The National Energy Board (NEB) has extended the review process by seven months for the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project to allow for more scrutiny of a new route through Burnaby.

Last month Kinder Morgan told the NEB its preferred route to the Westridge Marine Terminal in North Burnaby would now run through Burnaby Mountain. It also stated it needed to do more studies which should be completed by Dec. 1.

While the National Energy Board Act requires the review be completed within 15 months, if the NEB requires the applicant to provide more information, the period of time it takes to comply is not included in that time frame, the NEB explained in a press release.

The period excluded from the time limit calculation will run July 11 to Feb. 3, 2015.

Fraser Institute study finds it tops list of Metro Vancouver cities Wanda [email protected]

It appears the right-leaning Fraser Institute is all for the approach to civic finances taken by left-leaning Burnaby city hall.

In a report released Tuesday, the think tank compared the debt and other liabilities at the City of Vancouver to other Metro Vancouver municipalities.

As of 2012, the latest year for comparable data, Vancouver was in the red by $268 million.

Burnaby, on the other hand, was in the strongest financial position with $676 million in net financial assets.

Richmond was in second place at $469 million in the black, followed by Coquitlam with $166 million in net assets.

On the other end of the scale, Belcarra was just ahead of Vancouver with $3 million in

net liabilities, followed by West Vancouver with $1 million in

liabilities.The report notes that

Vancouver is unlike other Metro cities since it’s the only one that can directly issue long-term debt without first getting the approval of the Municipal Finance Authority, provincial

government and the regional district board.

From 2002 to 2012, Vancouver has consistently been in the red

when other Metro Vancouver municipalities have collectively been in a net asset position.

Its net liabilities more than quadrupled between 2006 and 2011, partly due to having to bankroll the troubled Olympic Village project as part of the 2010 Olympics.

“An important consequence of increasing liabilities is that the cost of servicing municipal government debt also increases, which means less money is available for municipal services,” the report said.

If there’s a magnet for visitors at Burnaby Village Museum, it appears to be the mere sound of an antique car engine starting.

That was the case Tuesday as museum staff and interpreters prepared to present its new Auto Shop Apprentice program at the Royal Oak Garage building.

For years the museum has offered rides around the village in old Model T Fords, a popular feature that helps bring history to life.

This year, volunteers brainstormed and came up with the auto shop program to teach visitors how cars used to work in the old days, said museum programs coordinator

presentation includes a brief history of transportation in Burnaby. The garage building was recreated based on an actual Royal Oak Garage located on Kingsway and Marlborough back in the 1920s, Pleshakov said.

There were 16 such repair garages in Burnaby in 1925, putting it at the forefront of the trend toward motor vehicles, said interpreter Russell Collins.

Collins explained to visitors how car wheels started out as metal loops connected by spokes and transitioned to solid rubber tires before moving to pneumatic tires more forgiving of bumps in the road. Here, six-year-old Kenji Lam was recruited as the “apprentice” to demonstrate pumping up an old inner tube.

He then helped

demonstrate how an old-style gasoline pump operated.

But it’s the Model T delivery truck that’s the big draw.

“Model Ts are a totally different thing to drive,” said interpreter Ewen Sheard, who’s also a licenced mechanic. “People are absolutely amazed at

their complexity and the difference.”

There’s perhaps no starker contrast between then and now than in the Model T’s safety features—

or lack of them.Collins pointed out the

museum’s specimen has no seatbelts, bumpers or turning signals. Heck, it doesn’t even have doors. It does, however, have windshield wipers and a horn.

Then comes time to start the engine. Perched on the passenger side of the car’s bench, Lam plugs his ears as he learns how loud—and smelly—these old cars are.

The presentation over, another Model T packed with passengers turns heads as it drives by and the crowd disperses, heading over to the museum’s version of an amusement ride queue.

New program sheds light on old-time cars

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said his city’s approach is simply to “pay off debts and put money in the bank to deal with things in the future.”

