Richard Lee does it againBlocks NDP sweep of every Burnaby seat at all levelsWanda [email protected]

You can call him an island in the ocean.

A bastion. Even the BC

Liberals’ own Berlin Wall surrounded by New Democrat territory.

On Tuesday night, Richard Lee was also a winner, for the fourth time, of the Burnaby North riding.

As local politicians go, Lee said with a laugh Wednesday “it’s a little bit lonely.”

His win over the NDP’s Janet Routledge, and the Liberals’ loss of Burnaby-Lougheed now makes him the only Liberal politician in Burnaby at the civic, provincial or federal levels.

He seems to be the only person standing between the NDP and a complete sweep of all seats in the city.

“More diversity would be healthier,” Lee said of Burnaby’s political makeup.

“I will try to be a bridge between [non-NDP] people and those ideas at the other levels of government in Burnaby.”

In a shocker of an election result, the BC Liberals defied the pollsters and won a majority government Tuesday.

That’s despite the New Democrats gaining an additional seat in Burnaby, bringing its total to three out of four.

In Burnaby-North, Liberal incumbent Richard Lee was the only candidate from his party to prevent an all-out NDP sweep of

the city. By defeating the NDP’s Janet Routledge by 833 votes, Lee maintained the riding as a Liberal bastion. It was Lee’s fourth consecutive election victory dating back to 2001 when the NDP were swept from power.

Over in Burnaby-Lougheed, the NDP’s Jane Shin won her seat by 523 votes over Liberal challenger Ken Kramer.

The victory in the riding vacated by the retiring Liberal Harry Bloy came despite repeated questions raised by the Liberals over Shin’s medical and academic qualifications.

The two NDP incumbents in Burnaby held onto their seats handily.

Raj Chouhan won his Burnaby-Edmonds riding by 1,883 votes over Liberal Jeff Kuah.

In Burnaby-Deer Lake, Kathy Corrigan was again the victor, this time by about 700 votes over Liberal Shian Gu.

The Green Party of BC didn’t come close, although they could have played spoilers in Burnaby North with Carrie McLaren taking 6.86 per cent of the vote in a race in

which Routledge lost by only four per cent.

The Greens’ Darwin Burns (Burnaby-Lougheed), Rick McGowan (Burnaby-Deer Lake) and Wyatt Tessari (Burnaby-Edmonds) all won roughly eight per cent of the vote in their ridings.

The two BC Conservative candidates were also

non-factors with Christine Clarke winning 8.2 per cent of the vote in Burnaby-Lougheed and Wayne Marklund (Burnaby North) just 522 votes, or 2.64 per cent.

A sign negative campaigns work?Wanda [email protected]

Burnaby-Deer Lake’s incumbent New Democrat MLA Kathy Corrigan won her riding but the focus now will be on the BC Liberals’ come-from-behind win despite Premier Christy Clark losing her own Vancouver-Point Grey seat.

“It was pretty stunning actually, to see that result, but I guess the people of B.C. spoke,” said Corrigan, who defeated Liberal Shian Gu by about 700 votes.

“The really ugly American-style of negative campaign devoid of facts, it works apparently.”

The NDP will take a look at the campaign “and analyze it probably to death,” she said.

“I think it was clear that the negative ads left a real impression in the minds of voters, and I was even hearing that on the doorstep.

Unfair as it was, it did have an impact so I think that made a difference across the province.”

As for whether the NDP will have to follow that model, Corrigan stressed that there’s a distinct difference between being personally negative against the candidates and pointing out their record in office.

“Maybe we didn’t do that well enough, pointing out the negative record of the Liberals,” she said.

“Maybe the people of B.C. over the next while will take a look at it and say, ‘wow, we just re-elected a government that has done this, this, this and this. And we didn’t like them for that a couple of months ago but somehow that was lost in the campaign.’”

In Burnaby-Edmonds, perhaps the NDP’s safest seat in the city, BC Liberal candidate Jeff Kuah paid a visit to incumbent Raj Chouhan’s campaign office to offer his congratulations.

Chouhan won by 1,883 votes. But on Tuesday night, Kuah

was gracious in defeat.“Anything is possible but I

think Mr. Chouhan has a good team and I try my best and we’ll see come May 27 how’s the final result and I truly congratulate Mr. Chouhan,” he said by phone.

