Pioneering journalist spent twilight years in BurnabyMario [email protected]
A pioneer of journalism who spent her twilight years living at Seton Villa in Burnaby has passed away.
Simma Holt was 92 when she died on Friday.
Holt was the first female managing editor of The Manitoban, the student newspaper at the University of Manitoba. And throughout her career, she continued to forge new paths for women.
When she was hired as an assistant to the city desk editors at the Vancouver Sun in 1944, she didn’t tackle the kinds of stories traditional doled out to women, the social beat or home economics column.
Instead she did ride-alongs with the fire department, and cultivated sources in the police department.
Her ability to disarm people often got her stories. When a family suffered a tragedy, it was often Holt who went to their home to collect a recent photo.
She also covered the waterfront beat, mixing as easily with rugged longshoremen as shipping-industry executives.
White Spot wins fight with Milani Plumbing over Kingsway propertiesWanda [email protected]
White Spot and its parent company have come out on top after a B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled they can buy the site of their Kingsway location in Burnaby and the property next door.
The legal bun fight included several parties involved in the sale of 5550 Kingsway and 6679
MacPherson Ave. in Burnaby.Justice Mark McEwan ruled last
week in favour of White Spot and Shato Ventures Ltd., a subsidiary of the restaurant chain’s parent company, Shato Holdings, which was seeking to have its purchase of the two properties go through. At issue was whether the company was eligible to purchase both sites or only the one on which its restaurant sits.
The two adjacent properties were jointly owned by Tom Howe Holdings Ltd. and R.S.H.
Investments Ltd. Through its lease, White Spot had right of first refusal to buy its Kingsway site, while CIRP Management Ltd. had one on
the second property to the east, at the corner of Kingsway and MacPherson.
When the vendors decided they
wanted to sell, they hired Colliers, Macaulay, Nicolls Ltd. to market the land. They received an offer from Alim Holdings Ltd., owned by Vern Milani of Milani Plumbing, which has an office located next door to the west of White Spot.
“Alim’s interest in Lots F and 98 related to its ownership of nearby properties and a desire to assemble a package of land that would be suitable for a large scale development,” said McEwan in his reasons for judgment.

Alim’s offer was for both parcels of land for a total of $10 million.
The offer was not segregated—it did not specify the amount to be paid for each property—“because Alim considered it unlikely that White Spot and CIRP would be interested in exercising their rights,” McEwan said.
It appears Alim was only half right. CIRP did not attempt to purchase its site but White Spot did, matching Alim’s offer to buy both parcels.
“White Spot submits that Alim’s problem is simply that it made an offer it did not expect White Spot to accept,” said McEwan.
Alim argued that White Spot is not permitted to exercise its
right of first refusal outside the boundaries of the land it has the lease over.
But according to case law, McEwan said, while the holder of a right of first refusal cannot be forced to purchase more than the lot it has that right over, it “does not specifically preclude” the possibility that they could agree to buying more.
McEwan noted that Alim’s
unsegregated offer should not have been accepted by the vendor, who appears to have breached their lease in tendering it to White Spot.
“It seems rather illogical to suggest that White Spot’s only recourse is to resist the offer and fight a potentially protracted battle over attribution, when it is prepared to accept the unsegregated offer and effectively
turn the tables on Alim.”Neither Peter Toigo, managing
director of Shato Holdings, nor Vern Milani, responded to interview requests by the NewsLeader’s press time.
As for the future of the two properties in question, they are designated for medium-density, mixed-use development in the City of Burnaby’s Royal Oak community plan.
When she was assigned to cover meetings at the Terminal City Club, though, a male bastion at the time that didn’t allow females unless they were invited guests, she had to enter through the kitchen.
While covering crime, Holt befriended convicts, and her stories were instrumental in saving three of them from execution.
In 1974, the federal Liberals recruited Holt to run for the party in Vancouver-Kingsway. Even though she wasn’t a fan of leader Pierre Trudeau.
