DEAR PAW’S CORNER:In a list of “responsible”things one should do to their pets, you wrote that owners should spay or neuter them. I own a purebred German Shepherd, and I think your advice is just wrong for owners of purebred pets. Maybe mongrels from the shelter need to be spayed and neutered but doing that will alter his behavior. Plus I plan to breed him. You should rethink your advice. - Tom C., Roswell, Ga.DEAR TOM: Nah, I don’tneed to rethink my advice. The vast majority of pet owners in this country do not need to be breeding their dogs or cats for any reason. Some profes-sional breeders who do not spay or neuter their dogs or cats, but respon-sible breeders don’t just breed pets because they have certifi cation papers. They select carefully so that harmful traits (like hip dysplasia, a problem with German Shepherds) do not carry through to new generations. Some professionals only breed working dogs, for police and military. Others are extremely selective about whom their dogs go to. Many will recommend that dogs not suited to be bred be neutered or spayed. Neutering your

German Shepherd may indeed cause behavioral changes; in many dogs the procedure reduces aggression. But you also eliminate the risk of your dog getting out and father-ing a bunch of unwanted puppies with, say, the owner of a different breed of dog who thought her precious also was too special to be spayed. But you don’t have to believe me. Talk to your dog’s vet, or to a professional AKC-registered breeder of German Shepherds and get the facts. DEAR PAW’S CORNER:Several years ago I ad-opted a wonderful Border Collie, “Maisie,” from a couple who couldn’t cope with her allergies: tree pol-lens, weeds and grasses. She received allergy shots for more than a year. One day a new veterinarian recommended a doctor of Chinese medicine nearby. They said, “We need to build her immune sys-tem.” Within a very short time she was 100 percent better. She lived happilyuntil she was almost 17years old. I was fortunate to fi nd a veterinarian who was open to alternative treatments. — An Animal Lover in Littleton, Colo.DEAR ANIMAL LOVER:Every pet’s needs and re-sponses to treatments are a bit different — especially when using alternative, homeopathic or holistic therapies — and it can be diffi cult to fi nd the right combination of medication or therapy. I’m impressed by your patience and dili-gence. ©King Features

ScrapbookingScraps by Jamie Plyler
Hi Jamie,When I fi rst started scrapbooking, I bought scrapbook kits that were themed, such as holidays, boy, girl, etc. Now most places sell the papers by the page, and after purchasing pages, stickers, adhesive, etc., the cost really begins to add up. I miss the days of having pages, stickers, etc. of a theme all in one easy package. I like to buy the bulk pack-ages of 12x12 paper in multiple colors, pat-terns, and themed like holidays or seasons. I was wondering if there was a website that had the best deals. And what tips you may have for getting the most for your money.Thanks, Melinda (Ellwood City)
Melinda,I don’t r eally buy my scrapbooking supplies online. The only supplies I buy online ar e for my Cricut fr om cricutmachine.com. All my other supplies I pur chase fr om craft stor es (local stor es, Pat Catan’s, Michaels, etc.) or Walmart. The fi rst thing I always look for is the clearance items or seasonal/holiday items (af-ter the holiday). You would be surprised what you can fi nd for 70%-90% of f at some of these stores. And local “mom and pop” shops have especially good sales when they are changing over inventor y. Most craft stores have cou-pons every week for 40%-50% off as well. I am a huge bargain shopper so I watch for the really good sales. I did fi nd one website that seems to have pretty good deals, scrapbooking-ware-house.com. But I have not or dered anything from them myself. Other stor es you wouldn’t think to check ar e Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, and Tuesday Morning. I have gotten some r eally good deals at Tuesday Morning. And you can still buy page kits. They just ar en’t as widely available. I do know Michaels Arts and Crafts carries them. © WBB 2013

WHY WALK
OutdoorOpportunitiesBy COL(Ret.) Grey D. Berrier II
If you take a moment to think about it, walking is a fundamental par t of most outdoor activities we ea-gerly pursue. No matter whether you hunt, fi sh, hike, backpack, or bir d-watch; it involves getting ar ound on your own two feet. T oday, when health statistics refl ect that most American adults and children need to become mor e active, walking is an excellent fi rst step in making positive, long-term lifestyle choices. What makes walking so gr eat? First, it is a low impact exercise that people of all ages, sizes, health-conditions, and fi tness levels can par ticipate in at their own pace and level of intensity. Second, minimal equipment is r equired: primarily comfor table foot-wear and appropriate clothing for conditions. Thir d, walks can match the time available. Fourth, it is an outdoor activity that you can do with a par tner, fam-ily members, an entire group, just the dog, or alone. Fifth, walking is a year-round outdoor exercise that can be brought indoors on a treadmill or at the mall. Finally, walkers have abundant choices amongst the many parks, trails, rail-trails, countr y roads, and neighborhood sidewalks in our area. When walking, please do so safely. Day or night, scan the ground for obstacles, carry a cell phone to call a family member or 911, on roadways always walk on the shoulder to-wards opposing traf fi c, wear bright clothing and/or refl ective belt/vest, and carry either a fl ashlight or chemlight. Many individuals choose to listen to music or talk on their phones when walking. I encourage you to “take a different path,” to begin to experience the world ar ound you, God’s Cr eation, thr ough all fi ve senses. You will begin to see new animals and plants, hear the sounds of nature, and smell sweet, pungent, and musky odors that you pr eviously never noticed. Increasing your awar eness of the world ar ound you will often lead to seeking to broaden your overall out-door IQ. As a hunter , you may be asking yourself, “Why should I take up walking now when hunting season is a long way off?” The bottom line is: if you want to re-main active later in life you need to build your fi tness foundation now. This same logic applies to walkers/hikers/backpackers. Everyone needs to think about putting in their mileage now in order to keep up with future generations. Regar dless of your choice of outdoor activities, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to take good care of the one and only body that God’s given you. I encourage you to take time to walk, no matter what your cur rent level of fi tness; and see how far you can pr ogress in impr oved per formance, miles covered, and a better awar eness/knowledge of our environment. W ith the weather impr oving and the time change this weekend, I hope you’ll take advan-tage of extra daylight to get out walking soon. God Bless, Be Safe, and Great Outdoors! © WBB 2013

