New jobs tend to be ei ther for affluent professionals ( theminor i ty ) or for re la t ive ly poor re ta i l and serv ice workers ( themajor i ty ) . The t rend is toward a c lear ly d iv ided work ingpopu la t ion : a re la t i ve few we l l -pa id h igh- tech p ro fess iona ls a tone pole and a majority of low-wage retail and service workers at

M o s t B u r l i n g t o n r e s i d e n t s l i v e i n r e n t e d a p a r t m e n t s o rh o u s e s . M o s t c a n n o t a f f o r d t o b u y t h e c i t y ' s h o u s e s w h i c h a r er e s e r v e d f o r r e l a t i v e l y a f fl u e n t p r o f e s s i o n a l s . I n r e t a i l i n g ,for example, of the 20% heads of households who rent, 69% cannotafford the median rent of a two bedroom apartment and 92% cannotafford to buy a house. And amidst the affluence of the boomingeconomy, Burlington area families made over 11,000 trips to theEmergency Food Shelf in 1988.