“I didn’t like (him),” Holt told the NewsLeader in 2011.
“I thought he was a jerk, I hated Trudeaumania.”
Nevertheless, Senator Ray Perrault invited her to a photo session with Trudeau for prospective candidates, urging her to consider a candidacy.
Holt and a friend had done a story about Trudeau’s wife Margaret for Chatelaine magazine despite much difficulty finding
members of her West Vancouver family willing to be interviewed.
So she confronted Trudeau about it saying the story was “No damn thanks to you,” Holt recalled.
“Well he broke up and I
thought geez, I can go with this guy if he can take that much lip from me.”
She won the riding, and quickly won over the respect of her new boss, who once told her, “You know Simma, I like people who
go against the stream.”And that she did, occasionally
voting against her own party on issues she felt strongly about, like the Liberals’ bill to abolish capital punishment.
Holt said she wanted it
retained for exceptional circumstances.
Holt’s political career lasted one term, although she did briefly do some work for the presidential campaign of George Bush Sr.
She also led candidates’ debates in her adopted riding of Burnaby-Douglas and did advocacy work for the owners of leaky condos.
Holt published her autobiography, Memoirs of a Loose Cannon, in 2008.
She moved to Burnaby in 2010, where her tiny apartment was crowded with mementos of her colourful career, including signed photos of Trudeau and former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir.
• A service was held for Holt at the Schara Tzedeck Cemetery in New Westminster on Sunday.
—with files from Wanda Chow
MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERSimma Holt also had a brief political career, serving as a Member of Parliament in Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal government for one term in the 1970s.

Victoria Gray, marketing director for Canterbury Coffee, shows off one of their biodegradeable coffee pods.WANDA CHOWNEWSLEADER
Wanda [email protected]
It seems everyone at least knows someone with one of those trendiest of coffee makers, the one-cup-at-a-time types that have consumers eschewing bags of beans for boxes of plastic cups.
But while the innovation has exploded in popularity the last couple of years, creating opportunities for those in the coffee industry, it’s also created a growing problem of consumer waste.
Burnaby-based Canterbury Coffee has come up with a solution—OneCoffee, Canada’s only organic, fair-trade and 99 per cent biodegradable single-serve coffee pod.
The company, whose offices and warehouse opened in the Big Bend area in 2013, has roasting and manufacturing facilities in Richmond and in Oakville, Ont. It has 150 employees, of which about 60 work out of its Burnaby office.
It’s got a diverse customer base, from restaurants and hotels to buyers of its retail coffee products in stores.
Canterbury’s director of marketing, Victoria Gray, said the key to the popularity of machines such as those offered by Keurig is “it’s super convenient.” It brews just one cup so each person can choose
the variety of coffee they prefer, such as in the case of one being a decaffeinated drinker and everyone else, not so much.
But that convenience can come at a cost to the environment.
“In 2013, the stats I’ve seen, there were over 10 billion K-Cups used,” Gray said. “It’s all garbage.”
At issue is the packaging. A regular K-Cup used in Keurig machines has ground coffee in a small hard plastic cup. The machine punches holes in the top and bottom to allow the hot water to flow through it to create a cup of coffee. Afterwards, the used cups are tossed in the trash, likely to end up in the landfill.
Canterbury has come up with OneCoffee, a version that is 99 per cent biodegradable by weight. It’s a soft pod with components such as a ring and lid made of compostable “biomass” plastic derived from plants. Instead of a plastic cup, the organic and fair-trade ground coffee inside is held in a polyester mesh filter which produces coffee closer to that of a French press, Gray said.
That mesh filter is the only part that’s made of regular plastic. The company is working on finding a greener alternative that can stand up to the heat used in the pods’ manufacturing
process while allowing them to become 100 per cent biodegradable.
And while the new Keurig 2.0, that company’s latest machines, include technology that prevents the use of coffee cups and pods not licensed by the company, Canterbury is working on a solution to that too, Gray said.
