THE BIRTH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTISTOUR PARISH FEAST DAY

Saint John the Baptist (c. 6 BC c. AD 30-36?)John the Baptist (Hebrew: , Yoanan ha-mmabil, Arabic: Yahya ibn Zakariya,

    Aramaic: Yoanan, Greek: /

, Ho Hgios/Tmios Endoxos, Profts, Prdromos, ka Baptists Ion-nes) was the son of Zachary, a priest of the Temple inJerusalem, and Elizabeth, a kinswoman (cousin) ofMary who visited her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim, southwest of Jerusalem after the AngelGabriel had told Zachary that his wife would bear achild even though she was an old woman.

The Birthday of Saint John the Baptist is one ofthe oldest feasts in the liturgy. This feast makes usaware of the wonderful inter-relationship betweenthe sacred mysteries.

Ordinarily the Church observes the day of a saint's death as his feast because that day marks hisentrance into heaven. To this rule there are two notable exceptions; the birthdays of Blessed Maryand of Saint John the Baptist. All other persons were stained with original sin at birth; hence, theywere displeasing to God. But Mary, already in the first moment of her existence, was free fromoriginal sin (for which reason even her very conception is commemorated by a special feast), andJohn was cleansed of original sin in the womb of his mother. This is the dogmatic justification fortoday's feast. In the breviary St. Augustine explains the reason for today's feast in the followingwords:

"Apart from the most holy solemnity commemorating our Savior's birth, the Church keepsthe birthday of no other person except that of John the Baptist. (The feasts of the Page 2

Immaculate Conception and of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin had not yet been introduced.)

In the case of other saints or of God's chosen ones, the Church, as you know, solemnizes theday on which they were reborn to everlasting beatitude after ending the trials of this life andgloriously triumphing over the world.

"For all these the final day of their lives, the day on which they completed their earthlyservice is honored. But for John, the day of his birth, the day on which he began this mortallife, is likewise sacred. The reason for this is, of course, that the Lord willed to announce to

men His own coming through the Baptist, lest if He appeared suddenly, they would fail torecognize Him. John represented the old covenant and the law. Therefore he preceded theRedeemer, even as the Law preceded and heralded the new dispensation of grace."

The story of Saint John the Baptist begins: "In the days of Herod, King of Judea." So thatsets the scene. The time was before the birth of Jesus, but the king was the same. Up in thehill country, in a town of Judea, there lived an old man and his wife, Zachary and Elizabeth, holy and good but childless, and this was their great sorrow. Zachary was a priest, and twice ayear for a week at a time he went down to Jerusalem to serve in the temple. At the time thestory begins, Zachary had been chosen by lot to offer incense on the altar of incense during themorning and evening sacrifices. One day when he went to the holy place alone, he saw an angel

standing by the altar and was troubled and much afraid. But the angel told him not to be afraid. He had come to tell Zachary of a son God would send him, in whom he would have "joy and glad-ness... for he shall be great before the Lord ...and shall be filled with the Holy Spirit even fromhis mother's womb." (It was here foretold that the son would be born without original sin.)

Then the angel said, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God... and behold, youshall be dumb and unable to speak until the day when these things come to pass, because youhave not believed my words which will be fulfilled in their proper time." And when Zacharycame out of the temple and faced the wondering crowd outside, he made signs to them as besthe could and they saw that he was dumb.

So Zachary went home and Elizabeth discovered soon that she was with child. She retiredfrom public view, the Gospel says: to be quiet and prepared, and ponder her precious secret.

Six months went by, and the same angel appeared to Mary in a town of Galilee called Naz-areth, and greeted her with words that will never be forgotten: "Hail, full of grace, the Lord iswith you. Blessed are you among women." Then, as he said to Zachary, he said to Mary: "Do not beafraid." He told her that she would bring forth a son and call His name Jesus, and that "He shall begreat and be called the Son of the Most High." Then, after he had told her the child would be con-ceived of the Holy Spirit, he told her Elizabeth's secret and explained as he did to Zachary that al-though Elizabeth was very old, it would come to pass "for nothing shall be impossible with God."

Then Mary, in words so simple it is hard to grasp that they were to change the history ofthe world not merely change it, but stop it still, and startle time and space and fill eternity, said: "Be it done unto me according to Your Word."

And she "rose up and went with haste" to visit her cousin in the hill country. She enteredthe house of Zachary and greeted Elizabeth.

"And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe in herwomb leapt. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out with a loud voice, say-ing: 'Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! And how have I de-served that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, the moment the sound ofthy greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leapt for joy....'"

"Saint John jumped for joy inside his mother." It was the moment of his sanctification, being cleansed of original sin by the Holy Spirit; and right after it came Mary's Magnificat.

That may serve the profit-purposes of acharitable organization. Yet its not very practical for people whohave serious transportation needs but cant afford to buy a car.

