Q: Tell us a bit about yourself. A: I was born and raised in Burnaby, and in fact I now own the house I was born in (Parkcrest area). My father, wife and I bought it from my grandmother’s estate about 10 years ago. I’ve been a certifi ed kitchen and bathroom designer for almost 20 years, and work for Paradigm Kitchen Design in Vancouver. My blog, Useful Spaces, is primarily about my experiences in that industry. I used to write another blog called I Could Eat about cooking and my love for food, but I combined it with Useful Spaces this year. The two subjects seem to coexist quite nicely and they keep things from getting dull. What I like best about writing Useful Spaces is the feedback I get from readers from around the world. Issues we have in Canada with building codes for example can be completely unknown to someone in South Africa. Similarly, I get suggestions from other designers that I’d never have received if not for the blog.Q: How has Burnaby and your Parkcrest neighbourhood changed since you lived there as a boy?A: My neighbourhood is relatively unchanged from when I was a boy. In fact the house beside us was only recently knocked down in favour of a new house. Burnaby on the other hand has changed quite a bit. For me

the biggest changes are Metrotown (I still refer to the area as “Where Kelly-Douglas was”), the addition of the SkyTrain, and the developments where Oakalla Prison was. I also like how the arts centre at Deer Lake has developed, especially the concert venue! The VSO concert is an annual event for my wife and I, and we’ve been to many of the concerts and festivals held there.Q: What do you like most about your neighbourhood?Parkcrest is still fi lled with lots of parks and tree-lined streets. There are many residents that have been here since the 1950s. Q: What do you like most about living in Burnaby?A: Burnaby is in the center of it all. Q: Where in Burnaby do you like to have a meal?A: Fancy dinner: The Pear Tree. Pizza and a bottle of wine: Anducci’s Cuccina. Nice bowl of soup: Triple Coconut Tree Pho on Hastings. Casual lunch: Chez Meme. General shopping: Cioffi ’s is the best anywhere in Metro Vancouver. Q: Is there anything or anyplace in the city that inspires you?A: I love going up to the top of Burnaby Mountain at night and watching the city lights.

Q: What’s special to you about Burnaby?A: Burnaby’s offi cial motto is “By River and Sea Rise Burnaby.” I fi nd that a great description of the city’s two “coasts” and its commitment to green space. When my wife and I moved here 12 years ago, we fell in love with the big parks, the hidden ravines, the lakes, and the shorelines. We are so fortunate to live in a city that years ago decided to keep streams and ravines in a natural state. We have many salmon-bearing creeks in Burnaby, whereas our less fortunate neighbours in Vancouver have gone from over 60 active salmon streams to less than a handful today.Q: When you describe Burnaby to other people, what do you say?A: I tell them it’s a great place to live. We’ve put most of the offi ce towers and congestion into our suburb of Vancouver to the west, and put our noisy international airport into our suburb of Richmond to the southwest. Burnaby is central to everything. We can SkyTrain to downtown Vancouver in 30 minutes, to downtown New Westminster in 15 minutes, to Surrey in 20-30 minutes... And the ever-increasing bicycle paths and lanes are also great to explore.Q: Where do you go to show off the best of the city to visitors?A: Well of course since I’m a volunteer streamkeeper Byrne Creek Ravine Park is near and dear to my heart. Folks are amazed to know that we have salmon spawning right in our city! I also enjoy taking visitors around Deer Lake with its magnifi cent vistas and old mansions, and up Burnaby Mountain to see Kamui Mintara, the Ainu “Playground of the Gods” and the awesome ecosculpture Tancho cranes and Stream of Dreams crane mural honouring our sister city of Kushiro, Japan.

Q: The city is known for its parks and greenery and you’re on the front line trying to preserve the natural aspects of the city; why is that important?A: I can think of several reasons why green space, and more importantly, urban biodiversity, are crucial. Forests are the lungs of our planet. Living next to a ravine or forested park is literally refreshing. It also keeps us at least partially connected to nature. To know there are salmon, trout, coyotes, mink, racoons, skunks, eagles, hawks, owls, newts, garter snakes, frogs, turtles, and so much more, just outside my back gate, is astounding. I feel alive and connected to the Earth when I know nature is alive and thriving in my neighbourhood. I can also step out my back gate and do a 45-minute hike along a gorgeous creek in a lush ravine.