The company is taking its pods a step further, commissioning tests to prove their compostability in industrial-type processes, such as those used by Metro Vancouver’s food-scraps pickup programs.
Once it’s proven, Canterbury plans to approach local municipalities in an effort to have them accepted in those programs. Gray added the challenge is the differences among composting facilities used by municipalities across Canada.
But Canterbury is seeking the greenest solution possible, a product that can be tossed into household green bins. “Ultimately that’s our goal, because we don’t want to see any more single-serve coffee end up in a landfill,” she said.
The hope is that their product will create enough consumer demand that other coffee companies will follow suit.

Was the driver of a car involved in a near head-on collision on Greystone Drive distracted?
A B.C. Supreme Court judge thinks so.
Justice Gordon Funt recently ruled Yita Ricci was solely liable when her 1992 Saturn collided with a 2001 Honda Civic that was eastbound on Greystone Drive on Dec. 30, 2010.
In a trial held last June to determine who was responsible for the accident, court heard Ricci was on her way to work at a grocery store that afternoon when her car drifted into the
eastbound lane and collided with the Civic being driven by Ehab Al-Tamimi, with his wife Eva in the passenger seat, as they headed home from shopping.
A photograph presented to the court of the interior of Ricci’s car showed an open pop can, an unlit cigarette and two small lighters.
Ricci conceded she might have been drinking pop while she was driving, and that she sometimes smokes and drives. She said she often keeps a cigarette and lighter on the car’s centre console for convenience.
Each side in the case used testimony from accident
reconstruction experts to determine where the vehicles were in the roadway when they collided.
Funt ruled the position of gouge marks in the pavement caused by the impact of the two cars supported the notion that Ricci’s car had drifted across the centre line into the eastbound lane.
Weighing “the balance of probabilities,” Funt ruled Ricci responsible for causing the collision. “The fact that the defendant may have been reaching for something or similarly distracted would only serve to strengthen the finding,” said Funt.

In the last couple of days, close to $3 million has been donated to the creators of the Exploding Kittens card game. In the time it took me to write this column, the total increased by about $100,000.
Welcome to the world of crowdfunding, a red-hot online phenomenon that is revolutionizing the way individuals and organizations gain access to “free” money, for anything from a pizza recipe to cancer treatment ... to a deck of bizarre humour playing cards.
For the uninitiated, the concept might seem more than a bit far-fetched: Come up with an idea that requires funding. Design a simple campaign explaining what it’s about. Place it on an Internet platform. Wait for the money to roll in.
Pretty off the wall, right?According to Wikipedia, in
2013, the crowdfunding industry generated more than $5 billion worldwide.
That figure was bound to be far surpassed last year.
There are dozens of crowdfunding providers out there, with some of the largest
being GoFundMe, Kickstarter and FundRazr, which has partnered with Black Press to create BlackPress4Good.com.
FundRazr, based in Vancouver, has helped raise over $52 million from over 45,000 campaigns in 37 different countries around the world.
This week, I had an interesting chat with a communications person working for a major fundraising initiative who, of course, was looking to get media exposure for an iconic fundraiser.
We talked about the countless worthy causes that are out there, and people’s capacity to absorb and respond generously to yet another story of a family in need, or a sick child requiring special medical treatment.
She acknowledged the difficulty of appealing for funding in this intensely crowded
field, especially in the climate of a challenged economy.
Fundraising agencies know full well the key factor of “donor fatigue,” which is when the requests for funding simply overwhelms the pool of contributors.
She observed that organized fundraising is becoming increasingly “fractured,” with the emergence of more and more charitable causes and campaigns, all seeking public attention and support.
And into this heartfelt melee comes the Internet and crowdfunding – representing a light-year leap from local, regional or even global appeals by major agencies such as Red Cross, to any single project or cause that can tap into the worldwide online audience.
There is no question that a tremendous amount of good is being done via online fundraising. Kids are getting medical help. Families are helped through the trauma and loss caused by fires and other catastrophes. Young people get a boost in their post-secondary education endeavours.