Chouhan said he was happy

with his win but disappointed with the overall result.

“I’m pleased people in Burnaby-Edmonds, they put their trust in me and I’m looking forward to representing them in Victoria with their issues, be it seniors issues, children or

housing, whatever that issue may be.”

He said he was pleased with NDP leader Adrian Dix’s positive campaign, saying he “stuck with issues like child poverty, lack of housing, skills training, seniors… The NDP and the caucus, we will be very strong and make sure the government is accountable on all those fronts.”

Chouhan said Kuah ran a positive campaign that focused on the issues, but that was not the case with the Liberal party as a whole.

“Obviously it had an impact on some people but in my view that’s not the way to do it. We need to bring people back to the whole process in a positive way rather than scaring them away from this democratic process,” he said.

“In my view, the negative attack ads, the negative campaigning is not the answer.”

Premier says TV debate a ‘turning point’Jeff nagelBlack press

Kinder Morgan’s proposed twinning of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline through the Lower Mainland looks more likely with the B.C. Liberals staying in power than if the NDP had won Tuesday’s election.

NDP leader Adrian Dix had vowed to block a big increase in oil tanker exports from Metro Vancouver.

His reversal of a previous

pledge to wait for a formal project application became a major campaign issue.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Premier Christy Clark said she believed the TV debate was the

turning point of the campaign for the Liberal rebound and that the NDP’s Kinder Morgan position was a factor.

Clark said voters weren’t impressed by “the idea that you’re going to say ‘No’ to economic development before you even see it.”

She stressed the province will put any Kinder Morgan proposal to the same requirements as the planned Enbridge Northern Gateway

pipeline to Kitimat, including world-leading safeguards against ocean and land spills as well as a substantial share of benefits for B.C.’s risk.

“The five conditions aren’t going to change,” Clark said.

“Any expansion of heavy oil is going to have to meet those five conditions.”

The Trans Mountain pipeline from northern Alberta to Burnaby has operated for more than 50 years but Kinder Morgan wants to nearly triple its flow to 890,000 barrels per day, resulting in many more oil tankers plying Vancouver harbour.

Polling results ‘misled the public’Wanda [email protected]

Watching the election results come in Tuesday night, Burnaby-Douglas MP Kennedy Stewart was less than impressed with the work of pollsters in the lead-up to voting day.

Despite polling results that showed the NDP constantly leading, the BC Liberals managed an upset victory, winning 50 seats to the NDP’s 33.

“If the result stays the way it is, it’s been a disaster for the pollsters. Angus Reid predicted a plus-nine-per-cent margin of support for the NDP and Ipsos Reid had a plus-six, it looks like it was not even close,” said Stewart, a political science professor at Simon Fraser University before he was elected in 2011.

“The pollsters are really going

to have to look at what they’ve done here and really it looks like it’s misled the public quite significantly.”

He was speaking to a reporter at the campaign office of fellow NDPer and Burnaby North candidate Janet Routlege, who ended up losing to BC Liberal rival Richard Lee.

Stewart noted the pollsters also got it wrong in last year’s Alberta provincial election, when Conservative Premier Alison Redford also managed a come-from-behind win that went against the polling results.

“Two in a row, Alberta and B.C. … It’s such a mainstay of reporting that they’re going to have to go back to the drawing board to look at what they’re doing because again, it’s misrepresenting

what’s happening on the ground. I look forward to their explanations as to why the results were so far off.”

As a political scientist, he added, “I’ve always looked at polling, because it’s usually pretty good and it does tell you when you read into it what happened.

“But we’re all going to have to go back and re-examine what we think of these types of races and how we evaluate what happens because we’re not getting much information through the resources that we usually depend upon.”

But on Tuesday night, with about a dozen campaign workers on hand at his hard-to-find, second-floor office on Lougheed Highway, Lee was being cautious, having become used to close results in his previous four campaigns, including a loss in 1996.

Apart from 2001, when the NDP were wiped out at the polls across the province, the difference between the winner and the runner-up in the riding has ranged from 65 to 766 votes.

“It’s still very close, a few hundred votes could change very quickly,” Lee said Tuesday night a little over an hour after the polls closed.

He said he wouldn’t be surprised if he won by only 200 votes.

