had a responsibility to fully explore the TransMountain proposal so that we could providethoughtful, objective insight to inform bothour members and our Letter of Commentto the National Energy Board,” said BBOTPresident & CEO Paul Holden.

The BBOT’s review acknowledges theneed for greater access to internationalmarkets for Canadian oil products andsupports responsible resource development,

but also questions the current expansionplans as proposed, citing concerns withrespect to the impact of seismic activity onthe pipeline, as well as the risk to Burnabyas the project terminus – and whetherthe economic benefits outweigh thoseconcerns. The review also cites the lack of acooperative relationship between the projectproponents and key local stakeholders as anarea of concern.

The review addresses a large number ofeconomic considerations that have been hottopics in the pipeline conversation, includingmarket access, job creation, and tax revenues. It balances that discussion with considerationof pipeline safety and routing, shipping safety, spill response, and liability and responsibility.

“In accordance with the BBOT’scommitment to a triple bottom line ofsocial, environmental, and economic

results, we wanted to make sure we tookinto consideration all the factors that mightdetermine whether the project is ultimatelyof net benefit to Burnaby,” said Holden. “TheBoard of Trade and our Board of Directorsare very satisfied that this review is fair, impartial, and most importantly that are ourconclusions are based on the most correctinformation available.”Read the full review at bbot.ca/advocacy.¾

Happy belatedNewYear and earlyLunar NewYear toyou and yours fromthe Burnaby BoardofTrade

Paul Holden, BBOT President & [email protected]

I hope 2014 was as productive of a yearfor your business as it was for us. I am veryproud of what the BBOT has been able toachieve over the past twelve months, andwhile I don’t have the space to go over allthose accomplishments here, I do encourageyou to visit the advocacy and news sectionson bbot.ca to review a few of the moresignificant initiatives we have lead on behalfof businesses in Burnaby, from improving

transit in the Big Bend area to preparinga broad analysis of the proposed TransMountain pipeline expansion project.

I am also very pleased to note that ourBoard of Trade membership is continuingto grow. In fact, this past year we set anorganization record by attracting overone hundred new members in the monthof October alone. This, I believe, is a truetestament to the wonderful businesscommunity we have in this city, made up oforganizations that recognize not only theindividual value of membership, but alsothe importance of supporting the voice ofbusiness in Burnaby.

If your business is not already a memberof the Burnaby Board of Trade, I wouldstrongly encourage you to give us theopportunity to show you how the BBOTcan help strengthen your business. Call604.412.0100 for more information or toregister for one of our regularly scheduledfree Lunch and Learn sessions.

This year in our annual survey, our

membership rated their overall satisfactionwith the BBOT at right around 98%, tyingour best-ever results achieved last year. Iremarked then that continuing to improve onthat number would be a great challenge, andindeed it has been. But truth be told, if wereported any higher of a number, some mightnot even believe us!

In all seriousness though, the membershipsurvey guides us in many of our initiativesand provides us with a clear indication thatwe are doing the right things on behalf ofour business community. Our strength is inour members, and I sincerely thank all thosewho take the time to provide their feedbackso that we might continue to improve andnot only meet but exceed the rightfullylofty expectations that are placed on ourorganization.

If you have any suggestions on how wecan improve our service to you, please let meknow at [email protected]. I wish you all a joyfuland prosperous 2015.¾

Connectingwith electedofficialsat LocalGovernmentReceptionBy Michael [email protected]

The Burnaby Board of Trade has alwaysmade a point of regularly connectingwith elected officials in its ongoing effortto bridge the gap between business andgovernment at all levels. On January 22,as part of its annual Local GovernmentReception, the BBOT once again provided itsmembers with a chance to directly interactwith some of those officials, includingthose they voted into municipal office a fewmonths ago.

In attendance at the event, held at theHilton Vancouver Metrotown, was Burnaby-New West MP Peter Julian, MLAs RajChouhan and Kathy Corrigan, Burnaby MayorDerek Corrigan, the Burnaby City Councillors,

meet the decision makers in this communityis very important to our membership,” saidBBOT President and CEO Paul Holden. “Thisevent gives us the chance to make sure thebusiness community has the most up to dateinformation on the policies and decisions thataffect them.”

In an update from the City of Burnaby,Mayor Corrigan spoke about the role ofthe City and the Board of Trade in bringingbusinesses into Burnaby, citing the examplesof Ritchie Bros Auctioneers, who madeBurnaby their global corporate headquartersyears ago, and Whole Foods, who will bemoving into the Burnaby market for the firsttime later this year.

The mayor also touched on the City’seconomic, social, and environmentalsustainability strategies, its unique workingrelationship with the Burnaby Board ofTrade, and the importance of buying local– businesses supporting each other, andworking towards the same goals and values.

In addition to meeting with electedofficials, the reception also served as anopportunity for the Board of Trade torecognize their extensive list of volunteerswho served the business community in2014 in a variety of BBOT roles rangingfrom committee participation to servingon the Board of Directors. Pthe pledge

PledgeTakerHighlights 2014By Tessa [email protected]

2014 was a fantastic year for the BBOT’ssustainable community. Not only has thenumber of businesses pledging to becomesustainable increased in the last year, but ourpledge takers both large and small continueto improve their environmental foot print.

