n Industrial design professor turned entrepreneur, Junjie zhang, explains the inspiration behind sozen from the time he took students to the oldest bamboo villages in shenzhou. “these were some of the wealthiest rural villages in the 70s and 80s, with master arts craftsmen that had been commissioned by deng xiaop-ing and other high-ranking officials. but in the 90s, times changed. When my students and I went, we found most of the craftsmen were over 60, the masters were in their 70s and 80s. they had very few orders, just woven baskets for some european clients, bamboo figures for tourist shops. I had such a feeling of loss for these valued artisan skills of the past. We founded sozeN to find a way to integrate traditional crafts with modern design.”