In general, Lee said he received a “warm reception” on the doorsteps, and while people might not agree with his point of view, there was always discussion about policies and issues.

“Every election I always feel a little bit behind so I catch up and work a little bit harder,” he said. Despite his years of experience, “It doesn’t get easier, it’s hard work, [door-knocking] every day four to five hours usually for the whole month.”

In the end it paid off, with Lee taking Burnaby North by an 833-vote margin over Routledge.

He believes he rode the wave of support that ultimately kept

the Liberals in power with its campaign focus on economic development and fiscal management.

By early Wednesday afternoon, he was finally breathing easy. “I think it’s OK

now,” he said with some understatement.

On Tuesday night, Routledge was still not conceding defeat as she awaited all the numbers to come in from the polls. But by Wednesday morning, her defeat had

started to sink in.“We were surprised, we’re still

surprised but it’ll take a couple of days to reflect on it and figure out what happened and why it happened,” she said. “We were very hopeful for quite a long time in the evening.”

Routledge hadn’t yet thought about what is next for her, after spending two years campaigning in the riding following months of petitioning against the harmonized sales tax.

She couldn’t comment on whether she might entertain further forays into politics. “I wouldn’t rule out anything.”

Any analysis of the result will likely consider the impact of the two other parties. The BC Conservatives’ Wayne Marklund receiving only 522 votes, or 2.64 per cent, not enough to put a dent in the Liberals’ support. Meanwhile, the BC Green Party’s Carrie McLaren earned 6.86 per cent of the vote, which could have siphoned support away from Routledge, who only lost by four per cent.

But McLaren denied that was a factor.

“The whole vote-splitting thing, we would probably have got, if anything, disaffected Liberals, I think,” said McLaren, who was thrilled that Green candidate Andrew Weaver (Oak Bay-Gordon Head) made history by being the party’s first elected MLA in B.C.

What the hell happened? That’s been the question

that’s been wagging jaws since the moment it was clear the BC Liberals had won the election Tuesday night.

Defying polls and pundits, the big question was how could all the predictions have been so wrong.

Some say Christy Clark successfully became the first female to be elected premier in B.C. because she had a simple message and repeatedly hammered it on every tour stop she made in the province: Strong economy, secure tomorrow.

Dix’s message was more nuanced: Change for better, one practical step at a time.

It left room for people to ask, change to what?

Perhaps the economy—and the looming fear that the horrible fiscal mess afflicting other countries could soon land here—is what drove many folks to plug their noses and vote for the devil they know.

Lord knows the BC Liberals and Christy Clark’s leadership

left much to be desired. In press releases, the BC

Liberal media machine kept a running tally of what they said Dix’s promises would cost. The message was clear, taking a page from the Social Credit W.A.C. Bennett days in B.C.: Beware the red under the bed.

Some say this election proved positive campaigning doesn’t work. That Dix should have worked harder to point out the failings of the BC Liberal government, kept things like BC Rail, and cost overruns for BC Place and the Vancouver Trade and Exhibition Centre fresh in people’s minds.

If there was an absence of dirt shoveled by the NDP campaign, there was also an absence of gold voters could hold onto.

Skills training? A healthy, diversified economy? If Christy Clark’s populist

style and megawatt smile evoked memories of Bill Vander Zalm and inspired the wariness reserved for door-to-door salesmen, Adrian Dix’s deadpan delivery left many cold.

Dix’s decision, mid-campaign, to state clear opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion plan may be seen as a pivotal blunder.

The Liberals seized on this as a sign the NDP would stifle industry (read: jobs and revenues) in B.C.

It may be untrue, but as every political dog knows, messages like that stick to your fur.

Meantime, though it was a staggering loss for the NDP provincially, the party’s fortunes improved a little in Burnaby with the theft of Burnaby-Lougheed from the Liberals.

Beleagured MLA Harry Bloy had called it a day, and the Liberals ran a new face in Ken Kramer.

Despite the damage their

missteps did to their party, it’s surprising people like Bloy continue to be involved in campaigns.

He was at Kramer’s election night event, apparently telling a local news reporter she was “not welcome.”

So too with Burnaby’s Brian Bonney, who was involved in the Liberals ethnic outreach scandal, and was back volunteering this month with the Burnaby-Lougheed campaign.