In 2014, as part of our commitment tohelp our members become more sustainable,we partnered with Vancity to offer ourmembers $1000 bursaries to become ClimateSmart certified. Pledge members False CreekCollision Eco, Reid’s Automotive Recycling,Sorin Group (and the BBOT) took the plungein learning how to measure, manage andreduce their greenhouse gas emissions(energy and waste).

Based on feedback it is clear thatboth waste and energy are areas ofopportunity where businesses continueto seek improvement as they green theiroperations. Pacific Blue Cross (in a daringmove) removed all garbage bins fromworkstations resulting in a 2/3 waste tolandfill reduction. Concord Security (also

Climate Smart alum) installed multi material, recycling and compost bins in their kitchenareas and a small recycling, garbage andcompost bin at each desk. In doing so, theyreduced waste from 936.27 pounds to 117pounds in the last fiscal year. Ricoh Canada,a recognized industry leader in sustainability,is the 2015 national sponsor of the GreatCanadian Shoreline Clean Up. During thelast week of September and the first week ofOctober, 2014 Ricoh Canada had 14 officesand 191 employees in cities across Canadaparticipate in the Great Canadian ShorelineClean Up. The results of the national clean-upwere impressive with employees collectingapproximately 884 pounds of garbage – aweight representing 104 garbage bags and26 recycling bags full of litter.

In the energy category, improvementscontinued to be made with retrofits, purchase of renewable energy, installationof solar panels and LED lighting – HemlockPrinters (Climate Smart alum) replaced plantlighting with LED and is looking for furtheropportunities to reduce GHG emissions. Theyare currently tracking an approximately 20%reduction from their 2007 baseline. DownSyndrome Research Society replaced all theirlights with LED (responsibly disposing of oldlighting) and Grand Villa Casino made itsgreatest impact in energy by implementingretrofits to lower natural gas and electricityconsumption, and by organizing education

campaigns to foster behavior change. RitchieBros. Auctioneers (Climate Smart alum) haspurchased renewable natural gas with theaim to further demonstrate their commitmentto reduce carbon footprint for the comingyear and TELUS installed a 9 kilowatt solarenergy solution at one of their plants in WestEdmonton that should produce nearly 14,000kWh annually and reduce carbon emissionsby 12 tonnes per year. Although this solutionwill provide only about 3 per cent of theoverall energy required for this building, theproject gives them an opportunity to learn ona number of fronts.

Last but not least are those Pledgemembers who in the last year havebeen recognized for their environmentalexcellence; Pacific Blue Cross, GatewayCasino and Alpha Technology wereall winners of the City of Burnaby’sEnvironmental Awards. Shape Properties(Brentwood), Vancity, and Grand Villa Casinowere shortlisted for the EnvironmentalSustainability award, won by SFU (SFUAncillory Services) at the Burnaby BusinessExcellence Awards.

All businesses are welcome to join theBurnaby Board of Trade’s Pledge for aSustainable Community. It’s a free resourcefor businesses to find sustainability tips andinformation and to share their environmentalactions and initiatives. Visit bbotpledge.ca.¾

Oskar Kwieton, Director of Facilities,Operations and Maintenance discussessustainability with the BBOT:

BBOT: When did sustainability become aconsideration for your organization?

Since Shape’s conception in 2005sustainability has been incorporated into itsdevelopments and property operations. In 2011Shape adopted a strategic plan to manage itsenergy, water and waste with reduction targetsfor its developments and property operations.BBOT: How did you choose what you shouldtackle first?

The focus has been on Shape’sdevelopments in conjunction with finding

operations efficiencies to achieve sustainablegoals and reduction targets.BBOT: What are the sustainable initiativesthat your organization has undertakenthat you feel have most impacted yourorganization and why?

Shape strives to create as small anenvironmental footprint as possible. Thesame key factors driving Shape design arealso influencing Shape’s perspective onsustainability and environmental impact:· Efficient land use is one of the mostsignificant initiatives that can be undertaken.Shape is leading the retail industry indeveloping densified urban and suburbanretail projects that function well and providequality of life and experience· Transit hub and pedestrian friendly focuseddesign that encourages green transportationwithin and to Shape’s properties isfundamental to Shape’s environmental plan· Shape strives to implement sustainabledesign and environmental standards

consistent with industry best practicesincluding incorporating Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design (LEED)concepts and practices into projects andBOMA BESt principles and certification intoits property operationsBBOT: Has sustainability had a favourable(or any other kind of impact) on yourorganization ?

Shape’s forward thinking and value basedapproach attracts progressive retailers, afollowing of like-minded partners, andultimately, many loyal customers, who allcollaborate and contribute to Making Placesthat Matter.BBOT: What obstacles or barriers have youencountered and how did you overcomethem (or how are you overcoming them)?

Time and resources can often bestretched when incorporating sustainablepractices into the design of new projects.

