Aruba books ticket to second round WCH qualifier

Aruba won the bronze

medal of the NORCECA E

First Round qualification

tournament to the 2014

FIVB Women’s World

Championship following

their 3-0 (25-18, 25-11,

25-13) victory over

Cayman Islands.

Aruba had a slow

beginning but was

determined to book the

last spot available for the next round of competitions in 2013 gaining control one point

at a time. Earlier they had beaten Cayman Islands led by Jackie Toussaint who once

again took her team to finish in third place.

Aruba´s numbers showed advantage 7-1 in the blocking category and a big difference

by 14-4 in serving points. Jackie Toussaint with 14 points topped Aruba’s scorers.

Chante Smith-Johnson finished with 9 points for Cayman Islands.

“They changed their strategy and it wasn’t easy defeating them like we did in the

morning. We united as a team to qualify which makes me proud of my teammates”

expressed with tears Jackie Toussaint.

Anita Lansdell said “we’ve improved during the tournament so we must keep working

on the basics”.

Igmar Ogenia coach of Aruba first wanted to thank his team “their dedication and

sacrifice showed its results today; this match was slower than the first because

Cayman Islands was better but in the end we reached our goal.”

Cayman Islands’ coach, Keith Higgins indicated “the team is very young and tonight we

got closer to what I expected from the period of time that we’ve been training”.

luego de imponerse 3-0

sobre Islas Caimán.

Aruba tuvo un inicio lento

pero estaba determinado a

quedarse con la última

plaza disponible para la siguiente ronda de competencias en el 2013 por lo que

tomaron control un punto a la vez. Temprano ya habían derrotado a Islas Caimán

comandadas por Jacike Toussaint quien una vez más llevó a su equipo a terminar en

tercer lugar.

Los números de Aruba mostraron ventaja de 7-1 en la categoría de bloqueo y una gran

diferencia de 14-4 en puntos por servicio. Jackie Toussaint con 14puntos, fue la líder

en anotaciones por Aruba. Chante Smith-Johnson finalizó con 9 puntos para Islas

Caimán.

“Ellas cambiaron su estrategia y por eso no fue tan fácil vencerlas como en la mañana.

Nos unimos como equipo para lograr la clasificación, lo cual me hace sentir muy

orgullosa de mis compañeras” expresó con lágrimas Jackie Toussaint.

Anita Lansdell dijo “mejoramos durante el torneo así que debemos continuar

trabajando en los fundamentos.”

Igmar Ogenia entrenador de Aruba, primero agradeció a su equipo “su dedicación y

sacrificio que hoy mostró sus frutos; el juego fue más lento que el primero porque

Islas Caimán fue mejor, pero al final logramos el objetivo.”

El entrenador de Islas Caimán, Keith Higgins indicó “el equipo es bastante joven y esta

noche nos acercamos más a lo que esperaba por el período de tiempo que llevamos

entrenando.”

Jamaica’s solid blocking was

vital for their victory

finishing in first place undefeated; they had an impressive advantage of 23-8 over

Barbados in blocking points.

Lecia Brown was the winners’ best scorer with 23 points consisting in 14 attacks, 17 blocks and 2 aces; Maniki Thompson contributed with 11 points. Shari Mathews and Julia Lewis lead Barbados with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Shedeiky Hamilton Jamaican captain, expressed her excitement with great pride, “for many years we weren’t able to defeat Barbados and doing it twice in the same day is a wonderful feeling and shows that Jamaica is getting better.”

“I am disappointed; Jamaica shut our attack, which is our strength, with great blocking. We put up a good fight and there’s a lot to fix” said Thonya Joseph.

Jamaican coach, Gatashew Bonner indicated “this is a big win for us, some unforced errors cost us a set but the team’s recovery was good; I am happy for Jamaica and the girls for their hard work.”

For Andrew Brathwaite, the loss was bitter sweet “I am disappointed in losing but I am glad for Jamaica because they deserved to win. I believe there were some pretty close calls from the refs but in the end the nature of sport is to win or lose. Overall the region is developing”.

para la victoria de Jamaica y

finalizar en el primer lugar de forma invicta; tuvieron una ventaja impresionante sobre

Barbados de 23-8 en puntos de bloqueo.

Lecia Brown fue la mejor anotadora de las ganadoras con 23 puntos consistentes en 14 ataques, 17 en bloqueo y 2 en puntos por servicio; Maniki Thompson contribuyó con 11 puntos. Shari Mathews y Julia Lewis lideraron a Barbados con 16 y 13 puntos respectivamente.

Shedeiky Hamilton la capitana de Jamaica, expresó su emoción con gran orgullo, “por muchos años no habíamos podido derrotar a Barbados y hacerlo dos veces en el mismo día es una sensación maravillosa lo cual demuestra que Jamaica está mejorando.”

“Estoy decepcionada; Jamaica estropeó nuestro ataque, nuestra fortaleza, con un excelente bloqueo. Pusimos resistencia pero hay mucho por arreglar” dijo Thonya Joseph.

El entrenador de Jamaica, Gatashew Bonner indicó “este es un gran triunfo para nosotros, algunos errores no forzados nos costaron un set pero el equipo supo recuperarse bien; estoy muy contento por Jamaica y por las chicas por su trabajo duro.”

Para Andrew Brathwaite, la derrota es agridulce “estoy decepcionado por perder pero estoy contento por Jamaica porque merecían ganar. Pienso que hubo algunas decisiones arbitrales muy cerradas pero al final la naturaleza del deporte es ganar o perder. En general la región está desarrollando.”