Remember that ethnic outreach scandal?

I, for one, was convinced that was the final nail in the BC Liberals’ fortunes.

Still in Lougheed, concerning at this point is the absence of Jane Shin, the NDP’s victor.

After she got flack during the campaign for irregularities in her resume—can she practise medicine or not?—and an unfortunate comment she made on a blog more than a decade ago, she all but disappeared.

Even Tuesday night, she was invisible.

The fall and rise of the BC Liberals

Imagine a childhood without Tony the Tiger or Toucan Sam, no Ronald MacDonald, or Hamburglar, or Mayor McCheese.

According to a medical coalition, Canadian children 13 and younger shouldn’t be exposed to marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages.

Its aim is to reduce the increasing number of overweight children.

The Canadian Medical Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hypertension Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada and others are calling on food companies to immediately stop marketing foods high in fats, added sugars or sodium to children.

The groups say the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 1989 that advertisers should not be able to capitalize upon children’s credulity and that advertising directed at young children is manipulative.

However, food companies in Canada, except in Quebec, are not required by law to restrict unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children. So they spend billions of dollars marketing to kids because they know it works. And 75 per cent of children today are overweight.

If a ban was enacted, restrictions would apply to TV, internet, radio, magazines, mobile phones, and video games, as well as product placement, cross-promotions, school or event sponsorships, and viral marketing.

The proposed advertising restriction includes characters or mascots promoting sugary cereals.

You could require more warning labels, or add a tax on such products, too, but doing the latter hasn’t stopped people from smoking or drinking.

In the end, parents have to stop buying their kids so much junk food, turn off the TV, take away the iPads, and make them go outside.

COMMENT

I’ve just returned from voting in what I feel is the biggest sham election yet foisted upon us, especially in my riding of Burnaby-Lougheed.

I no longer have any confidence that our elections at any level have anything to do with democracy and instead are only about perpetuating a corrupt system, thanks to Elections B.C. in this case.

Having no chance to ask questions of the party leaders is bad enough, but now we have virtually no chance to ask questions of the local candidates either.

First we were separated from the Burnaby North riding in 2008 without any public consultation.

Then we were denied our right to personally meet the candidates at an all-candidates meeting.

Meanwhile Burnaby North held four such all-candidates meetings.

Then I noticed that my voting location was relocated to further away from my home.

However I was still allowed to vote in the original location after showing my I.D.

Then I found out that one of the candidates on the ballot had the unfortunate name of Christine Clarke with no party affiliation listed.

When I asked the scrutineer who she was, I was told that she had filed her nomination papers late and so there was no time to list her affiliation.

And without an all candidates meeting, I didn’t know anything about her, nor did the scrutineer.

There were four spaces on the ballot and I wrote four words “No Debate No Vote.” No wonder that voter turnout is always dismal.

Re: Good to know who we’re dealing with (Letters, NewsLeader, May 10)

Mayor Corrigan’s response to Gwyn Morgan’s opinion column was interesting, to say the least.

What happened to traveling the high road in this election?

Because the going got tough things are back to normal? It is even more noticeable that Mr. Corrigan did not use even one word to prove Mr. Morgan wrong.

Election was a great disappointment

Her campaign manager said she was unavailable, as she was spending time with friends and family.

The experience of having her reputation dragged through the media mud during the campaign, for a political newcomer, must have been horrible.

But she belongs to her constituents now. She signed on. She won. Time to brush herself off and get down to work.

And what of the other parties?

Much has been said about the flame-out of the BC Conservatives.

If they hadn’t crashed and burned on the shores of internal acrimony in the recent year, the logic goes, the vote split would have carried the NDP on a wave of victory.

Or if the BC Greens hadn’t run such an effective campaign, ostensibly sucking away

left-leaning votes...If only…Regardless of who you were

cheering for, Tuesday night was a hell of an exciting time to

watch politics in B.C.

Shin takes Burnaby-LougheedDespite Liberal attacks on her academic credentialsWanda [email protected]

While the New Democrats lost the provincial election, it did add a seat to its Burnaby base of support with Dr. Jane Shin’s victory in Burnaby-Lougheed.

The riding was vacated when BC Liberal MLA Harry Bloy was forced to resign after leaking an email to a company under investigation.