TheTruth aboutYourGroup Benefits: HowEmployee GroupInsurance Plans arereally priced…Let’s face it insurance isn’t a favorite dinnertimeconversation at most tables but it is highlyvalued and sought after benefit for many people. We’re talking about Group Benefits. Employeesvalue their health and a dental plan above mostother perks but is it really insurance? Or is it justa company savings account from which to drawfrom when needed?

Employee benefits plans are comprised oftwo categories; Pooled Benefits and ExperienceRated Benefits. The Pooled Benefits compriseof items like your Life Insurance, Long TermDisability, and Out of Country Travel. TheExperience Rated benefits are your Health,Dental, Drugs, Vision and Short Term Disability.

Exposing aHiddenWorkforce: People

Welcomenew members· 2KJAN CONSULTING INC· ALEXANDER COLLEGE· BC WOMEN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION· CHRIS DIKEAKOS ARCHITECTS INC.· COST MASTER COMMUNICATIONS

· ELEMENTAL ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS INC· HPTC CONSULTING INC.· 27INTEGRATED NUTRITION CANADA· MILES EMPLOYMENT GROUP· RUBAMIN LIMITED· STEAMWORKS BREWERY· TERRY BEECH, FEDERAL LIBERAL CANDIDATE,

NORTH BURNABY-SEYMOUR· VANCOUVER AIRPORT AUTHORITY· VANCOUVER GIANTS HOCKEY CLUB

Your Pooled Benefits make up the smallpart of your monthly bill and will cover eventsthat could be catastrophic in nature, such aswhen an employee(s) dies or becomes disabled.

Your Experience Rated benefits make upthe larger part of your monthly bill and coverthose events that are more repetitive andpredictable. For example, employees generallygo to the dentist 6 months for a check up andwill renew their prescriptions every 90 days.

Unknown to most, Insurers look at thesetwo categories differently. For pooled benefits

–the insurer ‘pools’ all their clients experiencetogether to determine how much money theywill need to pay all their life claims, LTD claimsand other pooled benefits.

When pricing your Experience Ratedbenefits, the insurer only looks at yourcompany’s experience to calculate your price. In simple terms, after adding up all premiumsand subtracting all your claims, the insurerassesses whether you left them enough tocover their profits and expenses. If you did not,the insurers’ view this deficit as if they just lent

you money. Essentially they will put you on apayment plan over the next year in the form ofhigher premiums to cover your ‘debts.’

When you are a small business, all it cantake is one family using all of their annualdental allowance to increase the premiums forthe entire group at renewal.

The Chamber Plan is a unique programoffered to the Burnaby Board of Trademembers that can put stability in yourEmployee Benefit Premiums. Whether yourhave 1 employee or 50, the Chamber Planpools your firm together with 25,000 otherBoards and Trade and Chambers of Commercemembers across Canada. Under this kind ofstructure, your employees can use their planhowever they want- without worry about yourcompany being singled out at renewal time.

withDisabilitiesThis past October, 30 employers, 7 serviceproviders, and 514 people with disabilitiesconverged on the Firefighters Banquet &Conference Centre at Metrotown for the NeilSquire Society’s 2014 Job Fair for Peoplewith Disabilities. It was the largest eventof its kind ever held in the Lower Mainlandand its success took even the veteran hostorganization by surprise. The Society expectedhalf the number of attendees but quicklyfound their venue at capacity and in needof crowd-control measures. The resoundingsuccess of the job fair shines a spotlight onthe overwhelming need for jobs for peoplewith disabilities—and the readiness of a largelyuntapped labour resource.

High-profile exhibitors includedApple Inc., Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the RCMP, UBC, RBC, Vancity, and ShawCommunications, among many others. Asurvey revealed that 88% of the participatingcompanies were actively interested in hiringpeople with disabilities. The employers foundthat the majority of attendees were highlypresentable, focused, and knew how topresent their skill sets professionally. The jobfair opened up their perspective on people

with disabilities, revealing that they are aqualified, educated, and motivated workforce.

In many cases, there are no additionalcosts associated with hiring someone with adisability, and there are benefits—companiesare starting to catch on. A business thatemploys people with disabilities canexperience reduced staff turnover andenhanced positive image. A businessinclusive of people with disabilities on itsteams demonstrates that diversity is valuedthrough action.

Since the job fair, Apple Inc. has initiatedthe hiring of approximately 28 potential newemployees into their team. The Public ServiceCommission has short-listed 10 candidatesas potential new employees. The City ofVancouver and Rocky Mountaineer have plans

to start their short-listing process towardhiring people that attended the fair. BMOhas short-listed 22 candidates, with 8 in theinterviewing phase. HSBC has indicated thatthey are in the final stages of hiring 20 peoplefor different positions in locations around thelower mainland, and have forwarded still moreresumes to Toronto for short-listing.

Based on the success of the first job fair, the Neil Squire Society is positioning nextyear’s event to unite even more businesseswith potential candidates in people withdisabilities.

Gary Birch, the Executive Director ofthe Neil Squire Society, was interviewed atthe job fair for a Burnaby NOW Profile ofExcellence video. View the video on NeilSquire’s YouTube channel.¾
