BY THE WAY . . . This coming Wednesday is the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord – Christmas. Masses on Christmas Eve will be at 4:00, 4:15 (Auditorium), 6:30 and 10:30 PM. The choir will lead us in a Christmas music program beginning at 10:00 PM. Masses on Christmas morning will be at 8:30 and 10:00 AM, and 12:00 Noon. The Christmas Collection is traditionally the largest collection of the year, and is a major segment of the parish’s annual budget. I invite your generosity in this end-of-the-year collection. Thank you to the Choir, the Children’s Choir, and the School Chamber Singers all of whom helped provide, under the direction of Michael Reidel, a wonderful Lessons and Carols program this past Sunday afternoon. Everyone was in exceptional voice, and the atmosphere was a wonderful Advent moment. Thank you, too, to Deacon Jerry Fadlalla for helping to coordinate the event. Always and everywhere . . . On December 1 Pope Francis paid a visit to the small Umbrian town of Greccio. This community is located in a beautiful hillside forest. Like many small rural Italian towns, Greccio has lots of beauty but a declining population because of the lack of available jobs. Greccio’s claim to fame is that this is the place where, in 1223, Saint Francis of Assisi set up the very first Nativity scene, or presepe. The Holy Father took the occasion of his visit to Greccio to sign an Apostolic Letter, Admirabile Signum, (Wonderful Symbol) on the enduring importance of Nativity creches in Catholic spirituality. The little church in Greccio dates back to the 13th century, and has two side chapels – one dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the other, with 13th centuries frescos, to Saint Anthony of Padua. It must be one of the oldest chapels dedicated to him. Blessing for a Christmas Meal

Lord our God, The coming of your Son brings joy to the whole world. Fill us with your love, And the hungry with good things. Bless our table and home And grant that the food we share Increase our eagerness to serve you in each other. Glory to you, Lord, In the wonder of your presence among us For ever and ever. Amen. A Blessed Christmas to all of you, Father Ray

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14 Ahaz receives from Isaiah a prophecy that he will be successful in war and is urged to ask for a sign that the prophecy is true. The sign is “The virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7 Paul greets the Romans by pointing out that Jesus is the Christ who was promised to them in Scrip-ture. He, Paul, is the apostle favored with the task of spreading the name of Christ to all. Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24 In a brief, straightforward, simple narrative, Mat-thew recounts the events leading to Jesus’ birth. He details the appearance of the angel in a dream to Joseph and stresses that “All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the proph-ets.”

Marvel at the beauty of our church…. We are so lucky to enjoy our beautiful church regularly that we sometimes overlook the stunning splendor of it. Take a moment to admire our magnificent stained-glass windows, unique marble altars, carvings and mosaic work and ponder the spirit of pride our fore fathers had when designing and building this beautiful place of worship. Let us embrace that pride and generosity that inspired our early congregation to invest in such an extensive and unique artistic decorative scheme. Please consider joining the Al LaBarre Memorial “500 Club”. The Club primarily provides funding for major repairs of our building, which in turn, allows us to protect the rare decorative treasures within. If you would like information about the “500 Club” or are interested in making an annual $500 donation for 2019, please contact Cathy Clyne at St. Anthony’s Rectory.