Locally, several campaigns are seeing success, including a wildlife rehabilitation centre that has generated thousands to help injured creatures.
The variety of online donating opportunities is utterly vast. And they are all dipping into a pool of available cash – albeit made fantastically larger and more complex by the global digital diaspora.
The crowdfunding phenomenon is heavily fuelled by social media, an environment in which there are few rules, and the ones that do exist can change tomorrow. And in among all those laudable causes and campaigns and appeals for cash are quirky investment projects, such as a card game featuring exploding kittens, that can go viral in hours, generating millions of dollars for a few guys who are probably right now looking at their computer screens, watching something unfold beyond their wildest dreams.
And ours.
Andrew Holota is editor of The Abbotsford News.
Millions for a cause, or card game
Terrorism is on the minds of many people these days, given recent events in France.
Canada is not immune to the challenges posed by terrorists, with ISIS specifically naming Canada as a target.
The organization, which holds parts of Iraq and Syria and continues to engage in brutal attacks on innocent people, is under attack by Canada and many other allied nations.
Many Canadians felt immune from terrorism until the attacks on Canadian Forces members in Ottawa and Quebec last fall. While the people involved in both of those cases apparently acted on their own – and at least one was suffering from mental illness – the attacks shook many Canadians.
The federal government is ready and willing to boost surveillance of potential “radicalized” individuals, and its moves in this area will be supported by a large majority of citizens.
Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that. The world is a much smaller place, with air travel to almost any place easily available, and social media used extensively to shape and change peoples’ attitudes.
Some people suggest that all terrorists belong to one specific religious group and feel that the root of the problem is that particular religion. This is a very narrow-minded and clearly wrong-headed approach to take. The fact is that there are people of many different ethnic and religious backgrounds who feel they need to take their grievances and explode them on the world stage. Some are born and raised elsewhere; some are homegrown.
Our leaders have no easy task. They must determine effective ways to combat terrorist threats, balancing the need to retain public freedoms.
And we members of the public must educate ourselves, so that we do not create the kind of terror we hope to eradicate.

COMMENTRe: Man found dead in Riverside ditch
The Riverside area, formerly known as Big Bend, has become an environmental dumping ground. Dumped bodies, garbage, chemicals, drug paraphernalia, noise, and fires all of which add to the environmental degradation of the small, enclosed community.
Mayor Derek Corrigan and council fight for the obvious political benefits opposing Kinder Morgan and thereby appear as mindful stewards for Burnaby.
But they fail to provide the same stewardship for the small community of Riverside.
Why? I can only speculate based on my past 30 years of residence in the area.
I know we are not a significant area in size or income to the city. We do not generate a lot of income to the city coffers, we have maintenance requirements because we are on peat soil, and we are classified as A2 land. But some residents are valuable agricultural providers of greens to restaurants and stores and help to depress food costs for everyone from approximately April to September. And who does not like our nurseries that are loaded with great flowers and plants? We are a valuable rat-running route for commuters who want to get to 20th Street in New Westminster to head to all of the bridges. We have poor lighting which leads to unsafe pedestrian and vehicular safety. We have poor road conditions because of about 30 years of neglect.
We suffer the environmental and safety issues to property and lives of residents from registered and non-registered grow-ops and meth labs. We have people dumping their trash on our streets, on city property, the old foundry, the old Riverside school, and along other streets and culverts. All city property.
Do all of these same environmental degradations happen in any other section of Burnaby on a daily basis? I think not.
Perhaps the city and council have greater plans for our area which may be a strategy of neglect and degradation so as to facilitate the re-zoning so as to build more Market Crossings, and light industry to increase the tax base?
We have environmental issues to be dealt with today.
Yet we are treated with neglect and distain as our
environmental degradation does not generate an opportunity for great publicity.
We pay taxes and in exchange receive environmental degradation, disdain and disrespect from our city.

