    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family,Peace and all good! As I was going over the Scripture

readings for this weeks liturgies, I came across a story

about a hot air balloon pilot in Fitzgerald, Georgia, who

saved the lives of his five passengers before being swept

upwards of 18,000 feet into a storm that cost him his life.

The surviving skydivers credited the calm demeanor andsharp piloting skills of pilot Edward Ristaino for their last-

minute rescue at an outing near Atlanta last weekend.

In todays Gospel account from John (12:20-33), we en-

counter the calm demeanor and sharp piloting skills of

Jesus who brings us salvation at the cost of His own life.

This particular scene in John marks the last public appear-

ance of Jesus before His arrest, torture, and execution at

the hands of the authorities. He has already entered

through the gates of Jerusalem in what onlookers mistak-

enly celebrate as the arrival of their political messiah.

They look to Jesus as a potential military leader, but con-

tinually deceive themselves as to the real meaning of Hisministry.

Here, on the threshold of Holy Week this fifth Sunday in

Lent, we position ourselves alongside Jesus original audi-

ence, composed of both Jews and Gentiles (Greeks) as

He preaches about His true purpose and destiny. Jesus

reminds them and us that He is bound to fulfill His des-

tiny His glory which passes through the Cross and on

to His triumphant Resurrection. He reassures us of His

promise, His presence and His care when we make the

commitment to follow Him: where I am, there shall my

servant be also; if anyone serves me, the Father will honor

him. (v.26)Jesus openly admits that His own soul is troubled (v.

    27) at what He is being asked to endure and accomplish in

His approaching Passion and Death. In doing so, He shows

us how completely human He is and how much He identi-

fies with us in our own vulnerability. At that moment Jesus

turns from the crowd to pray to the Father directly, surren-

dering His entire being to Gods Love and Gods Will. His

praying in this manner is meant to be an example to us in

our own moments of anxiety and confusion; of doubt and

fear. The thunderous affirmation of God echoes the pres-

ence of the Father and the Spirit both at the baptism of

Jesus and at his Transfiguration. Jesus is to be lifted upnot just onto the Cross, but into eternal glorya glory He

promises to share with all who follow Him.

All of this points to the tremendous solemnity of the

concluding events of Lent that begin next weekend on

Palm Sunday. But this passage from John is not intended

to inspire only awe and distant wonder as we enter in a

most poignant way into the events of the Passion, Death,

and Resurrection of Jesus. Rather, it is intended to

  • 8/2/2019 Bulletin for Mission San Luis Rey Parish 3-25-2012

    3/12

reassure and console us that Godever merciful, gracious,

tender, and near--will never abandon us in our suffering

and struggles. That when we make the commitment to

follow Jesusone day at a timewithin the context of our

individual and collective livesHe is always at our side.

And for His part, the sacrifice of His life is not the conclu-

sion of some sort of Greek tragedy, but rather the ultimate

triumphant profession and proclamation of His deep and

abiding love for us all.Holy Week is near. Easter is on the horizon. We con-

tinue on our journey, or perhaps even decide to push the

restart button on our Lenten disciplines of giving more,

praying more, and fasting (which for us Americans means

slowing down more). But we do so as people of hope

and incipient joy. No matter our weaknesses or shortcom-

ings, the glory of God made manifest in Jesus continues to

transform the world in and through us, His very human,

very weak, sometimes even very confused and distracted

disciples and friends. And that is very Good News indeed.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

    SLOW DOWN

How can I hear what God issaying to me? We try to listenmore closely to the voice of God

within us. One of the ways for

me to hear Gods voice is by noticing what is going on in my

life, Gods words through reading the Bible, and listening at-

tentively to other peoples stories. God works powerfully

through people helping each other to make connections be-

    tween everyday life and faith.

There is often so little time to notice what is happening tous. A Small Christian Community can be the means of becom-

ing aware of Gods help within our lives. A Small Christian

Community is a group of 8 to 12 adults, or families, who come

together, usually in each others homes, weekly or every

other week to share something of their stories with one an-other. They also dig deeper into the Sunday Scriptures to

discover Gods story. They are much like the early church.

The Mission San Luis Rey Core Team invites you to con-sider joining an SCC. All cultures are welcomed to join or start

a group (8 to 12 people). Find out more from Eileen Costa

(SCC Coordinator), at (760) 231-9930; or Bartolo Mendez at

    (760) 945-3701; or Tavale Tavale at (760) 295-4088.

    8/12

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 25 de marzo del 2012

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

vida individual y colectivaEl siempre est a nuestro lado.

    Padre Chuck