However, early in Shin’s campaign she came under attack

by the BC Liberals who questioned inconsistencies in her resume and medical credentials.

Shin has a medical degree and teaches at Vancouver Community College, the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in New Westminster and until last year, B.C. Institute of Technology.

Until recently, her biographical information found online did not list where she completed her medical degree but it now states she graduated in 2007 from the Spartan Health Sciences University

in St. Lucia in the Caribbean.

Shin herself has said she never practised medicine and when she completed her medical training decided to focus on academic medicine instead.

After the Liberal attacks, she kept a low profile for the rest of the campaign, with numerous media outlets noting they could not reach her for interviews.

The vitriol from the Liberal side continued even on election day, when Bloy himself tweeted, “@drjaneshin. Did you come out of hiding to vote??”

Bloy followed that after the results were in with: “This is so disgusting that a FAKE dr who has never lived full time in Burnaby. I know many NDP’s are as disgusted as I am.”

While her campaign team joined their counterparts with Kathy Corrigan’s (Burnaby-Deer Lake) and Raj Chouhan’s

(Burnaby-Edmonds) campaigns for a post-election gathering at Chouhan’s campaign office, Shin herself was nowhere to be seen.

In the end, Shin won by 523 votes and her Liberal opponent, lawyer Ken Kramer, called the campaign, his first, an “amazing experience.”

Kramer said in an interview Wednesday that he entered the race late and had limited time to set up his campaign office and team, but still put in 18-hour days trying to get the Liberal message out.

As for the negative campaign against Shin, which drew the focus away from policies and issues, Kramer said, “I took the high road for a lot of that and I did not do a lot around that element.”

He did say that Shin’s absence became a challenge as she wasn’t available to respond to questions. The riding was the only one in Burnaby that didn’t hold a single all-candidates debate, he noted.

With his loss, Kramer took consolation in his party winning the election overall.

“We overcame all the pundits out there who told us at the beginning of the election that it couldn’t be done, we were going to be wiped out, we would be replacing our leader,” he said.

Kramer will now return to his law practice and community work and admits he’s caught the political bug.

“I’ll be back in four years. In Burnaby they’re going to get to know me really well over the next four years and I’m going to ensure that in 2017 we’re ready to move forward stronger than ever.”

Shin was unavailable for comment before the NewsLeader’s deadline.

Shin’s absence a ‘challenge’

A 22-year-old Burnaby man has been arrested after a domestic violence incident led to a woman being stabbed in the throat Saturday evening.

On May 11 around 9 p.m., Burnaby RCMP were called to a home in the 6900-block of Adair Street.

“A woman had run to her neighbour’s residence bleeding profusely from stab wounds to her neck and head,” said Burnaby RCMP Corp. Dave Reid in a press release.

The woman was injured during an argument with her partner who had fled the scene on foot. The victim was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where she was treated for her wounds.

Coquitlam RCMP later located and arrested the suspect.

Lorne Rose, 22, of Burnaby is charged with attempted murder and breaching bail conditions. He has been remanded in custody.

For the record

A story on The Land Conservancy of B.C. handing management of Eagles Estate and Baldwin House back to the City of Burnaby due to the organizations financial difficulties contained an inaccuracy. Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver is facing foreclosure but, according to a subsequent post on TLC’s website, it was never mortgage free. The Historic Joy Kogawa House Society, which runs programming at the property, never owned the house but rather, TLC took out a mortgage in 2006 to purchase it and save it from demolition.

When you turn on your tap and clean, safe water comes out, do you ever wonder how it got there or what happens to it when it goes down the drain? Or why you should care?

“We may think we have enough water for our needs in BC but that is not always the case. Our water is finite, and the demand is increasing due to climate change, popula-tion growth and industry needs,” says Daisy Fos-ter, CEO of the 4,700-member BC Water & Waste Association. “Although the expenses may not be apparent, there are significant costs, energy and human input required to treat our drink-ing water to be clean and safe, deliver it to our taps, and manage the wastewater that goes down the drain.”

She adds, “New regulations and aging infrastructure such as pipes and treatment systems will mean upgrades and replace-ments and this is something we are all going to have to pay for.”

