Dear Friends My September Ramble The name September comes from the old Roman word lsquoseptemrsquo which

means seven because in the Roman Julian calendar it was the seventh

month This calendar was fractionally too long as it was based on the solar

year In 1753 Britain decided to correct this in favour of the Gregorian

calendar which corresponds closely with the astronomical year by having a

leap year every 4 years In doing so 3rd September instantly became 14th

September As many people believed their lives would be shortened they

protested in the streets demanding lsquoGIVE US BACK OUR 11 DAYSrsquo

September is a time for new beginnings in lots of ways We go back

to work again hopefully refreshed after a summer break and the children

and young people are going back to school and college Some are just start-

ing school while others are going on to senior school or off to university

September is also a time for endings and traditionally Michaelmas Day on

29th September was the last day of the harvest season

There are many customs and traditions around harvest which go back

over the centuries The charming corn dollies were made by people who

believed that the corn goddess lived in the corn and would die when the

corn was harvested unless some of it was saved As the last of the crops

were gathered in there used to be a tradition of making lsquocorn dolliesrsquo A

corn dolly was supposed to have been the spirit of the corn goddess So to

make sure the corn goddess stayed alive until next springrsquos sowing a corn

dolly was made from the last sheaf of corn for her to rest in

Then traditionally on the day after Michaelmas every year

agricultural labourers presented themselves in their finest clothing along

with their tools at the nearest market town There they offered themselves

for hire for the coming year A fair followed the hirings and this was called

lsquoMop Fairrsquo Large numbers of people worked on the land at that time

Of course modern farming today is a high tech science and employs

far fewer people with machinery having taken their place but one tradition

has continued over the centuries In Britain we give thanks for the harvests

at the end of the season At harvest festival near Michaelmas Day we

celebrate the food grown on our land In the schools and churches food is

taken to the Harvest Festival services It is a time to give thanks for Godrsquos

abundant gifts to us and to share all this with others who are not so

fortunate So after the service all the food is distributed to people in need

OUR PASTORAL TEAM We currently have a small team (4 people) who visit some of the 121

residents in Winchester House Care Home in Wouldham on behalf of the

church and hold a monthly service We would like to find a few more

volunteers to help either with the service andor with regular say once a

month visiting of people who are particularly in need of visits There

would be induction and ongoing support It would also be necessary to

complete a Winchester House Volunteer form and undergo a disclosure

and barring check

If you might be interested please speak to Gwen on 672060 or

Mike on 07964 697556 for more information

Wouldham Churchyard Working Party

Calling all volunteers who would like to help keep the

churchyard at Wouldham tidy We are having a working

party on Saturday 21st September from 830-1130

mainly to clear some of the ivy on walls and some of the

tombstones also to remove some encroaching elder and

sycamore and to clear soil from mole activity We could do with ideally

about 10 people We have some tools but if you have some gloves that

would be good Please wear suitable shoes for the uneven ground surface

Training and safety advice will be offered It would be helpful if you

could let us know if you are planning to come by phoning Mike on 07964

697556 or Dennis on 672060 Tea and coffee will be provided and you

can choose more or less energetic jobs

All are welcome More fun than going to the gym

THIS MONTHrsquoS CHARITY

The proceeds from the Country Lunches Afternoon Teas and Book Exchanges in July

have been sent to Smile Train which is a charity providing surgery for children in

poor countries who are born with cleft palates and harelips Margaret Mather donated

pound75 from her recent Cream Tea and together with proceeds from our activities a

cheque for pound180 has been sent This will provide money for one child to have surgery

and also provide some after ndash care

The chosen charity for September is Emmaus a local branch of a national charity

based in Rochester Amongst other activities they collect old furniture and employ

unemployed people to renovate this

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

We hope you have all been enjoying the lovely summer and getting out

and about The Parish Council did not have a meeting in August but has

still been busy We have been liaising with KCC to ensure that

Wouldhamrsquos vegetation issues are sorted out although we are all working

with tighter budgets this year You can inform

KCC direct regarding any highways vegetation

issues that you have on 0300 333 5539 and Kent

Public Rights of Way on 0845 345 0210 for any

footpath issues You are of course still welcome

to inform the Parish Council too For those of

you who donrsquot know the Parish Council is

responsible for maintaining the Recreation

Ground and the Car Park Wouldham Common

and the Village Hall

Work has been carried out at Wouldham Common to tidy up the area

The Parish Council has once again made use of the free Community Pay-

back Scheme to work here along with contractors to cut back and open up

the area The views of Wouldham Village and the surrounding area are

fantastic It really is worth the walk up the hill

The Parish Council was unsuccessful in its recent grant application to the

Lottery Grant Funding for a new village hall but we are still pressing on

here with looking into other grants that might be available to us One of

our Councillors is now on the case

The Parish Council said to goodbye to Cllr Kate Craib as she resigned in

July The Council would like to thank Kate for her input over the last 2

years

Finally the refurbishment of the recycling area should take place shortly

by Tonbridge amp Malling BC This should help to smarten up the area and

make it easier to drop off your recycling if in a car

The next Parish Council meeting is on 3rd September 2013 in the

Village Hall Everyone is welcome to attend

Further funding has been secured from ldquoCommunity Spacesrdquo who

funded the skate ramp to ldquoCelebrate your spacerdquo A Free BBQ and

fun day has been arranged for Sat 7 September on the recreation

ground from 1100am (see poster on page 5) Donrsquotrsquo forget to recycle all your cardboard and paper in the large

recycling bank at the village hall site We do as reported on many

occasions receive funds from both Smurfitts recycling and KCC so by

recycling you are generating funds

As some of you are aware The Parish Council wrote to PS Homes

(Developers of 25 amp 27 Bell Lane) advising them on how pleased we

were on the finished development PS Homes responded ldquoWe would like

to take this opportunity to thanking you for the very kind comments that

Recently there have been incidents of fly-tipping If you see any fly-

tipping you can either report it direct to TMBC or give me a call

and I will report it for you

have been doing in Burham and Wouldham during the last few months and offer

appropriate security advice

The police havenrsquot had many crimes reported in your area over the past couple of

months which is good news You can check out exactly what has been reported on

youths have been congregating in large groups which can be intimidating to other

residents I believe this is because of the school holidays

During the summer holidays parents have expressed their concerns regarding their

children using the internet Make sure you know how to protect personal data and

keep yourself your friends and your family safe online

Make sure your child

bull understands that some people they meet online may not be who they say they are

bull does not use private chat rooms unless you are present

bull knows never to meet up with someone they have met online without your

knowledge or permission

bull considers carefully before posting any pictures or videos of themselves online

bull knows not to open files sent from people they do not know or respond to

messages that are sexually suggestive obscene provocative or threatening bull knows to talk to you a teacher or a trusted adult if they feel uncomfortable or

worried How to report a problem online

bull If you see inappropriate images or behaviour on a website or social networking

site report it directly to the site where they appear

bull If the content relates to a crime committed in the UK report it to the police on