While Burnaby’s net assets would suggest a big pot of money just sitting there to be used, much of it is set aside for future uses, such as replacing aging equipment and buildings. Burnaby also uses it to self-finance its capital projects, such as the $42-million Edmonds

Community Centre, paying itself interest to ensure the reserves continue to grow in step with inflation.

The city’s financial position “increases the value of land [for its citizens] and it gives them a piece of the rock,” Corrigan said. “You know in Burnaby it’s a solid government where you’re financed for the future.”

But Corrigan declined to pass judgment on Vancouver’s situation, noting that city has to fund additional infrastructure due

to its role as “the centre of it all.”He is also not a fan of the

Fraser Institute’s work. “Often they think by doing a

very simplistic economic analysis that they are actually informing the public about anything. It’s not nearly as simple as they wish it was,” he said.

“They make reports … to suggest everybody is overtaxed and business is overburdened. That kind of an argument permeates everything the Fraser Institute does.”

Coun. Paul McDonell, a member of Burnaby’s finance committee, did suggest Vancouver takes on more than it perhaps should.

“We get criticized for some of our housing policies but we’re not going to burden the taxpayers with that,” McDonell said. “It’s not a city role to provide social housing.”

He noted that Burnaby’s massive reserves generates interest income to help keep down property taxes. As for critics that

suggest the reserves should be used to lower taxes further, he said, “You don’t have that forever if you start spending it like that.”

Burnaby’s fiscally cautious approach likely stems from it having gone into receivership during the Great Depression, McDonell said.

“When it came out the people ahead of us said we don’t want this to happen again. That philosophy, regardless of the stripe of the government, has carried on and it’s grown.”

The overall deadline for the NEB to complete the review and submit a recommendation to the federal government was originally July 2, 2015.

It has now been extended to Jan. 25, 2016. The federal government would then have six months to make a final decision.

Once Kinder Morgan provides the results of its studies on the Burnaby Mountain section, the NEB and intervenors will have until Jan. 13, 2015 to submit questions related to them. The company is required to respond to them by Feb. 3, 2015.

There will also be an opportunity for people to apply as new intervenors, said NEB spokesperson Sarah Kiley in an interview from Calgary.

“It’s only going to be people who have some kind of tie to this particular section of the route, it’s about four kilometres.” The NEB would also consider applicants with information or expertise on tunnelling, horizontal directional drilling or “anything else that’s related specifically to that piece of the route.”

That process will open in September, but a deadline for applications has yet to be set, she said.

Kinder Morgan originally proposed the pipeline run underneath Burnaby Mountain Parkway, Hastings Street and Cliff Avenue to Westridge terminal.

The option to tunnel underneath the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area was first proposed as an alternate route. But it became the preferred alignment to reduce construction impact on the neighbourhood and avoid direct impact on any Westridge homes, project spokesperson Lizette Parsons Bell told the NewsLeader last April.

While the company needs to do geotechnical studies in the area, so far it has not received permission from Burnaby city hall to do so. Burnaby is on record as opposing the project.

“Trans Mountain has indicated they’re having a bit of trouble accessing the land on Burnaby Mountain, which is owned by the city,” Kiley said. The company is continuing to work with the city to gain access.

It they’re not successful, the company can apply to the NEB to force Burnaby to provide access to allow those studies to go ahead.

Kinder Morgan has not yet made such an application and the NEB would also want to hear Burnaby’s side of the issue before making a decision, she said.

Meanwhile, Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart issued a press release celebrating

the news of the delay. “Despite crafting a

hearing process that excluded many local residents, the NEB could not turn a blind eye to a mystery tunnel through Burnaby Mountain the size of the Canada

Line,” said Stewart. “This is a long-overdue victory for this community and reinforces what residents have been saying all along; this is a bad project and a very bad process.”

The NEB’s recommendation will now be submitted to the federal government after the next federal election scheduled for Oct. 19, 2015, he noted.