During Drinking Water Week, May 20 – 26, BC Water & Waste Association asks you to ‘Get

to Know Your H2O’ and think about the impact of your every-day habits.

“We forget that we use the same treated drinking water to

wash our cars and water our lawns. We flush our toilets and away it goes with whatever we put down there,” says Foster. “Just a few simple changes such as water-ing our lawns less, using rain barrels, installing

water efficient fixtures or appli-ances, and not putting harmful substances down our drains can make a big difference.”

For example, detergents, paint, medications, and many other household products end up at wastewater treatment plants where special processes are required to minimize the impact on the environment and receiv-ing waters. Fats, oils and grease that we put down our drains can often cause blockages in sewer lines resulting in costly repairs.

Foster says, “During Drinking Water Week, get involved and learn more about your water and the impact of your actions. Start by taking the Community Water

Challenge and pledge to be water wise.”

The five easy pledges can be taken online. People can also find out about community events such as tours of water and wastewater treatment facil-ities in their area, or download fun and educational activities for children and families, at www.drinkingwaterweek.org.

Our water – Why do we need to protect it? Why should we care?

Be Water Wise:□ I will limit my shower time to 5 minutes per day.

□ I will install a water efficient fixture or appliance in my home.

□ I will use less water outdoors by giving my lawn only the amount of water it needs (2.5 cm of water each week, or the height of a tuna can).

□ I will turn off the tap when brushing my teeth, scrubbing dishes, shaving, or during any other water wasting activity.

□ I will not put harmful substances such as cleaners, paints, pesticides and grease down my drain.

Did You Know? n The average British Columbian uses 353 litres of water per day, yet thinks they use less than 200 litres per day.* n 78 per cent of British Columbians would fix an internet outage within a day, but only 50 per cent would fix a leaky faucet within the same time frame.*n Replacing an 18-litre-per-flush toilet with an ultra low volume 6-litre or less model leads to a 66% savings in water flushed and will reduce indoor water use by about 30%.

Are you water wise? Take the Community Water Challenge and enter to win an exciting water-themed getaway in Vancouver courtesy of The Fairmont Waterfront and Helijet, plus receive 10% off water efficient fixtures at Splashes Bath & Kitchen Centres across BC! It’s simple – just pledge to take one or all of the water wise actions below. Make your pledge at:

In BC we may take our water for granted, but it is a finite resource we need to value and protect.

True and False: Test your water knowledge!

1. British Columbians use more water than other Canadians. T__ F__

2. A toilet that continues to run after flushing can waste up to 200,000 litres of water in a single year. T__ F__

3. The best way to achieve a healthy lawn is by watering lightly several times a week. T__ F__

Answers: 1.True: British Columbians use an average of 353 litres of water per day; the average Canadian uses 274 litres of water per day.* 2. True: To find out if your toilet is leaking, put two or three drops of food colouring in the tank at the back of the toilet, and wait a few minutes. If the colour shows up in the bowl, there’s a leak. 3. False: Watering your lawn thoroughly once per week rather than lightly at a greater frequency will strengthen the roots and promote a greener, healthier lawn.

Burnaby’s drinking water comes from three mountainous watersheds:

The Capilano Reservoir, the Seymour Reservoir and the Coquitlam Reservoir. These reservoirs are protected areas that are operated and managed by Metro Vancouver and closed to public access to prevent human caused contamination. The three large supply lakes collect water from snowmelt, creeks and streams. Metro Vancouver treats and tests the water for quality at the source before it is delivered through thousands of kilometres of pipes and water mains to Lower Mainland municipalities like Burnaby.

Did You Know?■ Burnaby has over 700km of drinking water

distribution lines.■ The City delivers approximately 115 million

litres of water per day to residents and businesses in Burnaby.

■ The City has 63 drinking water sampling locations and tests over 1,200 samples each year.

Tap Into H20 Conservation■ Purchase an indoor and outdoor water

conservation kit from the City. They are available to residents for $10 each (including tax) at Burnaby City Hall, in the Engineering Department.

Retireees, defeated MLAs to share $26m in payoutsJeff NagelBlack Press

A long list of departing MLAs – both Liberals and New Democrats – are now in line for lucrative pensions, whether they retired voluntarily or were defeated at the polls.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates the total payouts to MLAs who didn’t win or seek re-election could top $26 million. The government injects $4 for every dollar politicians contribute, and the resulting pensions are also inflation adjusted.

