Burke Marine began life as a tiny sail loft on Sydney’s North Shore, started by Martin and Shari Burke back in the early 70s. A keen sailor, Martin had spent most of his childhood building boats, racing boats and thinking up ways to work with boats. By the age of 17 an apprenticeship in sail making secured his fate. Working with Joe Pierce at Hood Sails and later Bob Miller and Craig Whitworth at Miller & Whitworth, Martin learnt from the industry’s best.

By the 1980s Martin had a string of championship wins and a solid reputation as a world leader in sail design under his belt, and so started casting around for a new challenge. “I was doing my sixth Sydney to Hobart on board Too Impetuous in the ‘80s,” says Martin. “It was miserable. We were all freezing cold and wet in these clunky suits that you couldn’t move in and I just thought there had to be a better way.”

On his return, Martin began designing a set of offshore gear that would keep him and the crew dry, warm and comfortable. The gear - made in the signature Burke royal blue - was met by a huge roar of approval and Burke’s famous offshore gear went into production.

Today Martin is still the principle designer of all Burke products. With a range of PFDs, wet weather gear, footwear and marine accessories, Burke has a well earned reputation as Australia’s best loved marine clothing brand. “Our range has grown with our business,” says Martin Burke. “We now have customers who grew up wearing Burke coming in and buying their own kids their irst Burke Marine outits. That’s as good as it gets in my book.”