The proposed $5.4-billion pipeline twinning between Edmonton and Burnaby would nearly triple Trans Mountain’s capacity to 890,000 barrels of oil per day and bring hundreds of additional oil tankers through Burrard Inlet each year.

With the end of the FIFA World Cup, the spirit of international sports competition will carry on in Burnaby, the site of the 2014 Quidditch Global Games on Saturday, July 19.

The world’s best quidditch teams will compete in the real-life, full-contact version of the sport depicted in the Harry Potter book and movie series.

More than 120 players from seven countries and three continents will participate, representing Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The tournament will take place at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West, 3677 Kensington Ave., between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will run from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. Admission and parking is free for

spectators. Seating is limited and available on first-come, first-serve basis.

While unlike in the Harry Potter stories players will not fly around on brooms, all the other rules are essentially the same. There are seven players on each team who must run with a broom held between their legs at all times.

Chasers try to score with the quaffle (volleyball) through the opponent’s hoops, players hurl bludgers (dodgeballs) to temporarily knock opponents out of the game, a keeper defends the hoops and a seeker chases the snitch. In the books and movies the snitch is a magical, golden flying ball. Here a velcro tail is attached to the shorts of a very fast runner dressed in yellow. The game ends when the snitch is caught and the winning team earns an extra 30

points, equivalent to three goals.

Grand opening for playground at Confederation

Burnaby city hall will hold the grand opening of the new playground and water play area at Confederation Park (Beta Avenue and Albert Street) on Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m.

The new North Burnaby playground includes a 700-square-metre rubberized surface, a multi-person see-saw, spinner bowls, child-size picnic tables, swing sets, and a climbing rock.

Evening, Day 1: Arrive at campground to discover that no one tents anymore. Except us, that is. Squeeze tent onto pad between two houses on wheels.

Morning, Day 2: These houses on wheels are powered by generators. So peaceful.

Late morning, Day 3: Park ranger leads us on a short hike from the campground. Most of us are families with younger children. Another couple on the walk has a boy about five, the same age as our youngest. So far they’ve been content to let him roam freely. I’m an anxious type, always in awe of laissez-faire parenting, so I watch in envy as they let the boy totter along a hillside, following the ranger in search of cactus. The slope soon steepens and the path narrows as it cuts across a steep grade, and I note a subtle rift for the Cool Couple.

Mom has happily wandered ahead. Dad follows the son who teeters along the strip of dirt. “Single file, buddy!” he chirps, a note of panic betraying his mellow pose. “Stick to the path, big guy! Single file! Watch where you’re going! Single file!”

A small victory. Yes, my five-year-old’s palm is clutched firmly in my hand. But at least it’s not sweating.

Later morning, Day 3: Reach a lookout. It’s your standard viewpoint—trail ends at a wide open area, and at one end the land just falls away. There are no fences or warning signs. My still occasionally random five-year-old’s hand is still clutched in mine. Meantime, toddle toddle toddle toddle… there goes someone’s two-year-old toward the edge. Ten feet. Five feet… closing…

There’s a parent about to intervene here, right?

“Far enough!” I blurt. The boy stops and eyes me. Now the mother and grandmother, previously oblivious, are on the case.

Later, I ponder this. Can this type of parent smell people like

me, and know they can just zone out for a bit?

Morning, Day 5: Begin tearing down tent at our sun-bathed campsite, already past 30 degrees. Inside the tent, rolling up air mattresses, sleeping bags, packing children’s things it’s got to be 40 degrees. Attempts to usefully engage children in helping out have been abandoned as unpacking their mis-packing in order to pack feels a bit silly. Oldest son is cool in the car, reading his comic book. “Let’s get a move on,” he mutters to me, and for the briefest of moments I feel apologetic. The heat has turned me perverse.

Late Morning, Day 5: Discover ant colony under tent. Thousands of them, dashing in all directions, carrying little white… rice krispies? Ahh... eggs.

Morning, Day 6: At a hotel now. A shower has revived the parents. Now in breakfast room, eating cardboard pastries and shiny fruit. A father nearby is having a fit over his son’s eating habits.