On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it di-rectly into the hands of a needy person or family so it can be usedto drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many otherpractical needs for getting around. A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21-July 4, 2012Prepared for the people of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois

Day 4: Sunday, June 24, 2012 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist, SolemnityLike St. John, we are born to proclaim in word and work who Jesus is and the impact that Christ has over all of life.Psalm 63: O God, you are my God- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Likea land parched, lifeless, and without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is better than life; my lips offer you worship! I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift upmy hands calling on your name. My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouthshall honor you! When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall that you indeedare my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right handupholds me. But those who seek my life will come to ruin; they shall go down to the depth of the earth! They shall be handed over to the sword and become the prey of jackals! But the king shall rejoice in God;all who swear by the Lord shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be shut!Let us pray: O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord,

give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way ofsalvation and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Day 5: Monday, June 25, 2012 A Prayer for Families (Book of Blessings)We bless your name, O Lord, for sending your own incarnate Son, to become part of a family, so that, as helived its life, he would experience its worries and its joys. We ask you, Lord, to protect and watch over thisfamily, so that in the strength of your grace its members may enjoy prosperity, possess the priceless gift ofyour peace, and, as the Church alive in the home, bear witness in this world to your glory. We ask thisthrough Christ our Lord. Amen.

Day 6: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 Evening Prayer (from the Byzantine Tradition)In the evening, in the morning, and at noon we praise you, we bless you, we give you thanks, and we begyou, Master of the universe, grant that our hearts not yield to evil words but free us from all who try toenslave our souls, because our eyes are turned to you, O Lord, and we have placed our hope in you. Do notabandon us, O God! For every glory, honor, and adoration is due to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, nowand always and for ever and ever. Amen.

Day 7: Wednesday, June 27, 2012 St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop & DoctorSt Cyril lived, preached, and prayed in the 4th and 5th centuries in present day Egypt. He taught the truth of the total

love and humility of Jesus who became one like us in all things but sin. To strengthen this teaching, he called Mary

Theotokos, the bearer of God. The Memorare- Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it knownthat anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspiredby this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sor-

rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) this summer is

conducting a Fortnight for Freedom to begin with the vigil of the feasts ofSt. Thomas More and St. John Fischer and culminate with IndependenceDay. The purpose of this effort is to issue a call to defend religious liberty,

and to urge the laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of

Rights. We will be providing prayers over the next three bulletins that can beprayed during June 21 through July 4, 2012. Also, the entire list of prayers

can be found on the St. John the Baptist website, stjohnwinfield.org.

We know prayer can make miracles and we (may have) witnessed it a number of times in our life. The

change in the Communist countries is the best example for that. Today we need freedom to practice

our faith without restrictions of any kind. So let us answer the call of the Church in our country for the

fortnight of prayer. Prayer with penance will be answered immediately. Fr. Thomas Theneth CMI

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) religious exemp-tion only applies to those who worship, but not to those who serve

those in need and bring religious values to society that flows from suchworship. The HHS mandate, therefore, would force Catholic hospitals, schools, charities, and other ministries to support education and fundingfor sterilizations, contraception, and abortion-causing drugs.

Unfortunately, HHS has adopted as its own a definition of religious em-ployer that was drafted by the ACLU in California, and has never been adopted at the federallevel. Under that definition, the federal government has presumed to define just what a commu-nity of faith must do to earn the right to an exemption . . .for e.g., to be exempt, you have toserve primarily people of your own faith; employ primarily people of your own faith; and have asyour purpose the inculcation of religious beliefs (rather than, say, service, charity, education orhealing)! As the director of Catholic Charities USA, remarked, even Jesus feeding the 5,000 would

not qualify for an exemption according to the HHS.

Its not only churches that enjoy religious freedomreligious schools, charities, hospitals, andother ministries do as well. Our prayer is that the mandate will state that any entity that findsthese mandates morally objectionable is not coerced to support them.

The Fortnight for Freedom is a 14-day period set aside for education and intense prayer in sup-port of religious freedom. Please clip out the following prayer and pray it daily.

Prayer for Religious FreedomAlmighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have

set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1).We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty,

the foundation of human rights, justice and the commongood. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect andpromote our liberties; by your grace may we have the

courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all thosewho live in this blessed land. We ask this through theIntercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, andIn the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in theUnity of the Holy Spirit, with whom You live and reign,

One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Day 8: Thursday, June 28, 2012 St. Irenaeus, Bishop and MartyrA Prayer for Life- Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashionhuman lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, andrenew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this throughChrist our Lord. Amen.

Day 9: Friday, June 29, 2012 Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles, SolemnityJesus called Peter rock and told him to feed the sheep, feed the Church. Jesus called Paul to preach the

good news to the nations. Let us pray: O God, who on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul give us thenoble and holy joy of this day, grant, we pray, that your Church may in all things follow the teaching of thosethrough whom she received the beginnings of right religion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who livesand reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Day 10: Saturday, June 30, 2012 The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman ChurchLet us pray: O God, who consecrated the abundant first fruits of the Roman Church by the blood of theMartyrs, grant, we pray, that with firm courage we may together draw strength from so great a struggle and

ever rejoice at the triumph of faithful love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

DuPage County is the third most affluent county in Illinois which contributes to awidespread misperception that there are no poor people living here. In reality, over60,000 DuPage County residents live below the federal poverty level. Over half ofthese individuals are school children!

Please consider donating to the Back to School Fair. Your donation will allowCatholic Charities to purchase school supply gift certificates for distribution at theFair. Donations may be mailed to Catholic Charities, Back to School Fair, 26 W.

St. Charles Road, Lombard, IL 60148. Or, to donate online, visit catholicchariti-esjoliet.org.