“The MLA pension payout ATM is spitting out cash at

a rate taxpayers can only dream of,” CTF B.C. director Jordan Bateman said. “A dozen former MLAs will soon join the million-dollar pension club – while most of us are scraping together every nickel we can find for our own retirements.”

Departing NDP MLAs in the Lower Mainland and their estimated payouts to

age 80 include: Surrey-Fleetwood NDP MLA Jagrup Brar ($555,000), Delta North NDP MLA Guy Gentner ($500,000), Coquitlam-Maillardville’s Diane Thorne ($461,000) and Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MLA Michael Sather ($490,000). Several others, including Port Moody-Coquitlam by-election winner Joe Trasolini, get nothing because they have less than the six years of service required to qualify.

Outgoing Liberal MLAs include: Gordon Campbell in Vancouver-Point Grey ($1.7 million), Colin Hansen in Vancouver-Quilchena ($1.54 million), Barry Penner in Chilliwack-Hope ($1.35 million), Kevin Falcon in Surrey-Cloverdale ($1.09 million), Randy Hawes in Abbotsford-Mission ($847,000), Harry Bloy in Burnaby-Lougheed ($720,000), Chilliwack’s John Les ($835,000), Surrey-

Tynehead’s Dave Hayer ($824,000) and Joan McIntyre in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky ($568,000).

Defeated Abbotsford independent John Van Dongen, who served for years as a B.C. Liberal, exits with a pension valued at $1.48 million. First-year payouts range from $30,000 to $98,000 in Campbell’s case.

Exiting MLAs also get up to 15 months of severance at the $101,859 MLA annual salary and includes a top-up if the politician takes a job at less than six figures. They’re also eligible for up to $9,000 in “training” funds.

Bateman noted the B.C. Liberals ran against “gold-plated” pensions in 1996 and then NDP premier Glen Clark brought in a fairer, dollar-for-dollar system. But Liberals in 2007 brought back ultra-generous pensions and let MLAs buy back missing years of service.

‘Gold-plated’ pensions a balm for election losers

Clark in no rush to seek seatTom FletcherBlack Press

Premier Christy Clark said she will wait until election results are finalized and she has met with her 49 MLAs before deciding where to seek a seat to replace the one she lost Tuesday.

NDP challenger David Eby defeated Clark by more than 700 votes in Vancouver-Point Grey, knocking on doors while Clark traveled the province on the leader’s tour.

At a news conference Wednesday, Clark shrugged off the loss, saying the seat was closely contested when Gordon Campbell held it and also had little time to campaign there.

Asked repeatedly about polls that predicted her doom, Clark noted that she discussed that briefly with Prime Minister Stephen Harper when he called to congratulate her on winning the party’s fourth term. And she offered some advice on polling to reporters who gathered at the Vancouver cabinet offices.

“You guys get this stuff for free,” Clark said. “You should take it for what it’s worth.”

Results don’t become official until May 27, and there could still be changes in current legislature: 50 B.C. Liberals, 33 NDP MLAs, B.C. Green Andrew Weaver and Delta South independent Vicki Huntington. Clark said she regrets the loss of cabinet ministers Ida Chong and Margaret MacDiarmid, but she is pleased to have a balance of 25 returning MLAs and 25 newcomers in the B.C. Liberal caucus.

in a row, everyone is basking in the sunlight and spirits are high, but the rain and cooler temperatures are bound to return since it is only May after all.

The weather, a great conversation starter is also the source of so much inspiration for artists—think Group of Seven and their rugged images of Algonquin Park and the Canadian Shield, or William Turner and his images of the violent power of the sea or John Constable and his scientific records of atmospheric conditions—all have provided much fodder for discussion and admiration over the centuries.

Probably the most famous group of artists who were inspired by their surroundings and painted en plein air, a French expression which means “in the open air” were the Impressionists. Paintings by this group of artists are widely reproduced and readily available in poster and card formats. Perhaps you recognize the names of some of the artists – Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas.

Impressionism was a movement of the late 19th century in which Paris-based painters aligned themselves. Their works featured relatively small, yet visible brush strokes, open compositions, and an emphasis on the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities and ordinary subject matter. It was a different way of seeing. The Impressionists developed new

techniques resulting in an art of spontaneity, sunlight, and colour. The modern world became their subject matter and

the changing seasons, nature and leisure time their records of the day.