“You always do this! Why do you always do this? I’ve told you over and over to stop doing this!”

The boy is about six. The father is beaking in his ear. The boy is a sea of calm, not responding. Perhaps he turned off the volume months ago. Now he’s just waiting for his dad to run out of gas. The boy looks over at me now, smiles in a way that says “what can you do?” and rolls his eyes.

Afternoon, Day 7: Note to self: purchase car with air conditioning. Spend six hours on highway with temperature around 35 degrees. Get gas at Hope mega station jammed with miserable, hot, dirty fellow travellers. Dante’s modern Inferno would put the inner circle of hell here.

Later Afternoon, Day 7: Or here, somewhere on Highway 1 near Langley where the traffic stops for no apparent reason.

Evening, Day 7: Arrive home to find the cool West Coast no longer so. Turn on backyard sprinkler, and begin dismantling the car. Oldest son irritated that I’m not joining him in sprinkler, opting instead to unstuff our Toyota.

Notes from an Okanagan holiday

The lengthy and at times delayed review of Fraser Health Authority has come up with some worthwhile objectives. However, given that the minister of health believes Fraser Health’s budget is adequate, don’t expect a lot of improvements in health care any time soon.

The review’s main conclusion is that acute care hospitals are utilized more than they need to be by residents.

Thus costs keep rising, given that acute care is far and away the most expensive type of care offered.

Why do people go to acute care so often? In some cases, it’s because they don’t have a family doctor. Population growth and a limited number of general practitioners mean that at least one-third of the population do not have anyone in the health system who sees them regularly, knows them by name and has a good handle on their medical issues.

Some have chronic conditions for which there is no option aside from acute care. The review noted the value of setting up clinics that specialize in treating people with certain conditions, or are part of certain groups. Unfortunately only nine per cent off the FHA budget goes toward community care, with 57 per cent going to acute care.

NDP critic Judy Darcy points out that FHA gets 28 per cent of the overall spending on health in B.C., yet is home to 36 per cent of the population.

While that can be partially explained by the fact that specialist hospitals such as B.C. Children’s are in Vancouver, and by the fact that the FHA population is (on average) somewhat younger than other B.C. regions, it also illustrates the fact that this area has been chronically underfunded in health services for a long, long time.

And it’s doubtful anything will change anytime soon.

Lauren Gomez is going for gold again at the B.C. Summer Games.

Gomez won her first as the winning pitcher for Fraser Valley (Zone 3) in the 2012 BC Summer Games fastpitch softball final in Surrey. She gets a second crack at grabbing gold this weekend in the 2014 Games in Nanaimo this weekend.

This year, softball’s eligibility has changed from under-14 to U-16. But this time she’s playing for Fraser River-Delta (Zone 4) because she now lives in Burnaby.

Although Gomez is a tournament veteran, the Games is different because during the games they get to stay with athletes from all over the province without their parents in tow.

“It was fun competing against other districts,” the modest, quiet five-foot-seven fireballer says of her first Summer Games.

It also provides an opportunity for Gomez to play with others she normally competes against, and play against those who are usually her Delta Heat teammates. Although it’s far from a slam dunk, Gomez expects it will be the same two zones battling it out for gold again.

“It’s basically Delta against Delta,” says Gomez.

Even though it’s three years away, Gomez has her sights set on a softball scholarship, preferably for a school somewhere in California.

She plays for the Northwest Sidewinders, an organization based in Snohomish, Wash., that brings in players from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and B.C.

That gives her the opportunity to showcase herself all over the continent. She recently returned from a tournament in Colorado where there were about 300 recruiters. The summer is taken up with tournaments in places like Portland, Albuquerque, Seattle, San Diego. Huntington Beach, Calif., and possibly Toronto.

So a trip to Nanaimo for the B.C. Summer Games, while hectic in a good way, is a welcome

respite from rental cars and airports.

