Presentation of the Lord

The feast of the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated next Saturday. At the end of the fourth century, a woman named Etheria made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal, discovered in 1887, gives an unprecedented glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations she describes is the Epiphany (January 6), the observance of Christ’s birth, and the gala procession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days later—February 15. This feast emphasizes Jesus’ first appearance in the Temple more than Mary’s purification.

The observance spread throughout the Western Church in the fifth and sixth centuries. Because the Church in the West celebrated Jesus’ birth on December 25, the Presentation was moved to February 2, 40 days after Christmas.

At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugurated a candlelight procession; at the end of the same century the blessing and distribution of candles which continues to this day became part of the celebration, giving the feast its popular name: Candlemass.

Feast of St. Blaise The Feast of St. Blaise is on Sunday February 3. Because the feast falls on a Sunday we will not

celebrate the feast. However, we will be blessing throats after all the weekend masses. The blessing of throats has a long history. Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise."

Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles. In 316, the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, Agricola, arrested then-bishop Blaise for being a Christian. On their way to the jail, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet. Blaise cured the child, and though Agricola was amazed, he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. Therefore, Agricola beat Blaise with a stick and tore at his flesh with iron combs before beheading him. Fr. Jim

Attention Children Ages 5 & Up!

WE WANT TO BRING BACK OUR

Little Flowers and Blue Knights Clubs These exciting groups are aimed at providing youth of our parish an

opportunity to have fun while learning about our Catholic faith as we explore the saints and traditions of our church. This is all done in a manner very similar to Boy or Girl Scouts. Every member earns badges while playing games, making crafts and serving others. If you would be willing to have your family give this a try (you won’t be sorry!), please contact our Faith Formation office and leave your name. The Clubs will meet monthly on a day and time to be determined. We all lead very busy lives but our kids deserve more opportunities to be exposed to all things Good and Beautiful”! Contact 315-651-4351 or [email protected]

The Church Speaks Out for Justice: Equal Rights for Farmworkers

Protecting workplace dignity is essential to protecting human dignity in general. As

Catholics, we believe that workers have fundamental rights, including the right to

organize themselves to petition for improved working conditions. This has been

part of Church teaching for over 125 years. In New York State, farmworkers are

excluded from this and other basic rights granted to other workers. They can be

fired if they collectively bring a grievance to their supervisor. During our upcoming

Public Policy Weekend, please plan to sign the Diocese-wide petition to our state

elected officials, urging them to support equal labor rights for farmworkers.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

January 27, 2019 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared…”

(NEHEMIAH 8:10) Ezra’s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. He wants us to be happy! However, God expects us to be grateful for all that He has given us and to generously share our blessings with those who are in need without expecting anything in return.
