PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION Bytheearly1970s,manyfirstgenerationdieselswerereachingtheendoftheirservicelives.ThemostcommonreplacementlocomotivebecametheGP38-2.EMDbeganproductionofthe16-cylinder,non-turbocharged,2000horsepowerlocomotivein1972.UnliketheGP38’sprimemover,whichdroveageneratortosupplypowertothetractionmotors,theGP38-2sprimemoverdroveanalternatorwhichproducedACelectricalcurrentthatwasrectifiedtoDCtopowerthefourtractionmotors.AnothermajorchangefortheGP38-2wastheintroductionofthe“Dash2”modularelectricalcabinet.Formorethan40years,theGP38-2hasworkedmainlinefreights,locals,switchingjobs,yardservice,helpers,snowfightingtrains,andhumppower.Manyremaininservicetoday.