Gomez didn’t start playing softball until she was 11. She’s come a long way in a short time.

“I didn’t think I would get this far with it,” admits Gomez. “I didn’t expect to get this good.”

The pitcher has all the pressure. When not hurling she plays shortstop, the most pressure-packed position on defence, and centre field.

She calmly soaks up and embraces high-level competition. The big games, her father Paul says, are harder on him than her.

So is catching her 60 mph fastball. He’s helped her practise pitching over the years. But nowadays he can’t handle it when Lauren fires at full speed. “It’s dangerous,” says Paul.

Softball is her main sport, but not her only one. Even though she was only in Grade 9 she played on Burnaby Mountain secondary’s varsity basketball team. She also helped the school win the Burnaby/New West cross country banner.

“She always wanted to beat me at whatever it was, it didn’t matter,” says Paul. “One time I thought when she was about 10 I could still outrun her. We set up in [a start position] to go on the count of three. She was off the line she was already gone, and I knew that was it.”

It’s a memory that brings a smile to Lauren’s face.

So would a second gold medal.

Ford parties on with fun new FiestaTORONTO: It’s a lovely day on the backcountry roads of suburban Ontar-io, just west of Toronto, chosen to show off this ‘special’ version of the popular Ford Fiesta. It’s an enjoyable drive through a pretty landscape, dotted with quaint farms, moving along at a decent speed. Easy to forget the Fiesta is powered by Ford’s smallest engine, the 1.0L EcoBoost.With three-cylinders, an output of 123 horses and peak torque of 125 lb-ft., it’s not something to scoff at. Furthermore, there’s an overboost feature that will give you access to 148 lb-ft of torque for up to 15 seconds. Furthermore, Ford touts it as having the best highway fuel economy in its class. It uses an estimated 4.3L/100km on the highway and 6.2L/100km in the city. Along with this new engine, there are also a few tweaks for the 2014 model year.You’ll find new headlamps with chrome accents, a new decklid and tail lamps. Inside, there are new steering wheel controls, a new door design, a new cluster design and additional chrome accents on the door handles and throughout. Not to mention the

additional cupholder in the rear!Complete with a new interior and exterior look, the Fiesta certainly adds life to the party.It exudes pep and still has a lively personality. That can be attributed to a 5-speed manual trans-mission. With the 5-speed manual, the gear throws felt a little long, but then again, we’re not talking about the ST, its the Fiesta’s performance-ori-ented sibling. Noteworthy: the cabin stays serene even at highway speeds; when you’re cruising in fifth.

Keeping unwanted noise out of the car’s interior is always high on the priority list for subcompacts. It has a roomy trunk, accommodating up to 422L behind the second row in the hatchback.Of the two body styles offered – there’s a sedan or 5-door – I fancy the hatch-back. I also think its styling has a little more flare.As for handling, we had the chance to put it through an autocross-style track to demonstrate its abilities in tighter, higher speed turns. While many people probably won’t drive the Fiesta like this – even though it’s quite fun – it can handle its share of bends without

faltering. Matched with its electric power-assisted steering, you have a good amount of steering feel whether driving at high or low speeds.The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. Atop sits a colour display, followed by Ford’s infotainment system, followed by the climate con-trols. It’s hard to get lost in its setup, and the buttons are clearly marked with large writing. Equipping the Fiesta with the 1.0L en-

gine has a $1,295 premium. What that gives you is the extra bit of power and the fuel economy savings. This engine can only be outfitted on the SE trim, which has a starting MSRP of $14,866. However, it’s available on both the sedan and hatchback models.Overall, the Ford Fiesta 1.0L has its benefits. A snappy engine, a great look and a comfortable ride quality. Show some respect for this fleet car favouriteThe much-maligned fleet car Chevrolet Impala is the “I don’t get no respect!” sedan of the auto world, if I may quote the late Rodney Dangerfield.The Impala I rented in Hawaii early this year was confirmation of the beating, while on the job, that a car like this has to endure. Yet, you have to respect the sturdiness and competence that a car like this must possess. Body scars left by a multi-tude of indifferent drivers were visible evidence of the abuse. Although basic on the inside, the Impala turned out to be surprisingly comfortable and the big-gest surprise of all was its performance. Impala offers good power, a

