What is Lent all about? Giving

up chocolate or beer? No meat on Friday? Ash marks on our

forehead?

How about this: Lent is about spiritual renewal. It’s about a journey we’re invited to make. On the far hori-zon is the glory of Easter. On the near horizon—ashes, mortality, and tempta ons in a desert. It’s the me in between these two horizons that is a different kind of space; a passage, a me of being on the way. It is a me of conversion, of change, of growth, and also of uncer-tainty and “not knowing.” Lent is the annual trust walk of the Church, when we let ourselves be led by the Spirit into the desert of purifica on. Why not make a commitment this year to renew your spiritual life. We are offering a 6 week Living the Eucha-rist program and you are invited and encouraged to sign up for this annual trust walk of the church.

Series starts:

MONDAYS: Feb. 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16 & 23. Day Session: 2:00 p.m.

Evening session: 6:30 p.m. Parish Dining Rm.

For more informa on, please contact Claudia LaBarge at 760-749-2541 / lauck1750@a .net.

“Living the Eucharist” was inspiring and helped me grow more in love with the Eucharist.

Parish Pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi, Florence and Siena - April 2015 “In the footsteps of St. Francis”

A Parish Pilgrimage with Fr. Adrian Peelo, OFM Associate Pastor at San Luis Rey Parish

Following our highly successful pilgrimage in October 2014, there is another opportunity to travel in the footsteps of St. Francis and experience some of the holiest places in the Catholic world. Visit the tomb of St. Peter and the joy of seeing and hearing His Holiness Pope Francis. Visit the many holy and historic sites of Rome and the Va can, the Sis-

ne Chapel as well as the catacombs of St. Callisto. Pray in the shrines of Greccio and Assisi and celebrate Mass close to the tomb of St. Francis. Visit the Basilica of St. Clare and pray before the San Damiano Cross – the cross before which St. Francis prayed and where he heard the Lord call to him: “Francis, go and repair my House.” Experience the peace and tranquility of La Verna, the beau ful her-mitage high in the Apennines where St. Francis received the marks of the s gmata on his hands, feet, and side two years before his death. Wander through the historic streets of Florence with an experienced guide and then see the unrivaled splendor of Siena, the “Jewel of Italy” as well as the tomb of St. Catherine, the Basilica of St. Dominic and the famous Duomo. We will have Mass each day and guided tours of all the historic and religious sites; come with us on the trip of a life me! Contact Wendy Brophy (tour operator and SLR parishioner) at: 858-756-4174, or [email protected]. ~~Fr. Adrian

MINISTRY FOR PRIESTLY FORMATION

The future of our local Church is strengthened by the number of men who answer the call to a priestly voca on. We are blessed with a rich herit-age of men who have given their lives to the ser-vice of our Church. Their living example of Jesus Christ in our midst, as teacher, father, friend, and brother, has enriched us with their sacrifice and dedica on to Our Lord. The responsibility, spiritually and financially, of providing sufficient priests for the Church belongs to all of us. We are currently suppor ng 14 semi-narians thanks to the support of the Annual Catho-lic Appeal. This year we ordained three priests and one transi onal deacon. Our Office for Priestly Forma on administers the diocesan program for both pre-seminarian and seminarian candidates and is located at the St. Francis Center on the University of San Diego cam-pus. As a house of forma on, St. Francis Center, helps prepare men in each of the four areas of for-ma on: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral for admission to a seminary school of theology. Those who are called to priestly service touch all our lives, the lives of our family members, neigh-bors, friends, and our en re communi es. Our par-ishes have benefited from their leadership and guidance. Our communi es have been inspired by their presence, demonstra ng that living the life of Christ daily is possible.