ICBC blocking 25,000 drivers for Port Mann toll evasionAnother 17,000 insurance refusal notices apply to Golden Ears Bridge users
Jeff NagelBlack Press
Thousands of B.C. drivers are being frozen out of driver’s licence or car insurance renewals because they refused
or neglected to pay bridge tolls.ICBC acts as the enforcement
mechanism and it currently has refuse-to-issue notices on file against 25,000 drivers for failing to pay their Port Mann Bridge
tolls and 17,000 for unpaid tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge.
By comparison, ICBC is also blocking 9,300 parents for failing to make child support payments and 4,100 TransLink fare evaders who haven’t paid their tickets.
The 25,000 drivers barred by ICBC for Port Mann tolls is an all-time high and has been as low as 10,000 at other times, according to the Transportation Investment Corp. that manages the bridge.
Maple Ridge motorcyclist Stacey (Stella) Murdoch argues it’s too heavy handed for ICBC to deny people the ability to drive without any option to gradually repay the debt over time.
“When you do that to somebody you limit what they can do,” she said. “People get into these situations but we have to give them a way to get out.”
Murdoch started the Facebook page “Golden Ears Bridge Toll Nightmares” after her husband was blocked from renewing insurance until he paid $8,000 in bridge tolls, some of which he believed were charged in error.
They rarely cross the bridge now because neither work in Langley any more.
The couple is also selling their Maple Ridge house, after which they’ll pay off the outstanding tolls. Murdoch said she’s surprised by how many other people are in the same plight.
“I bet there are a lot of people out there driving around without driver’s licences.”
She also argues tolls unfairly hit people who live near the two toll bridges and work on the other side of the Fraser River.
“I’m not saying bridges shouldn’t be tolled. But why are people in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows specifically being straddled with this bill?” she asked. “Everybody in the Lower Mainland should be tolled on every single bridge.”
TI Corp. spokesman Greg Johnson insists the system to enforce toll payment is fair.
He said the “vast majority” of Port Mann bridge users pay their tolls on time, many of them by automatic pre-authorized payment through their TReO bridge tolling account.
A Refuse to Issue notice goes to ICBC only if a driver owes more than $25 and is 90 days overdue.
“Drivers receive at least three notifications requesting payment before being designated Refuse to Issue,” he said.
Johnson said 80 to 85 per cent of users pay after being notified and most owe relatively small amounts of less than $100.
Interest charges of 1.5 per cent a month (19 per cent annually) are added to unpaid Port Mann tolls. TransLink adds two per cent interest a month to unpaid Golden Ears Bridge tolls.
While ICBC’s monopoly on mandatory basic insurance makes it an effective stick against B.C. toll evaders, it doesn’t have the same power over out-of-province motorists.
But Johnson said TReO still gets “hundreds of payments” through its website or walk-in centres every month from drivers from elsewhere in Canada or the U.S.
The electronic tolling cameras capture the licence plates of non-B.C. vehicles and invoices are mailed out to those who don’t pay on time.
About $3 million in total Port Mann tolls are currently unpaid – twice as much as in the fall of 2013 – and the 25,000 drivers who owe that are mostly unregistered, meaning they are billed by mail, with an extra $2.30 licence plate processing charge added to each $3 toll.
TransLink officials were unable to comment on Golden Ears Bridge toll enforcement, but said they are having more success in compelling transit fare evaders to pay their fines since the province provided new powers in 2012.

Church sold to developer, plans to build highrise and new church facilityWanda [email protected]
West Burnaby United Church is looking to redevelopment to secure its future.
The church has sold its Metrotown-area property at 6050 Sussex Ave., at Hazel Street, to Townline Homes Inc., said West Burnaby’s minister, Rev. Graham Brownmiller in an interview.
As part of the deal, Townline will build a new church facility for the congregation with the remainder of the proceeds of the sale to be put into an endowment to “fund ministry at the congregation on that site for hopefully a number of years to come.”
The future plans of the church, including the sale of its property, has been in the works for more than two years, said Brownmiller, who took up the West Burnaby post in August.
