BunburyBunbury is a city focused on a future of exciting growth and development but with a strong sense of its historic and cultural roots. Bunbury’s unique waterfront location was crucial to its development after settlement in 1829 when the city began to expand around its port.

Today, a backdrop of picturesque water views from every angle remains central to Bunbury’s continued development as the port, harbour, estuary, inlet and beaches are embraced as important elements of its cultural identity. While the heart of Bunbury is now a vibrant cosmopolitan city, there are quaint reminders of

its history everywhere, and together they form a memorable collection of sites and activities.Bunbury’s iconic black and white lighthouse is situated at the northern end of the city and is built on an outcrop of ancient solid basalt rock known as Wyalup-Rocky Point. This working lighthouse is one of Bunbury’s most loved icons and is well worth a visit during your stay in the region.King Cottage Museum offers a glimpse into the past with a home built in 1880 while Bunbury’s St Mark’s Church, a gorgeous timber construction, was built in 1842 and is the second oldest church in Western Australia. With an enormous population of ducks and birds, and its shady grounds, it is a beautiful spot to picnic. There’s plenty more things to see and do in the Bunbury region.

For more information on the Bunbury region, please visit www.visitbunbury.com.au. Alternatively, drop into the Bunbury Visitor Centre at Carmody Place, Bunbury.

BUNBYBUNBURYSee and Do

Bunbury is the spectacular result of a bit of this and a bit of that, whipped up to provide visitors with an unforgettable treat. It’s hard to believe that this vibrant cosmopolitan hub of business, industry, culture and shopping is also home to some of the most unforgettable natural experiences you could imagine.

DOLPHINSLike the charming waiter ready to take your order at one of Bunbury’s award-winning restaurants, the city’s resident population of bottlenose dolphins are eager to make your acquaintance. The dolphins reside in Bunbury’s Koombana Bay and are commonly spotted by excited onlookers along the coast, in the estuary or the inlet.

DOLPHIN DISCOVERY CENTRE The Dolphin Discovery Centre offers visitors the opportunity to get up close to these playful and majestic creatures. Peruse the Interpretive Centre and Theatre or observe the dolphins more closely in the Interactive Zone. For an experience of lifetime, you can also book a Dolphin Swim Encounter or take an exciting ride on a Dolphin Eco Tour. The centre is open daily, except for Christmas Day.

THREE WATERS Bunbury is often called the City of Three Waters given its sublime location surrounded on three sides by water. As well as being home to the bottlenose dolphins, Koombana Bay offers safe family swimming. The renowned Back Beach is a holiday hub offering swimming, surfing, walking and dining, while the Leschenault Inlet and Estuary also offer a picturesque backdrop for picnics, walks and aquatic activities.

WYALUP-ROCKY POINT – BASALT ROCKBunbury’s white mangrove population is not the city’s only prehistoric remnant. The extensive Basalt Rock formations at Wyalup-Rocky Point were deposited thousands of years ago by flowing lava and now create a distinct and eye-catching feature on the Back Beach.

BIG SWAMP RESERVEMake the most of the walking trails and viewing platforms at Big Swamp Reserve on foot or bicycle. The reserve offers the best vantage points to view and interact with a diverse range of wetland flora and fauna, including more than 30 species of birds. Look closely for western long necked turtles, which have adopted the area as a favoured habitat.

MAIDENS RESERVEExplore a network of walking trails leading through the dune systems of the Maidens Reserve to a stunning ocean lookout. The inclusion of a well-equipped barbecue and play area makes the reserve a family favourite.

TUART FOREST Just another jewel in Bunbury’s natural crown. Tuart Forest is one of the last remaining forests of Tuart trees in the country and, apart from the picturesque scenery it provides, the forest is home to a variety of local wildlife including kangaroos, bandicoots and ringtail possums.

LOOKOUTSMarlston Hill Lookout is the site of the original lighthouse and was used in earlier times as a vantage point for whale watching. The lookout offers 360 degree views over the marina, Darling Scarp, Koombana Bay, the city and south to Cape Naturaliste. Boulters Heights Lookout offers views across the city and Leschenault Inlet to Koombana Bay.Maidens Reserve Lookout captures a stunning ocean panorama.

BUNBURYBUNBU

LENA DIVE WRECKApprehended by the Australian Navy in February 2002 for the illegal fishing of Patagonian toothfish in Australian waters, the Lena was sunk three nautical miles off Bunbury a year later to use as a dive wreck. The sunken ship is now home to a fascinating variety of underwater inhabitants and is suitable for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.

FISHING AND CRABBINGWhether you have a boat or just a well-used handline, ask around for the inside word on Bunbury’s best spots for catching a sumptuous feed of fresh fish or the local delicacy, blue manna crab. Five minutes north of Bunbury you will find the Leschenault Estuary, one of the area’s favourite crabbing spots. Hopefuls of all ages, silhouetted by a summer sunset with dab net in hand, are a familiar site from the adjacent Old Coast Road, as they wade knee deep in the Estuary’s sheltered waters. For fishing there is a good choice of beach, rock or jetty spots.

GOLF If you like to combine gentle exercise with your Bunbury sight seeing, try one of the three picturesque local golf courses. Kangaroos and birdlife roam the fairways offering numerous opportunities for photos along the way.

SHOPPINGWith major shopping centres, numerous department stores, an ever-growing home maker precinct plus unique stores and boutiques, Bunbury is the South West region’s shopping capital. Hit the CBD where specialty boutiques and attractive shop fronts combine with alfresco dining. Go for convenience at the big shopping centres or a more relaxed pace at the Marlston Waterfront.

THE WINECollectively known as the Geographe Wine Region, the four distinct wine producing districts of Harvey, Ferguson Valley, Donnybrook and Capel form a scintillating smorgasbord of variety and style to dazzle the senses.Bounded by the curve of the land on Geographe Bay, it is the gentle touch of cooling afternoon sea breezes that draws together the wine region’s unique and individual soil types to form something special – something distinctly Geographe.Stars of the Geographe Wine Region include excellent Shiraz, fine Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and emerging favourites that include alternative varieties such as Tempranillo and Nebbiolo.