As the seasons and the weather changes in

Burnaby and throughout Metro Vancouver there is much to see and experience. Grab

your camera, a sketch book and pencil, or take a class and record your world—you will be surprised at what you see.

Southeast Vancouver is welcoming summer with the weekly farm market at River District, ParkLane Homes’ waterfront community that covers 130 acres and includes homes, shops, green space, restaurants and community amenities.

The first market took place on May 4, and saw more than 500 people come out to wander the market and purchase some goodies.

“The incredible turnout is a testament to the diversity and quality of this year’s farm and artisan vendors,” says Yosh Kashara, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at ParkLane Homes. “We couldn’t be happier with the support

from the community.”Market visitor and local resident

Jonathan Murkin was excited to see the market open this year.

“We’ve been waiting for the market to open,” he says. “It’s a great addition to the neighbourhood.”

Among the items being sold at the market are fruits and vegetables, breads, flowers, skin care and jewellery.

The farm market will take place every Saturday between May 4 and October 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kerr Street Plaza.

For a full list of vendors participating at the market and for more information, visit www.riverdistrict.ca

Everyone has fond memories of their childhood summer vacations, spending time with family and friends and playing outside for hours. Now you can make more memories with Shorewood Cottages, just minutes from the Canada-U.S. border in Birch Bay.

“You get the best of both worlds,” says Chris Hughes, a local RE/MAX broker who grew up in West Vancouver, and a partner in Compass Point Project Marketing. “It’s relaxed and quiet when you get here, but you can be at the beach in two minutes.”

Shorewood is located on a sunny plateau with over eleven acres total and seven acres of private parkland and trails, so outdoor activity will be a large part of your life. There will also be picnic areas, a bocce ball court, a community herb garden, an ocean lookout with a fire pit (called Sunset Point) and a clubhouse with an outdoor pool and hot tub. The picturesque setting includes a stream behind many of the cottages and ocean views from the front of the property. Hughes notes that the property is very dog-friendly, for those who could never leave man’s (or woman’s) best friend behind.

The cottages themselves are homes

away from home, with stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops, a cozy fireplace and hardwood flooring. Outside, you’ll find West Coast Craftsmen architecture and a private patio. There are a variety of two- and three-bedroom floorplans available, ranging from 1,082 to over 1,500 square feet.

The cottages “are high-end from a finishing perspective, but exceptional value,” Hughes says. “These are real residences you can stay in all year round.”

The location is the biggest draw for buyers. The famous C Shop, which sells candy, pizza, baked goods and other treats, is a minute away, along with miles of Birch Bay beachfront, restaurants and cafes, and plenty of outdoor activities. You’ll also find Birch Bay State Park and boat launch, water

slides, go-carts, mini-golf and several golf courses nearby.

“There are a ton of things to do,” Hughes says. “Most weekends you’ll find something going on.”

Among those things are arts and music festivals, fireworks,

the Birch Bay Marathon, parades, sandcastle contests, car shows and many other events. Plus crabbing, clamming and fishing are lots of fun for the family and great for dinner!

“We’re just 12 minutes from the border,” says Hughes. “You can come down with the family for the entire summer or just for the day.”

He also notes that if you’re not able to come down to the cottage yourself, you can rent it out to other families

looking for a beach getaway. The developers of the property

include two Canadian families, and most of the buyers so far are from the Lower Mainland.

“You can’t touch this price anywhere in the Lower Mainland,” Hughes says. “It’s much more affordable to buy in the U.S. Plus, there’s a minimal amount of legal fees (and) no property purchase tax.”

Cottages at Shorewood start in the low $200,000s. For more information, visit www.shorewoodcottages.com, email [email protected] or call 1-888-255-8121. The show cottages are open Wednesday through Sunday between noon and 4 p.m. or anytime by appointment.

Submitted photosThe cottages at Shorewood are built in a West Coast Craftsmen style, above, with plenty of natural light, cozy stone fireplaces, left, and a variety of two- and three-bedroom floorplans. The beach is just two minutes away, top, so outdoor activity will be an integral part of your life.
