Dr. Scott Scarborough First Forum Speaker of the Year
October 9
On Friday night, October 9th Dr. Scott Scarborough,
the 16th President of the University of Akron, will be our
first Jewish and Public Affairs Forum speaker of the year.
Dr. Scarborough’s talk will focus on “New Directions
for the University.”
A Shabbat dinner will begin at 6:15 PM followed by
Shabbat service at 7:30 PM with Dr. Scarborough’s
presentation at 8:00 PM. There will be an Oneg Shabbat
sponsored by Sisterhood. The Osherow Family Foundation
underwrites the Shabbat dinner.
In his first year Dr. Scarborough has focused on updating
strategic plans for each of the University’s 11 colleges,
strengthening finances, recruiting new university leaders,
and developing institution-wide initiatives to highlight the
University’s historical strengths as a great polytechnic university.
Those initiatives include a National Center for Choreography, Center for Data
Science and Information Technology, Corp of Cadets and Leadership Academy,
Success Coaches for incoming freshmen, and low-cost general education courses
taught in a blended learning format through the University’s Wayne College.
He previously served as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic
Affairs at The University of Toledo since 2012. Scarborough was UT’s Chief
Academic and Operating Officer, responsible for 12 colleges and divisions. He
directed the development of a new five-year strategic plan for the main campus that
emphasized improving academic quality, enhancing academic distinction and
enriching the overall student experience.
From 2010-2012, Scarborough led The University of Toledo Medical Center as
Senior Vice President and Executive Director. During his tenure the medical center
won the Press Ganey "National Success Story of the Year Award" and was named
“Best Hospital in the Region” by U.S. News & World Report.
Before joining Toledo, Scarborough served as executive vice president at DePaul
University, the nation’s largest Catholic university. He was one of DePaul’s top three
executives with oversight of operational divisions ranging from human resources to
information technology to student affairs. Prior to DePaul, Scarborough also served
as: CEO of the Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Co.; vice president for business
affairs at The University of Texas at Tyler; and an audit

Rabbi Reuven Hammer in his
excellent book, “Entering the HD: A
Guide to the History, Prayers and
Themes,” refers to Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur as “opportunities for
change.” These High Holy Days
encompass a period of ten days where
we are afforded a concentrated period of
time for personal introspection. As Rabbi Hammer states in
his book, “It is a time to bring about both personal and
collective change and renewal.” (Hammer, page 98).
This time of year is our moment of truth when we can
right the wrongs of the past. Changing ourselves is never an
easy undertaking since we must first internalize the errors of
our ways and acknowledge that we are in need of change.
Change can be liberating if done with honesty and sincerity.
And, according to the Talmud, a person who is a true
repentant is more beloved by God than the completely
righteous.

