PAGE TWO EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 2, 2015
The Parish of Santa Sophia is requesting parishioners who are interested in a new minis-try of Welcome Greeters to attend a Saturday, August 22
meeting at 9:00 am in the Daniels Room. As you know, this ministry plays an important role in help-ing people to worship God by providing assistance to the parish community. Greeters serve as repre-sentatives of the faith community by welcoming those who come to worship, especially visitors. It is an honorable position in the Church, requiring integ-rity, cordiality, and wisdom. A Welcome Greeter must have a true love for the people of the Church and a desire to promote an atmosphere of reverence and worship in the house of God. If your heart de-sires to serve God and the Santa Sophia community through this important ministry, please contact Bill North at [email protected] or Greg Galarpe at [email protected]
The readings today remind us that God continues to care for us and challenges us to trust in His provi-dence and hunger for the Bread of Eternal Lifethe Holy Eucharist. The readings remind us that only God can satisfy our hungerboth spiritual and physical. The first reading shows how God satisfied the physical hunger of His chosen people in the de-sert by giving them manna and quail to eat. The restrictions imposed by God for the collection of manna remind us to humbly acknowledge our total dependence on God to fulfill our needs and to trust
that He will provide for us. In the second reading, St. Paul advises the Ephesians to satisfy their spiritual hunger by turning away from their former evil ways and leading lives of love, kindness, compassion and forgiveness. Paul reminds us that our acceptance of Jesus as the real source of our life and the nourish-ment of our souls calls for a total transformation within us. Having been nourished by the Bread from Heaven and the Word of God, we need to bear wit-ness to Christ by living lives renewed by the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus makes a unique claim: I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst." Here, Jesus is offering Bread from Heaven which nourishes our body and soul and gives us eternal life. This calls for faith and total dependence on God. When Jesus invited those who sought after him for earthly food to accept the Bread of His word and teaching, some accepted it, but others turned away. Those who turned away from Jesus invitation were disappointed, because His invitation required a total commitment which they were unwilling to make.
We all have many needsmaterial and spiritual; we struggle with temptation and sin, we suffer many wounds, we are at war with our passions and demons as we make our pilgrim way through this deserted place, to the Promised Land. The readings remind us that only God can satisfy our needs. The question is: Can He truly free us from our temptations and sins, heal our wounds, and help us to fight off

passions and demons? Can He give us the joy and peace and the salvation and love we so deeply de-sire? We all know that worldly thingsfood, alcohol and drugs, impurity, movies, vacations, sportsoffer us temporary pleasures, but not profound ones, or lasting joy. As St. Thomas Aquinas puts it, Only God satisfies. Likewise, St. Teresa of vila says, God alone suffices. Indeed, just as Jesus healed and fed the needy crowds, by the thousands, superabun-dantlyand all were satisfiedso He does for us by every gift of grace. And, He does so especially by miraculously multiplying the Bread of Life for us: His greatest, most nourishing gift; the Most Blessed Sacrament of His Body and Blood. This Sac-rament unites us perfectly to Him by allowing us to share in His life of love, healing us and raising us upsatisfying us, feeding us in this desert, as we make our pilgrim way to the Promised Land of Heaven. Only the Lord in the Eucharist can satisfy our deep-est hunger and the longing of our hearts. As we thank the Lord for the precious gift of His Body and Blood let us approach the Eucharist with trusting faith. Fr. Devdas

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS
Altar for St. Anne
As we have been reporting in the bulletin, the side al-coves will soon have stained glass windows, thanks to our benefactors. There is an altar needed to raise St. Anne off the floor in the south alcove to match Mary Seat of Wisdom in the north alcove. The north altar was donated by a parishioner whose name is on the me-morial plate at the base of the altar. The hope is to de-sign the same style altar for the south alcove. If anyone is interested in sponsoring this new altar, please contact Fr. Devdas for more details.

PAGE FIVE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 2, 2015
DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way
(especially...) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,
Amen
