Practice medication safety... especially around childrenA cancer diagnosis is seldom easy for the person receiving the news or his or her loved ones. Cancer treatment often involves weeks of intensive medical therapy that can include radiation, chemotherapy and oral medications.
In the wrong hands, the same drugs can prove poisonous, especially to young children.
Childproof bottles are seldom enough. Very often adults forget to close the lids properly. Tenacious children can sometimes figure out how to get lids off of
bottles even if they are touted as childproof.
Cancer patients taking medication might want to employ some additional safety measures in order to protect young children.
• Do not advertise medication use to your children. Take pills away from curious eyes so that youngsters are not tempted to try Mom or Dad’s medicine, which for all intents and purposes, looks like candy to a child.
• Store medications high up, ideally in a
locked cabinet. Remain careful when returning pill containers to these locked cabinets after use.
• Use individual-dose cases, many of which can be locked with a key or a combination code. This can protect against spills should the case fall on the floor.
• Ask for medications to be prescribed in blister packs that are more difficult to open.
• Dispose of any expired medication or pills you no longer need so there are no extras lying around the house.
• Dispose of pills in an outside garbage receptacle so that children or pets cannot find them and swallow them.
• Never store pills in a container other than the prescription container or a medication dispenser.
When cancer treatment necessitates the taking of additional medications, it becomes even more important to protect children from accidental — and sometimes intentional — ingestion of medications.

Becoming a bone marrow donorBone marrow is a bodily tissue instrumental to human health. Bone marrow produces all three types of blood cells, in addition to stem cells and immune-system supporting lymphocytes. Bone marrow transplants are often an option to treat various cancers and immune system disorders.
Stem cells can save lives Stem cells are immature cells that lie in waiting in bone marrow. The stem cells wait until weak, unhealthy or damaged cells need to be replaced. Stem cells then become specialized, turning into the cells needed. They can transform
into red or white blood cells or even platelets and lymphocytes. For this reason, stem cells have long been studied and used in various therapies. They can be harvested for certain cancer treatments and for ongoing medical research into other potential uses.
Stem cells are harvested for bone marrow transplants. Donations of stem cells can be used to treat a number of often incurable diseases that affect the healthy function of bone marrow in patients. The Bone Marrow Foundation says approximately 50,000 blood and marrow transplants are
performed worldwide to treat more than 70 types of illnesses, including some that affect children. These diseases include leukemia, lymphoma cancers and Hodgkin’s Disease, among others. In certain instances, a bone marrow transplant may be the only life-saving procedure available.

who is in Seton Villa and relies on the
shuttles, and was sharing her frustration
over it,” she said. “She literally just looked
at me and said, ‘I don’t know what I’m
going to do.’”
Seton Villa, at 3755 McGill St., is a non-
profit housing complex for seniors. It has its
own shuttle, Dueck explained, but it only
runs once a week and many residents use
the local community shuttles on a day-to-
day basis.
TransLink is considering combining and
changing its community shuttle routes and
extending service along Hastings Street east
to Kensington Square.
Weekday service along the new route
would decrease from every 30 minutes to
every 60 minutes.
Route C1 currently travels between the
Kootenay Loop and the intersection of
Hastings Street and Gilmore Avenue, and
route C2 travels in the Capitol Hill area
to the intersection of Hastings Street and
Gilmore Avenue. The new route would no
longer go up Capitol Hill.
Dueck said the changes could adversely
affect a particularly vulnerable group of
area residents: seniors.
Customers are often in need of immedi-
ate help, she noted, as they’ve recently bro-
ken their glasses and have difficulty coping
without them.
“It’s almost to the point of, ‘I need to
get this fixed now,’” Dueck said. “Just
trying to navigate a hallway could be dif-
ficult, depending on the type of vision you

tutoring program for people with
disabilities. Burnaby’s Neil Squire
Society has launched a campaign to
raise money for Distance Computer
Comfort, a program that provides
free computer tutoring to people
with disabilities all over Canada.
Participants visit online class-
rooms to learn basic computer skills
with a tutor who helps the students
achieve their learning goals.

director of development, said they
received federal government fund-

Preparing for hospice careSometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible.
If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual.
• Visit various medical care centers to see if away-from-home options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what
type of hospice care you prefer. This may include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home.
• Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated.
• Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to
be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others.
• Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. The vast majority of travelers live in fear of contracting traveler’s diarrhea, so here are suggestions for avoiding this extremely unpleasant occurrence.
• Start taking probiotics at least a week before you leave for vacation, and continue to take them throughout your trip. By starting before your trip, you are preparing your digestive system to increase its resistance to foreign bacteria.
• Only drink beverages from sealed bottles. If it is not possible to do this, it is important to boil water before drinking it, or drink hot tea and coffee. Also, don’t forget to boil water to be used for brushing your teeth.
• Do not put ice cubes in your drink.
• Only eat fruits that have been peeled.
• Only eat vegetables that have been cooked and are still hot. Stay away from raw vegetables and salads.
• Do not eat raw or undercooked meats, seafood, or fish.
• Avoid non-pasteurized dairy products.
• Do not buy food or beverages on the street.
• Wash your hands thoroughly before eating. Antiseptic gels are possible alternatives.

Getting braces is a rite of passage for many children. When braces are in place, it helps to know the do’s and don’ts of maintaining braces, including which foods can be comfortably eaten and which should be avoided.
Hard foods, such as nuts, ice cubes, apples, and crunchy crusts, can damage the fragile components of the braces. Sticky foods, such as caramel, gummy candies, gum, and taffy, can pull apart braces or get wrapped around the hardware, making for a difficult time cleaning the teeth. Similarly, sweet foods, including some fruits that are high in sugar, can feed bacteria on the teeth. Braces make it more difficult to clean the teeth effectively, so consuming excessive amounts of sugar may result in decay.
Small foods also can become lodged in between brackets and wires. When such foods are not removed, they can promote bacteria growth and cavities.
When eating, cut foods into bite-sized pieces to avoid having to bite down into them. Many foods, such as chicken wings, ribs or corn on the cob, can be enjoyed by those wearing braces so long as
they are eaten with a fork. Apples also can be sliced and eaten.
Here are the foods that you may want to avoid for the duration of your time wearing braces:• Hard pizza crust• Popcorn• Bagels• Hard candies• Chips and other crunchy snacks
• Peanut brittle• Nuts• Raw carrots• Pretzels• Candy• Gum• Beef jerky• Hard tacos• Soda and sugary soft drinks
Some people wear braces for a few months, while others must wear them for a few years. Keeping teeth clean and avoiding problem foods promotes dental health and makes maintenance less difficult.