Kindness: Love it. Learn it. Live it. Wednesday, September 2, 7:00 PM
Join us as Rabbi Tzvi Muller from Detroit, Michigan leads a workshop on the importance of kindness.
Rabbi Muller is the founder of the “Kindness Project,” a program that was adopted by the JCCA to affirm, renew, and increase the understanding of kindness through arts and cultural programming; to learn what Jewish thought has to say about kindness through its classic teachings, and to help participants perform acts of kindness in their daily lives.
To RSVP, contact Kathy Klein: (330) 835 – 0027
Inclusion and other Educational Values in the Talmud
Thursday, September 3, 7:00 PM Renowned Torah scholar and educator Rabbi Moshe
Berger will discuss the historical roots of the concept of inclusion. Find out what the Talmud (meaning “teach & study”), a central text of rabbinic Judaism, has to say about the worth of every individual. The notion that young children with disabilities and their families are full members of the community reflects societal values that go back thousands of years. Rabbi Berger will explore these traditions and discuss how Rabbinic Judaism can inform the contemporary educational practice of inclusion.
Immediately following the discussion, there will be a viewing of the award-winning documentary “Praying with Lior.” Described by critics as “intimate and involving, fascinating and rather extraordinary,” this portrait of a young man’s coming of age will inspire us all.
To RSVP, contact Kathy Klein: (330) 835 – 0027
Lunch and Learn 2015-2016 For eleven years, Rabbi Grundfast has held a monthly
Lunch and Learn class at the law office of Gary Rosen (11 S. Forge St., Akron, OH 44304). We meet the second Tuesday of each month from 12 noon to 1:00 PM. A variety of subjects have been studied, from business ethics and the Jewish holidays to Pirke Avot and issues of law.
Our first session this year will be on Tuesday, September 9
th and our topic of study for the year will be,
“Walking with Life,” based on the series of adult education publications by The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies of the American Jewish University in Los Angeles.
Each week we will encounter a different subject on the Jewish life cycle with texts from our tradition to be studied and interpreted. Our first topic will be conception and birth.
We would love to have you join us. Lunch is served each week for $11. Please contact Rabbi Grundfast (rabbi@ bethelakron.org or 330.864.2105 x114) for more details.
In Massechet Berachot (34b) it states, “In a place where
penitents (ba-aley Teshuvah) stand, the completely righteous
do not stand.”
The rabbis viewed a person who was a true repentant to
be exalted and emulated. The ba-aley Teshuvah are superior
to the perfectly righteous (tzadikim gemurim) because
though they do sin, their true repentance elevates them to a
level to be admired since the completely righteous never sin
and will never know or understand the healing power of
Teshuvah.
Of course, none of us are tzadikim gemurim and I have a
feeling that the Talmudic rabbis understood this. We are all
flawed and in need of Teshuvah in our lives.
Let this New Year of 5776 be your opportunity for true
and meaningful change so you can become a ba-al Teshuvah.
May I wish each of you and Shanah Tovah U’Metukah –
A Sweet and Good New Year.
Rabbi Grundfast
BULLETIN OF BETH EL CONGREGATION Page 5
Sweet wishes and
blessings for an
awesome New Year!
When you look into
your heart as the year
starts, may you
discover a new belief
in the gifts you have
to share, a new connection to the
people around you and a renewed
commitment to your faith and your
dreams. May the New Year bring you
and your family health, happiness, and
laughter.
As the Holidays approach,
activities abound at Beth El.
Preparation for services is complete
after months of effort by Rabbi
Grundfast, David Wolinsky, our guest
cantor, and a dozen volunteer
congregants. Also, an original cantata
on the second day of Rosh Hashanah
will be an exciting complement to
services. All of the behind the scenes
effort organized by Erin Katz Ford
parallels that of preparing for a
wedding for over 400 guests five times
– Erev Rosh Hashanah, first and
second day of Rosh Hashanah, Kol
Nidrei, and Yom Kippur Day.
Even as High Holiday plans are a
focus, many other initiatives are under
way. A new easily affordable kiddush
sponsorship policy for up to 50 people
was recently approved by the Board
to make your simcha special. Choose
one of the sponsorship options:
Nibbles which includes pastry, fruit,
hummus or choose Kiddush 1 or
Kiddush 2 which include Nibbles plus
an assortment of added optional
goodies and an optional lox platter.
We have established a Beth El
Kiddush Club fund to defray
overhead costs of a kiddush and to
cover the cost of a non-sponsored
kiddush. Beth El will provide challah,
herring, gefilte fish, tablecloths and
set up. A $50 annual donation is
requested to become a member. So
please contact the office, sponsor a
kiddush and join our Kiddush Club –
it's a mitzvah.
The project of updating the
congregation's Bylaws is under way
through the guidance of Marty
Belsky. Comments by the Board and
congregants are being solicited and a
meeting will be scheduled to review
the input. Hopefully the process can
be completed by years end. With the
previous approval of our new
constitution, the Bylaws add more
definition to our governance.
The Education Committee under
the guidance of Ellen Moss has
planned a full year of activities. These
programs include a joint program that
begins with Jewish Family Service to
celebrate Veterans' Day on November
8 and a featured lecture on November
22 by Rabbi Reuven Hammer, former
Beth El rabbi and prominent leader in
the Conservative movement in Israel.
We anticipate an exciting and
successful Hebrew school year thanks
to the efforts of Rabbi Grundfast, Erin
Katz Ford and our experienced
educators.
We are thankful for your
congregational involvement, support,
creativity and generosity. We remain a
strong family growing Jewishly. May
you and your loved ones be inscribed
in the Book of Life, Health and
Prosperity.

Beth El’s wonderful family tradition of performing
Taschlich on Rosh Hashanah will commence promptly at 4
pm on Monday, September 14.
We will gather at Fort Island Park’s small bridge
walkway. Everyone can symbolically cast their sins into the
creek with breadcrumbs during a very short family oriented
service.
There is ample parking adjacent to the walkway leading
to the creek. Children can enjoy nearby swings after the short
ten-minute service. Bring your friends and other family
members this year! Turn on Trunko from West Market Street
and continue until you reach the park on the left side of the
street. Breadcrumbs will be provided or bring your own.
Weather forecast for that afternoon is sunny and glorious!

Got Shabbat Shalom everybody! Beth El's Mini
Minyans are musical, interactive
and fun services designed for our
youngest Jews (typically ages 0-6)
and the grownups who love them!
Led by Becca Moskovitz, a licensed
Music Together teacher, pediatric
Speech-Language Pathologist and
Mommy, these 45 minute services
are sure to bring a smile to the faces
of all who attend.
Each week families sing and move to
familiar songs highlighting important
parts of the Shabbat service, as well as selected themes related
to weekly parsha or nearby holidays. This year's Mini Minyans
are scheduled to start around 10am inside the chapel so that the
children can be participants in the beginning of the Torah
Service. Once the Torah procession is over, our Mini Minyan-
goers will head out to our own quiet area and celebrate Shabbat
mini-style! Our first service of the season will occur on October
3. After the service, we will partake in congregational Kiddush
and/or theme related goodies. RSVPs are welcome to:
[email protected], but are not necessary. Family and
friends always welcome! Typically Mini Minyans are held the
first Saturday of the month, however subject to change.
