off Boundary Road for nearly 43 years.

Deer Lake Parks coastal bobcat hasbeen sighted again, and its venturing intomore urban areas.

Alicia Brady-Deaust said her parentsneighbour saw the predatory creature inthe northwest part of the woods, just southof Deer Lake Parkway. It was approachingthe surrounding neighbourhood, follow-ing a gravel path before heading back intothe forest.

They were home and they got a phonecall from the neighbours saying, Be carefulif youre going outside because weve justseen a cougar or something, she said.

I grew up at that house and Ive seencoyotes, but not even on our street. Youllhear them in the woods, or if youre walk-ing in Deer Lake you may catch sight ofone, but this was quite bold, being outwhere it was.

Brady-Deaust said shes seen signs inthe area warning of the bobcat in the park, but never expected it to go near peopleshomes. She said she fears development iscausing habitat fragmentation, in whichenvironmental areas are cut down to makeroom for roads and buildings.

It just occurs to me that weve neverseen these types of things before cer-tainly you wouldnt expect to see this kindof thing in Burnaby, she said. Ive seensome not-so-good-looking coyotes in thelast while in and around Burnaby, and allof that just kind of made me think this ispart of a bigger issue.

But conservation officer Jack Trudgiansaid the bobcat may stray outside of theforest while preying on other animals.

It could be chasing rabbits, skunks, raccoons, he said, noting that bobcats arenocturnal and typically hunt at night orearly in the morning. They may get cutoff in urban areas, but this one seems toalways find its way back to Deer Lake.

The bobcat is believed to be the onlyone in the Deer Lake area, according toTrudgian. He said it may have come fromup on BurnabyMountain and settled down

in the forested area a few years ago.Theres lots of food sources for him

there, so thats probably why he keepssticking around. Hes got the place tohimself.

Trudgian said he regularly receivescalls about the bobcat, but noted its not athreat to the public.

Were not saying it couldnt be dan-gerous, but really, bobcats are way in thelower end of any type of public threat, hesaid. Just leave it alone and let it move itsway on wherever its going.

Nonetheless, Brady-Deaust said shellbe a bit more cautious the next time shevisits her parents.

I stopped there yesterday and get-ting out of the car in their driveway wasa different experience, she said. I waslooking around to make sure of my sur-roundings.

Christmas dinner at home is greatand all, but cooking that 25-poundturkey is a lot of work, not to men-tion all the sides that go with it.

So how about going out somewhereover the holidays and let someone elsecook? We asked a few Burnaby residentswhere they like to go to eat, drink and bemerry over the Christmas season. Hereswhat they had to say!

Todd PolichLocal mural artist Todd Polich had a

few places to recommend for good eats, namely the Mountain Shadow Pub inNorth Burnaby.

Its a nicewarm environ-ment in thisreally rustic, oldhouse its justgot this greatfeel to it andI think its areally creativeenvironment,he said. They

have a good flatbread pizza at MountainShadow.

From the bar, Polich said he usuallygoes for a tonic and lime, but over thewinter, he likes to warm up with somespiced rum and ginger ale.

Likewise, he said the Great Bear Pubon Kingsway has some good food selec-tions and has a nice quiet atmosphere forsome of his mural meetings.

Theyve got this really cool back roomthats a little bit isolated you can havegood conversations there. Its got a nicevibe.

Coun. Anne KangBurnaby Coun. Anne Kang had some

ideas for the young ones, picking out theBurnaby Village Museum as a great placeto be merry.

Theres good sightseeing, great funfor the kids, she said. We saw the lightsand did the scavenger hunt and we hadice cream, even though it was very cold.

While her kids are partial to the old-fashioned ice cream My kids go for thestrawberry, so I dont really focus on theother flavours, she said with a laugh.

She said its her familys tradition toget chicken strips and fries at the village.

But ultimately, she said she takes herkids there for the heartwarming bondingexperience.

There are artists either telling storiesor singing theres lots for families todo, she said.

Steve KozakBurnaby blues man Steve Kozak, who

lives in Metrotown, said he frequents theEarls on Kingsway near Willingdon for agood meal or some drinks.

Its a good place for happy hour, hesaid with a chuckle. Its within walkingdistance and we enjoy going over there.

We go to the Keg once in a while, too, down at the bottom of Willingdon. That

seems to be a good spot. As you can tell, Ilike a good steak.

Kozak added that there arent toomany venues in Burnaby to perform andsee live music, but hed love for more topop up.

Mark TsemakAside from his own healthy prod-

ucts, Mark Tsemak, the owner of SouthBurnabys Red Square Bakery admits hesmore of a homemade kind of guy.

Im the guy that cooks at home, hesaid. I go grocery shopping, I see a meal

already in front of me, and I buy theingredients and cook at home.

But he noted he likes some goodJapanese food, like the cuisine of BlackDragon Sushi, which has gone above andbeyond to serve healthy meals.

I gave the manager, Kevin, the recipeto do cauliflower instead of rice, andhe did such a fantastic job, he said.Diabetics can eat that, and they cannoteat rice.

Some people listen to consumers andwant to please them.
