FROM THE PASTOR…

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer, relax-ing and spending me with family and friends. As every-one can see, or at least those who park out back, work has begun on the Our Lady of Guadalupe Sports Court and Parking Lot out behind the Serra Center. This will hopefully be finished in three or four months, depending on how the work goes. I would like to take this oppor-tunity to thank all of you who contributed to the second collec on and gave addi onal support for this pro-ject. All of us are really very grateful for your love and support of this parish. Also, hats off to all those who made the Christmas in July event such a big success. It was, as usual, a wonder-ful event and the money made by Christmas in July is very helpful to defray the expenses running the school. What you may not know is that all the parents and teachers get together to staff the event, working on everything from organizing the vendors, food booths, carnival, games, Sister Gladys' Rummage sale, parking, trash, setup, cleanup, signs, publicity, raffles, entertainment -- you name it, they're doing it for three days straight. Someone even gets a nice dinner together for everyone in the evening so all those red folks don't have to cook. For all those who worked on the event and all you who a ended it, thank you for suppor ng your parish school. Finally, I would also like to recognize those who helped make our Youth Group par cipa on in Steuben-ville, San Diego, such a big success. Last weekend, a num-ber of our high school teens went down with the Youth Leaders, Fr. Adrian and I. We par cipated in the Steubenville San Diego event, called "All for God", that gathers young people from all over Southern California and even elsewhere for a weekend of faith, friendship and fun. It is the largest gathering of high school youth in the country. There were speakers, music and prayer, Mass and good food. It was a really good me for the young people to get together and share their faith.

Blessings and all good this summer,

Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH - PARISH COUNCIL

We have a new Parish Council! It all started on a beau ful and cool morning last March when Leadership from all the Parish ministries gathered in the Serra Cen-ter. That early morning we discussed the current state of the Parish and the future vision for establishing a Parish Council. Kathleen Flanagan, OM/Parish CEO, David Schmolke of the Parish Finance Council, and Fr. David spoke about the current situa on of the parish. At the end of the Leadership mee ng, each par cipant was asked to suggest names of parishioners who in their ex-perience they felt would be well suited as candidates for a new Parish Council. Nearly 100 parishioners were rec-ommended by those present at the mee ng, many re-ceiving mul ple votes. Those names were all very prayer-fully considered for either the new Parish Council or oth-er parish leadership opportuni es. In crea ng a Council, there was a great desire to represent the parish cultural communi es, men and women, young as well as chrono-logically blessed. From these names, the new Parish Council was creat-ed. Many thanks to the Candidates who answered the community’s (and God’s!) call to serve. The members of the new Parish Council are: Andy Domingo, Sr., Buster Beazley, Elizabeth Salinas, Jorge Soto, Jose Maceda, Sr., Juan Jimenez, Lani Paulo, Laura Chun, Marta Werner, Pat Sheehan, Teresa Monasi, Tony Mar nez, and ex offi-cio members Kathleen Flanagan and Fr. David Gaa. Please keep the new Parish Council lovingly in your pray-ers.

Invitado Especial OSCAR CUEVAS

Celebrate with us “one of the most important feasts of the Liturgical Year,” the Solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where we commemorate that “at the end of her earthly life Mary was taken up, body and soul, into Heaven, that is, into the glory of eternal life, into full and perfect communion with God.”
