President’s Message Colombo Club Auxiliary

President’s MessageThe joint Pizza Night on June 14, was a great success.

Everyone had a great time, especially the children. The

root beer floats for dessert were a favorite.

This new year has flown by so fast, it is hard to realize half the year is gone. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank the Board and Officers for all they do to help make the Auxiliary continue to thrive -- plus to all members who attend our meetings every month,

and those who chaired and co-chaired one of our dinner events. You are all so appreciated.

Congratulations to all our members who had high school

and college graduates. May they fly with confidence for their next journey.

Summer has arrived with some unusual hot days and of course, the rain as well. For those who will be traveling

on trips this summer, may you have safe travels and enjoy your vacation time.

Looking ahead, the Auxiliary will be on vacation for the month of July. However, we are already working on our Bingo Social on Sunday afternoon August 25 at 3 pm. Be sure and save the date. Join us to play Bingo and enjoy snacks and a delicious dessert. The cost is $15 per person, which includes a free Bingo card. Make your reservation for our Bingo Social by calling Yvonne (510) 531-2429.

September 19th brings us to our Back to School Dinner. This dinner is chaired by Jean Inferrrera. This is great time to celebrate the end of summer. More information to follow.

Remember the Auxiliary is on a summer break for the month of July. There will be no meeting.

I look forward to seeing you on August 21, at our general meeting in the Isabella Room.

May Summer bring you blessings and happiness.

Best wishes,Yvonne Guidi-Evans, Auxiliary President

July is a special month for me. My mom, my granddaughter and I all celebrate our birthdays in July. My little granddaughter did not want to share the month with my mom or me. I guess she is already getting into the Independence Day spirit. That independence is something that we should not take for granted. July 4th is a day to celebrate, but we should always remember our families coming over from the old country and celebrating their independence in the new world. We owe them a debt of gratitude for taking the challenge and offering us such a great opportunity to live where we do. Truly a Blessing.

Dobbiamo dire grazie per tutto ciò che è ancora con noi, e per coloro che si trovano in un posto migliore per raccogliere la sfida e offrirci una così grande opportunità di vivere dove facciamo. Davvero una benedizione.

We should also be thankful for the work of our past presidents. Like my dad, these men worked to preserve the values of Italian culture and life style. Club presidents have represented the Club since it was founded in Oakland 1920. We honor the living past presidents this month at our family dinner on July 27. Members receive one ticket complimentary; Guests $22. Respecting the individuals that have represented the Club for you is your duty as a member. Rispettare le persone che hanno rappresentato il Club per te è un tuo dovere come membro.

The Colombo Club is getting ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. First we need to have fun next month at our 99th anniversary. It will be a great formal event. Get your tickets now for this year’s dinner on August 17.

Cicero wrote, “What is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history.” Cent Anni, the book recounting the 100-year history of the Colombo Club, is almost complete. If you would like to help sponsor this endeavor, please see the flyer in this newsletter. We could use your donation to help us get this book published.

Take the time to visit your Club, and see the hard work that goes into preparing for all the events. It’s amazing when you think about the number of people we feed with some of the finest Italian food. Food is always a large part of what makes our Italian culture so distinctive. With the number of high profile events at the Club in July and August, we are so fortunate to have several head cooks who prepare wonderful Italian cuisine for us. I would like to say “Mille Grazzie” to our cooks: John Tandi, Ben Ratto, Joe Guerrero, Rick Caula, Mike Morley, Tony Tedeschi, Ed Ciminello, Bill Cendak, Danny Foster, and Jerry Pittore, for getting up early in the morning and spending the entire day preparing dinners for us.

As a reminder this month’s birthday dinners are for the entire family. The menu features Italian pot roast. Make it a family night out at the Club.

I wish you a great 4th of July, and I hope you have a wonderful time with your family #familyfirst. Ti auguro un buon 4 luglio e spero che ti diverta con la tua famiglia #familyfirst.

Ciao Per Ora Ci Vediamo Al Club (bye for now see you at the Club)

Family Nights at the Birthday Dinners in

July & August! I Classici Italiani!

As most all of you know, the Family Dinner at our Club has been a recurring event for years, usually on the last Saturday of each month. It is the only principally member-attended event and personifies what our founders envisioned for our Club. They were originally planned as a Club event

in the tradition of the weekly Sunday dinner that many of us grew up with.

You may remember funny or silly experiences like the following family dinner spoof from an article of mine several years ago: Sunday dinner was at 1:00. The meal went like this.

Table is set with everyday dishes…

doesn’t matter if they don’t match…they’re clean, what more do you want?

All the utensils go on the right side of the plate and the napkin goes on the left. Put a clean kitchen towel at Nonno and Papa’s plate because they won’t use napkins.

Homemade wine and bottles of 7Up are on the table.

First course, Antipasto. Change plates. Next, macaroni (Nonna called all

spaghetti Macaroni). Change plates.

After that, roasted meats, roasted potatoes, over-cooked vegetables.Change plates. THEN and only THEN (never at the beginning of the meal!) would you eat the salad (homemade oil & vinegar dressing only). Change plates. Next, fruit & nuts – in the shell (on paper plates because you ran out of the other ones). Coffee with anisette (espresso for Nonno, “Merican” coffee for the rest) with hard cookies (biscotti) to dip in the coffee.

The kids go play…the men go to lie down. They slept so soundly you could

perform brain surgery on them without anesthesia; the women then clean the kitchen.

Getting screamed at by Mom or Nonna

half in English and half in Italian. Italian mothers never threw a baseball in their life, but can nail you in the head with a shoe thrown from the kitchen while you’re in the living room!

I hope this made you laugh and brought back a funny memory or two! Maybe times have changed and the setting a bit

different in our Club dining room but how about bringing some of this flavor to our Birthday dinners?

Well, given it is summer time and many

of our Club families are more available (if not on vacation!), the spirit of those family dinners will occur at our monthly Birthday dinners. Yes, that means families are welcome at the Birthday dinners in July and August. After fun, successful Father-Son Sports nights during this past June, July offers a great opportunity for all in the family to join. In August, Fathers and Daughters will be the highlight & theme. Make your reservation today! Sempre avanti, con vostra famiglia al Club!