The B.C. Conference of the
United Church of Canada had been working with the congregation to determine what West Burnaby’s mission in the city of Burnaby is going to look like, he said.
“The current building we have now is over 60 years old and it costs a lot to fix it.”
Just as importantly, the building is not conducive to the kind of work the church does in the community, which includes hosting the food bank and a weekly community lunch.
“For a long time we have set churches to be a place so sacred that no one goes into the sanctuary except during worship time. So in our current building, the sanctuary sits empty five days of the week,” he said.
While much of the church’s space is rented and used by community groups, up to
half of the space available is unusable for such purposes due to the inflexibility of pews bolted in place, for instance.
And while there are people inside the church 10 to 12 hours a day, passersby wouldn’t know it due to its insular design.
“We need to be outwardly focused. We need folks to see that we’re around and doing things and having some relationship with our community that isn’t just about what we do as a church but what the community does.”
The congregation currently sits at about 110 members.
The plan is that Townline will build them a new two-storey, wood-frame facility on the current site of its parking lot, on the Grange Street end of the triangular property.
West Burnaby United seeks redevelopment
Rev. Graham Brownmiller We need folks to see that we’re around and doing things and having some relationship with our community that isn’t just about what we do as a church but what the community does.

Foul play not suspected in man’s death
The body of man found in South Burnaby on Jan. 21 has been identified as a 52-year-old Burnaby man, said Burnaby RCMP. Foul play is not suspected and the death has been ruled accidental. The man’s next of kin have been notified. The body was found in a partially water-filled ditch in the 7600-block of Willard Street, near 14th Avenue.
No further details are being released, Burnaby Mounties say.
It will be flexible and multi-purpose, allowing community use and church services to take place in the same spaces, and much less expensive to maintain. It will be about 12,000 square feet, compared to the current building’s 15,000 square feet, Brownmiller said.
In exchange, Townline will redevelop the rest of the site. The company is seeking a rezoning to allow for a highrise tower with a low-rise component fronting Hazel, the new church facility and underground parking.
The existing church building, constructed in 1948, would have to be demolished. Brownmiller said the church will seek to keep some windows, wrought iron and wood to be repurposed in the new facility.
“A lot of folks in the congregation are ready for this to move forward … There’s a few that are a little bit cautious, they’ve been around the church for quite a long time. This is a big change,” he said. “For a lot of people buildings hold memories. We try to remind people that it’s not about the building, it’s about the community, it’s about what we do as a community.”

A message from the Burnaby Teachers’ Association
Dear parents,We work hard to give your children the best education possible. We celebrate with them when they master a new concept and help them think creatively when tackling a tricky problem. But standardized tests like the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) in Grades 4 and 7 take away from those wonderful moments of learning.
The FSAs do not count for marks, create needless stress for students, are expensive, and the much-delayed results do not actively support your child’s progress. The data is also misused to rank schools, which puts pressure on teachers to teach to the test, instead of to students’ interests and needs. That’s why teachers in Burnaby recommend you send a letter to your school principal requesting that your child be exempted from the FSA.
Exempt your child from the FSA

Roberts sinks big shot for SFU Clan in Alaska
Alisha Roberts of Burnaby hit a key three-pointer as the Simon Fraser University Clan women’s basketball team defeated University of Alaska Nanooks 78-70 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game last Thursday in Fairbanks.
Roberts hit a three-pointer to give the Clan a 56-52 lead with under 13 minutes to play that helped sustain a 12-2 run and give the Clan some second-half breathing room, 61-54. She ended the game with eight points in 24 minutes of floor time.
Two days later, however, she failed to pick up a point in 16 minutes played as the Clan fell 86-66 to the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, ranked third in NCAA Div. II.
The loss left the Clan 6-3 in CNAC play and 10-7 overall. They are on the road again this week for games against Seattle Pacific Falcons on Thursday and Montana State Billings Yellowjackets on
