March 26, 2017 - Fourth Sunday of Lent | 3

D F ,

Peace and all Good! Tradi onally, this Fourth Sunday of Lent marks a joyful relief from the seriousness and somberness of the many weeks of prepara on for Easter. Hence to-day is called in La n Laetare Sunday, Rejoice Sunday, a name that comes from the Entrance An phon for this weekend’s Masses: “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her/Be joyful, all who were in mourning;/exult and be sa sfied at her abundant breast.” (Isaiah 66:10-11) Even in Lent, a me of fas ng and repentance, we rejoice, because we know that God is love, and our loving God will provide for all our needs. As an out-ward sign of our joy today, flowers adorn the altar and rose-colored vestments are worn. Pope Francis has constantly challenged us to be of loving care and support for one another and for our world. During Lent, we have the opportunity to re-flect on our rela onship with God and with others. Some mes we sin and fall short of the ideal. And so, I would like to invite all of us to take part in the Sacra-ment of Reconcilia on this coming Thursday. We will have over 20 confessors available. The Penance Litur-gies will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. At the beginning of Lent, many of us took “Opera on Rice Bowls” home with us to remember the poor and hungry throughout the world. Please bring your rice bowls to Mass with you for a special offertory proces-sion at all of the Masses next Sunday. If you do not have a “rice bowl”, you are invited to take part in the offertory also. All funds from this offering will be sent to Catholic Relief Services for their chari es through-out the world. Please be generous. Thank you! In closing, please note that due to the Penance Litur-gies this Thursday, the final Soup and Study of the “Seven Last Words” will be on Thursday, April 6th at 6:00 p.m. See you there! Love,

LENTEN SOUP AND STUDY “The Last Words of Jesus” Thursdays of Lent: April 6th. St. Francis Hall—6:00 p.m.

LENTEN “TAIZE PRAYER” Wednesdays at 7pm - Old Mission

March 29 & April 5

All are welcome to our beautiful Taize Prayer Service. Through meditative and simple chants, we are brought into the presence of God. Then, we venerate a special cross—a replica of the cross of Taize. Our prayer will be bilingual. Please come and be nourished by this beautiful and meditative prayer on Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00 p.m. in the Old Mission Church.

The deeds you do may be the only sermon

some persons will hear today. ~~St. Francis of Assisi

“OPERATION RICE BOWL” - LENTEN ALMSGIVING

At the beginning of Lent, you were invited to par ci-pate in a parish wide Lenten almsgiving. As one of the three prac ces of Lent—Prayer, Fas ng and Almsgiv-ing—we were asked to commit to a community wide peniten al act of mercy by par cipa ng in Opera on Rice Bowl. This means that each week we have a simple meal in our homes and give the money we saved from that meal to serve the needs of the hungry throughout the world. On next Sunday 4/2/17, the Fi h Sunday of Lent, you are invited to bring your rice bowls filled with the money you have saved over Lent. We will have a procession for you to bring up your rice bowls or other financial gi s to the altar. Thank you for remembering the poor. “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you drink? … And the king will answer: “Whatever you did for one of these least broth-ers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Ma hew 25: 37,40)

With your help we will give out holiday food bas-kets again this East-er. Thanks to our food providers we can put together a food box with a good holiday feast

with all the trimmings plus a li le extra for just $40.00 per family! When you put your dona on in the collec on, please be sure it is clearly marked for an “Easter Basket.” We will gladly accept dona ons of turkeys, hams and canned goods which we ask that you bring directly to the Social Concerns Department in the Lore o House during our normal business hours (Tues-Sat. 8:00am-4:00pm). We appreciate you checking the expira on dates on all donated cans and packages of food. If you have any ques ons, please call Carmen Parra, Director of Social Concerns at 760-547-0708.

Saint Paul gives us a wakeup call. As stewards of the light of Christ, we are to reflect that light with the help of the Holy Spirit. If Christ’s work has transformed and illuminated our lives, there should be a change. The light of

Christ’s ac ve presence should be at work in us. And as the light shines within us, we take on the proper es of that light, and we shine too. We are used by God to shine the light of Christ in the lives of others. A challeng-ing Lenten reflec on: Is the light of Christ shining in our hearts? Is the light of Christ reflec ng out from us to oth-ers?
