June 2, 2013 - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ| 3

A Leer from Fr. David - Pastor

The common wisdom these days is that aer receiving

the Sacrament of Confirmaon, young people stop prac-

cing their faith. Newspapers roll out arcle aer arcle,

detailing how young Catholics appear disengaged or dis-

interested in their Church. But, I am happy to report

that this has not been my experience at Mission San Luis

    Rey Parish.

At a recent round table discussion with Fr. Adrian, our

young people reported how they have experienced Christ

in our Faith Family and that they are building a deep rela-

onship with Him. With the good work of the Confirma-

on Team and the strong foundaon built by our Reli-

gious Educaon Program, young people are meeng to-

gether for Mass, prayer, worship, adoraonfinding op-

portunies for community and fellowship. There is an

excitement growing among our young adults and youth

that is contagious. I believe that we are all witnessing

the movement of the Holy Spirit, asking us to fully em-

brace, encourage and support our youth, young adults

and youth leaders as they deepen their faith.

As our young people are growing in holiness, they are

challenging each other and all of us to do the

same. They are asking us to take risks and make changes

in the way we do things; to find fresh and dynamic ways

to aract young men and women to the Faith and to

Christ. They want their Church to be a place where there

is excitement and enthusiasm for the Gospel. They want

to deepen their love for the Lord through prayer andfaith-sharing, and to serve the poor as The Holy Father,

Pope Francis has urged us all to do.

Aer prayerful consideraon, Fathers Adrian, Luis, Ar-

turo and I have decided to listen to the Youth/Young

Adults of our Parish and face our Faith Formaon pro-

grams in a new direcon in order to support their faith

journey. To accomplish this, we are making meaningful

changes in our programs. We are in the process of hiring

a full me Director of Faith Formaon for Youth and

Young Adults. With the support of the Franciscan School

of Theology and the Retreat Center, all our parishionerswill be offered an even wider variety of Adult Educaon

Programs; Bible Study, courses in Theology and Spirituali-

ty as well as retreats. With a restructuring of the Reli-

gious Educaon Department, organizaonal changes on

our parish staff have had to be made. Bill Bischoff has

le us as the Director of Adult Faith Formaon and that

posion on the staffhas been eliminated.

Bill came to work here at the parish eleven years ago

and has worked in the Diocese for 16 years. As the Di-

rector of Religious Educaon, many members of our

parish family are grateful to him for his hard work with

our Confirmaon Programs, RCIA and the Bapsm

Team. Bill prepared many military personnel for Sacra-

ments, parcularly those about to be deployed. He has

been parcularly generous working with those adults

who have returned to the Church who wanted to know

more about their faith. Hes taught many Bible Study

Classes and courses in Catholic Theology. He trained

many parents and volunteer teachers in basic catechist

courses with great success. Many parishioners are grate-

ful to Bill for his leadership and instrucon over the

years. Recently, you might remember that Bill acted as

our Master of Ceremonies at Parish Liturgies, especially

at Holy Week and Easter. His calm and grace kept us all

on track in very tricky situaons during various ceremo-

nies.On behalf of our staffand parishioners, I thank Bill for

his devoted service to the parish and for his work in so

many areas of parish life. This is not the end of his min-

istry. He will connue to give retreats and is scheduled

for a Twilight Retreat at the Old Mission later this sum-

mer. We all wish Bill and his wife Joanne many happy

years, and we hope that Bill takes many good memories

away with him. At the staff party held for Bill this last

week, the Old Mission and Parish staffs came together to

assure Bill of how much we value and appreciate the

great work that he has done at Mission San Luis Rey Par-ish and wished him Gods blessings.

Change can be a challenge for everyone. However, I

feel excited and blessed about what God is doing and

going to do for our young people and young adults at

Mission San Luis Rey Parish, and indeed for all of us. To

our older parishioners I say you are not forgoen; we

rely on your wisdom, your witness, your prayers, and on

your support. We look forward in the fall to providing

    ongoing educaon for you also.

My prayer is that our whole Faith Community at San

Luis Rey grows in its knowledge and love of Christ and

His Church as we walk this journey together.

    Sincerely yours,

    Father David Gaa, O.F.M.

    riesgos y hacer cambios en la forma que hacemos las cosas;

    dad an ms amplia de Programas de Educacin de Adultos;

    yecto.

    Sinceramente suyo,

    Padre David Gaa, OFMPrroco

The Promise of GodsUncondional Love and Infinite Generosity

The church has always encouraged authenc and

balanced forms of devoon that will help the faith-

ful to deepen their appreciaon of the Eucharist.

The First Friday devoon is dedicated to the most

Sacred Heart of Jesus and is associated with St.

Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gi of

an intense grace filled prayer life. In her myscal

insights (visions) she was given messages to fight

the heresy of Jansenism that drove people way from

    God.

The devoon to the Sacred Heart of Jesus empha-

sizes the mercy and love of God and encourages be-

lievers to frequently receive communion. Through

receiving the sacrament, people will come to experi-

ence and know the uncondional love of God.

On First Fridays, Friday, June 7, (Friday in honor ofGood Friday), parishioners gather aer the Daily

Mass and spend from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Eucharisc

Adoraon. People pray for themselves and the

church to always pracce and experience the mys-

tery of receiving communion and parcipang in

    the sacramental encounter with Jesus.

Please join the members of our parish in this very

important part of the churchs devoonal life.
