THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8, 2013
Prelude "On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's Cry" K. Langlois Welcome and Announcements
Confession and Forgiveness
P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from
our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess
our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior
and Lord.
C: Amen
P: You may kneel for confession. Most merciful God,
C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have
left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our
neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen
P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake
God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ,
and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen

The Apostles’ Creed - Page 105
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died
and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he
ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

A shoot shall come out from the stumpofJesse,
and a branch shall grow out ofhis roots.2The spirit of the Lono shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,the spirit of counsel and might,the spirit ofknowledge and the fear of
the Lono.sHis delight shall be in the fear of the Lorn.
He shall notjudge by what his eyes see,or decide by what his ears hear;
abut with righteousness he shalljudgethe poor,
and decide with equity for the meek ofthe earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod ofhis mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall killthe wicked.
5Righteousness shall be the belt aroundhis waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
Psalm
6The wolf shall live with the lamb,the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,and a little child shall lead them.
TThe cow and the bear shall graze,their young shall lie down together;and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8The nursing child shall play over the hole ofthe asp,
and the weaned child shall put its handon the adder's den.
eThey will not hurt or destroy on all my holymountain;
for the earth will be full of the knowledge ofthe Lono
as the waters cover the sea.
IoOn that day the root ofJesse shall stand as asignal to the peoples; the nations shall inquireof him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.
Psalm 72:1-7,'18-19; tone 8

Romans 15:4-13
Whatever was written in former davs was writ-ten for our instruction, so that by steadfast-ness and by the encouragement of the scrip-tures we might have hope. sMay the God ofsteadfastness and encouragement grant youto live in harmony with one another, in accor-dance with ChristJesus, 6so that together youmaywith one voice glorify the God and.Fatherof our LordJesus Christ.
\lV'elcome one another, therefore, justas Christ has welcomed you, for the glory ofGod. 8For I tell you that Christ has become aservant of the circumcised on behalf of thetruth of God in order that he might confirmthe promises given to the patriarchs, eand inorder that the Gentiles might glorify God for
Gospel
his mercy. As it is written,"Therefore I will confess you among the
Gentiles,and sing praises to your name";
roand again he says,"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people";
rrand again,"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,and let all the peoples praise him";
t2and again Isaiah says,"The root ofJesse shall come,
the one who rises to rule the Gentiles;in him the Gentiles shall hope."
'3May the God of hope fill you with alljoy andpeace in believing, so that you may abound inhope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:1-12
In those daysJohn the Baptist appeared inthe wilderness ofJudea, proclaiming, 2"Re-
pent, for the kingdom of heaven has comenear." sThis is the one of whom the prophetIsaiah spoke when he said,
"The voice ofone crying out inthe wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord,make his paths straight."'
aNowJohn wore clothing of camel's hair witha leather belt around his waist, and his foodwas locusts and wild honey. sThen the peopleofJerusalem and allJudea were going ouf tohim, and all the region along theJordan, 6and
theywere baptized by him in the riverJordan,confessing their sins.
TBut when he saw many Pharisees andSadducees coming for baptism, he said to
them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned youto flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruitworthy of repentance. eDo not presume tosay to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as ourancestor'; for I tell you, God is able fromthese stones to raise up children to Abraham.loEven now the ax is lying at the root of thetrees; every tree therefore that does not beargood fruit is cut down and thrown into thefire.
tt'I baptize you with water for repentance,but one who is more powerful than I is com-ing after me; I am not worthy to carry his san-dals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spiritand fire. r2His winnowing fork is in his hand,and he will clear his threshing floor and willgather his wheat into the granary; but thechaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

‘Tis the Season for Giving
The tags were hung on the Giving Tree with care, in hopes that FELC elves soon would be there…
Please take a tag (or two!) from The Giving Tree and make a needy child’s Christmas special. Or, make a
donation toward food baskets or gift cards for turkeys. Together, we’re helping bring holiday cheer to 118 children — 40 families — at Immanuel Lutheran.
All wrapped gifts need to be back under the tree by Sunday, December 15th with the tag attached.
Thank you, FELC elves!! Remember ‘tis better to give
than to receive!!