quiet passenger cabin and a comfortable ride, which helped make the overall driving experience a pleas-ant one.Chevrolet first introduced an Impala way back in 1958 and at one time, it was the best-selling car in America. The last time I had driven

an Impala was in 2009. Chevrolet had given it a new flex-fuel E85 engine upgrade, so that it can accept up to 85 per cent ethanol content in its fuel. While an Impala is un-likely to be on your “dream drive” list, if you’re simply looking for an inexpensive, reliable and roomy, near-new sedan, then add it to your used car drive list. In 2010, even the base LS trim came with air condi-tioning, power mirrors, wal-nut burl (imitation) interior accent trim, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, power windows and power locks with keyless entry and automatic headlamps.Our Hawaii rental was an LT trim which added 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped wheel with audio

controls, CD/MP3 stereo and a remote starter. The top-line LTZ adds 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, heated mirrors, deck lid spoiler, auto-dimming rearview mirror, eight-way power driver’s seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth hands-free con-

nectivity, sport suspension, electronic stability control, and a theft deterrent system. The 3.5-litre V6 (standard on LS and LT) engine can generate 214 horsepower. Its companion four-speed automatic is smooth, competent and re-liable, yet it lags behind five

and six-speed units offered by competitors. Fuel consumption is still decent at 11.3/7.0 L/100 km (city/highway). The 3.9-litre (LTZ) engine can generate 240 horsepower. Although it is classified as a mid-size sedan, an Impala actually offers close to full-

size room inside. Chevrolet added standard body-colour side mouldings to the 2011 model year Impala, and the OnStar sys-tem got a new Turn-by-Turn voice navigation feature. Major powertrain upgrades followed in 2012, with a new 3.6-litre V6 replaced both the 3.5-litre and 3.9-li-tre engines in all trim levels. A six-speed automatic transmission also replaced the previous four-speed automatic. No changes were made in 2013, which was the last year of this generation Impala.

When the Porsche Cayenne was introduced, I questioned why the iconic sports car maker would build a grocery-getting SUV.Boy was I ever wrong. Porsche was not only successful introduced the Cayenne, it went into become its best-selling vehicle and – wait for it – I even bought one! So, with the latest introduction of a smaller SUV called Macan, there is less fanfare around the fact that it actually exists and more excitement about how it performs. The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 for a base model or $82,200 for the turbo?

LooksThe Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine options. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs only 17kg. “Side Blades” decorate the lower body of the Macan and can be ordered in black, a match-ing body colour or carbon fibre. The

back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy, the taillights wrap around from the side and into the tail-gate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the windshield wiper that elec-tronically releases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine.

InsideWhat the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior re-finement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with fine leather and a simple design that makes interacting with his SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though. The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Since I own a Cayenne, I have a great perspective on the amount of room this Macan offers. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. The Cayenne is a perfect family choice, the Macan I believe is suited for a single person or active professional couple. Not to say it couldn’t be use for family duty, it just wouldn’t be my choice.DriveThe launch of the Macan in California provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack. Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo both come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driving in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrading the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspen-sion Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride. This upgrade was noticeable on the track. The turbo comes standard with this setup but the added power and expense was only really noticeable when the Macan was pushed very hard around the racetrack. For regular commuting the S is just fine.VerdictI love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue; the Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspen-sion and sport-chrono settings for the 7-speed duel clutch automatic. When I configure a base S with the features I would want like navigation, PASM, front and rear park-ing sensors, bigger wheels, Bose stereo and a few other odds and ends, comes to almost $75,000, never mind the $82,200 starting price of the turbo. Having recently driven the spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, and they will sell every one to people who want to have the latest, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top.