That’s Something CURIOUS by F. Will
Sleep. That’s one of my favorite subjects. The average person drops off to sleep in only seven min-utes. This is wher e I am the cur ve-breaker. If I lay down, especially in front of the television, my sleep will begin in seconds, not minutes. Sometimes to waken in the middle of the night with the TV remote still in my hand with the channel listings still scroll-ing thr ough. It’s disappointing to sleep thr ough a random pr ogram. I would much pr efer to choose the show that I’m going to sleep thr ough. It tur ns out that there are benefi ts to choosing sleep instead of television. A brain is mor e active sleeping than watching TV and your body bur ns mor e calories too. Although I’ve often tried, I haven’t been able to do both at the same time. Sleep is so important that a person could die from lack of sleep sooner than lack of food. Star vation... a few weeks. No sleep... 10 days. I hope that I don’t have to give up either because of a fondness for both. Here’s something curious: The record for the longest period of time without sleep was somebody who was in a r ocking chair marathon - 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes. The r ecord holder experienced hallucinations, paranoia, slurred speech, blurred vi-sion, and memor y problems. It was even worse for the poor guy holding the stopwatch. Our biggest problem with sleep occurs at the same time ever y day... when the alar m goes of f. Three times is the average for pr essing the snooze button. Somniphobia is the fear of sleep. I don’t know if they have a name for the fear of getting up. W e spend about one thir d of our lives sleeping. Naps are popular and good for you too. They im-prove memor y, decrease the risk of hear t disease, and guarantee shorter nightmares. Giraf fes only sleep 2 hours a day , but dolphins never get a break. Only half of their brain sleeps at a time. I read somewhere that they sleep with one eye open. I swear that my mother could do that when I was a kid. Koalas sleep 22 hours a day. That doesn’t leave much time for anything else. The Super Sleep-er Award goes to the snail. They can sleep for three years. To watch a snail, I’m not sur e that there is a way to tell if they’r e asleep or not. But I’ll tr y to be careful the next time I see one. W ouldn’t want to wake her up. © WBB 2013

Our Daily BreadHearing God by Richard De Haan
Read: 2 Peter 1:16-21All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. 2 Timothy 3:16The fi rst mor ning I hear d the mockingbir d practicing his bagful of imitations outside my window, I was thrilled by the beauty of his songs. Gradually, however, I began to take this early morning songster for granted. One day as I awoke, it dawned on me that I no longer appreciated my regular visitor. It wasn’t the mockingbird’s fault. He was still there. His beautiful song hadn’t changed, but I was no longer listening for it.As believers in Christ, we may have a similar experi-ence hearing God speak to us in His W ord. When we are fi rst saved, the Scriptures, with their soul-stir-ring instr uction and vital spiritual food, ar e deeply satisfying. As time goes on, however , we r outinely read those same por tions over and over in a man-ner that no longer speaks to us. Our spiritual senses grow dull and lethargic, and God’s exhilarating Word becomes commonplace to us. But then, what joy we feel when a passage r eveals an exciting tr uth, and once again we “hear” the Lord!Are you r eading the Scriptur es out of a tir ed sense of duty? Or do you still possess the fresh expectancy you had when you fi rst believed? T oday, when you read God’s Word, listen closely for His voice.
I scanned the Scriptures thoughtlessly—My haste had closed my ear;
Then prayerfully I read once more—This time my heart could hear. —Gustafson

JAMES PATTERSON...2013 I’m old. Older than anyone in our family. I did have one aunt that also made it to 90. She was one of many children and once said, “I always wondered who would be the last to go and now I know.” I wish I could believe in life forever, but I don’t think the world works that way. Like a flower that blooms and fades or a sunset that goes into darkness, I think that is the way life is. If you want to go on forever, it has to be in the memories others have of you. I still think of a man called HI Ho. He was one of Aunt Margaret’s relatives. I just like the name. Seymour Cohen’s wife passed away. He prayed every day with the Rabbi. He told me, “it may not help her, but it does help me.” Father McCarter told me seventy years ago that when you die and are in the presence of God, there is such a feeling of awe that it will last through eternity. I think God sends a message every day saying, “ I am here. Look at the sunrise, the morning flowers or the sparkle of the snow.” There can be special messages just for you. The doctor who saves your life, an author who touches your heart or perhaps music that means a lot to you. That has to come from somewhere. Joe Mirow thought that every good deed that you did was saved in an account which you could access when you go to Heaven. Rev. Ramsey said once that if he died here, he wished to be cremated and returned to Bolivia where he had spent his life as a missionary. I asked him what would happen to him and he said, “God created me and He will restore me.” Good thought. I do think there are forces of evil. We ask God why things happen, but many things are not part of God’s plan. Hitler, the most evil man in history, was not a creation of God’s world. The best thing God did for me is find me a wonder-ful wife. If I have a last breath, I hope I use it to say, “Josephine.” Should I get a second breath, it will be to say, “Kim, Carla, George and Rick.”
