17th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 27, 2014FIELD OF VISION

King Solomon prays for wisdom. (1 Kings)  All things work for good for those who love God.(Romans) The kingdom is like a treasure. (Matthew)

Imagine you are watching the

action at a roulette table in LasVegas. Suddenly you have avision. The numbers 12, 01,and 33 keep rolling in yourmind, over and over. You pon-der what this means and thenit’s clear. The first two are thetime, 12:01 p.m., and 33 is on

the roulette wheel. At exactly one minute pastnoon, black 33 is going to hit. You could risk a smallbet of $5 and win $175. Or you could go to the ATMand draw all your savings to put on 33 black. To-

day’s gospel is about someone who finds a hugetreasure buried in a field. He goes off and sells eve-rything to buy the field. The point of the story is notabout risking everything on a game of chance (orabout gambling). With God, the odds are always infavor of winning. Those who place all their hope inGod win every time. Trust God and you will receiveendless treasure. -- Dc. Dick Folger

FEEDING EVERY HUNGER

All who are thirsty, come to the water. (Isaiah)

Nothing can separate us from the love of God.(Romans) Jesus feeds the five thousand and there are bas-kets left over. (Matthew)

The miracle of the multiplica-tion of the loaves and fishesends with an important de-tail. There was enough foodleft over to fill 12 wicker bas-kets. In other words, God’s

economy doesn’t just meetour needs, it always gives usmore than enough. If Jesus

had sent the huge crowd to nearby villages to buyfood, they would have faced an entirely differenteconomy, one in which scarcity drives up the price.People would have been hard-pressed to providefor themselves, and there would have been littlesharing. In other words, no miracle. Jesus camethat we might have life, but even more, abundantlife -- Dc. Dick Folger

“REGENERATE(D) 2014” CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

“The same power that raised Jesus Christ from

the dead is in you” (Romans 8:11).Come, live the story!

Everyone, in every age, has the opportunity to livethe story: Jesus’ story. All those who have beenbaptized, from the first to the last, enter the storywith a special role to play at their appointed time. Itis the story that God has prepared beforehand foreach of us -- the only one that will bring joy and pur-pose to our lives. The question is: Are we living thestory? If not, what story are we living? BranchesCatholic Ministries invites you to “Regenerate(d) 2014” Catholic Conference to be held Sep-

tember 27-

28 at the nearby Scotiabank Conven-tion Centre (6815 Stanley Ave.). You may pur-chase tickets through Branches Catholic Books &Gifts or register online at www.go2branches.com

($75 each or $55 “early-bird”). For more infor-mation, call 905/685-7000 or e-mail them.

Besides our own Bishop Gerard Bergie, speakersinclude Jeff Cavins, Michael Coren, Matthew Leon-ard, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Ken Yasinski -- with musicalperformances by Marian Grace and the Glory Col-lective.

THREE O’CLOCK AND ALL IS WELL The Lord’s voice could be heard in the tiny whisper-

ing sound. (1 Kings)

St. Paul grieves for the Jewish people. (Romans) Peter walks on the water until he panics and givesin to doubt. (Matthew)

In today’s gospel, Jesuswalks on the water in themidst of a storm. He comeswhen the disciples are

paralyzed with fear as theirboat is tossed in the thrash-ing sea. This moment iscaptured in the hand-

clapping lyrics of a beloved old hymn:

“Here comes Jesus, see Him walking on the water, He’ll lift you up and He’ll help you to stand; Oh, here comes Jesus, He’s the Master of theWaves that roll. Here comes Jesus, let him take your hand.” If we have the courage of Peter, step out of our rou-tine and walk in faith, then the last line of the songwill be our salvation: “Let him take your hand.” Thenyou can do more than walk on the water. You canlive forever. -- Dc. Dick Folger

WIDENING THE CIRCLEEven foreigners are welcome to the holy mountainof God. (Isaiah) The disobedient may ask for mercy and be saved.(Romans) Jesus heals the foreign woman’s daughter.(Matthew) On the last page of "The Gospel

According to Peanuts," there is adrawing of Charlie Brown receiv-ing a hug from his dog Snoopy.Charlie seems happier than ever, and Snoopy has closed his eyesin devotion. The book’s author, Robert Short, writes: “Be of good cheer, Charlie

Brown! For after all is said anddone, there is someone who

loves you -- and this ‘someone’ is only a very hum-ble, peanutsized representative for one much great-er than he.” Our generous God loves us more than we canknow. In today’s gospel, the Canaanite woman

was wise to invoke the image of grateful dogs shar-ing the scraps from their masters’ tables. Because

of her faith and persistence, Jesus granted herwish. -- Dc. Dick Folger

OUR TESTIMONY OF JESUSI will place the key of the House of David on his

shoulder. (Isaiah)

Who has known the mind of God? (Romans)You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build mychurch. (Matthew)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus saysto Peter, “You are Rock andon this rock I will build mychurch.” With that, Jesushanded over the keys. Whywould God choose Peter, ahard-working fisherman, to bethe boss? Like any of us, Pe-

ter may have loved food, wineand sleep a little too much. He answered the questions in Cesarea Philippi cor-rectly, but he gave the wrong answers three timesbefore the cock crowed. Peter’s job resume didn’tlook all that great. Yet, Jesus chose this regular guyto be the leader. Now, 266 “regular guys” later, we come to PopeFrancis, who has captured our hearts with his hu-mility, love and enthusiasm. Francis is the vicar  of Christ on this earth, snapping selfies with thefaithful and struggling, even as Jesus struggled, to

act as the beloved of God. -- Dc. Dick Folger
