Dear EFF’iesSomehow Vlieg could not else but notice that you do not really like white people, es-pecially Afrikaans white people. Your recent litt le minor inconveniencing of a few univer-sity campuses and remarks and statements by some of yourselves in this process might have tipped Vlieg off .

Vlieg would like to tell you a litt le story. Unfortunately, it is not a fi ctional story, but based on true events. Parental guidance is not advised and it is suitable for readers of all ages.

Vlieg is a middle aged white Afrikaans man. Vlieg grew up, what you will call being privileged. His rights and privileges were protected by the government of that day. Vlieg’s parents were not rich, nor were they poor; a typical middleclass white family of the nineteen seventies and eighties. Vlieg’s father worked in the same salaried job for many years, providing for his family to the best of his ability. Vlieg’s mother had to start working too, as Vlieg and his siblings grew up and were in need of expensive tertiary educations. Vlieg went to good Afrikaans schools and eventually to what was then an Afrikaans university. As was the norm at the time, Vlieg too had to take a student loan from a bank to pay for his tuition and accommodation, while his parents had to work hard to cover the rest of the expenses. The same went for his siblings.

At school, Vlieg and everyone else at the time, were introduced to the military, and taught how to prepare for just about any-thing that the Swart Gevaar could throw at them. Vlieg was also invited to leadership conferences, some hosted by the National Party, others just generic courses. During that time, the mid-eighties, Vlieg and most of his peers at the time became aware of what was going on in the country and the world. Vlieg did not have to do military ser-vice, as it was abolished at about the same time that he graduated from varsity.

During his time at varsity, Vlieg and his peers got more aware and growingly un-easy with the situation in the country at the time. Vlieg became involved in student pol-itics, and together with the majority of his generation realised that they diff ered from the teach-ings of their parents and grandparents. During that time the National Party started to display some lateral thinking of change. For all of his sins, Vlieg decided to stay and work within the National Party, for it was clear that the Nats were going to steer the country out of the ruins of the policies of the time, to a free and democratic one. Change with-in the National Party also did not happen because the President of the time had a Da-mascus moment. It happened because the supporters of the party grew impatient with the situation in the country and pressured for change. Yes, it did help that there was a struggle being fought by black people, and the international community pressured the government, but it was the support within the National Party that brought the party to make changes.

The white youth of the time had their own struggle. They read Die Vrye Weekblad, Max du Preez’s anti-establishment and an-ti-apartheid newspaper, they listened to their own struggle music by Johannes Kerk-orrel and Koos Kombuis, challenging the Nats on their policies. They canvassed for a Yes-vote in the 1992 referendum to fi nally bring about change. It too wasn’t easy. They were oft en labelled K…..boeties and the like by their conservative friends and family.

But the majority prevailed, and change came about. The ANC and whichever oth-er freedom fi ghters can boast all they want about how they destroyed apartheid, it’s fi ne. The white youth and other white peo-ple with common sense at that time had just

as big a role in the establishment of a new South Africa. This is the part that you most likely did not know, or have never thought about, and will unfortunately also never be

part of the history teachings in this country’s future.

Where the whites did go wrong, in Vlieg’s opinion, was

the day they walked out of the Government of Na-tional Unity, fi rst led in there by FW de Klerk un-

der mandate of those who supported him, but led out there for-saking this country. You would also not have thought about this before, but that

was the day that this democracy collapsed. From that day onwards, the ANC had carte blanche to do as they pleased.

The collapse of this country did not start with Verwoerd, Botha or De Klerk. It start-ed with the ANC. You, as the EFF’ies, have made the same mistake as the Nats. You have walked out of the engine room where you could have made a diff erence from within the ANC. Now, especially with your loud voices and destructive propagan-da, you have marginalised yourselves and thrown yourself out in the political desert, together with the whites. Initially you were entertaining, then you became somewhat of an embarrassment, but now you are out-right irritating.

You have missed the boat, wasted your op-portunities and are now blaming the wrong people for your own shortcomings. You might as well give up and go home, you will achieve nothing but only cause more chaos and hatred.

Vlieg’s generation is now the parents of the students at varsities that you are busy dis-rupting.

Now, will you please be so kind as to bug-ger off so that our kids can study!Regards,Vlieg

Impact of electionsImpact of Local Government Elections on the budget cycle of local municipalities 2016/17 • Part 4 (final)

We continue to discuss important issues from the MFMA circular No 78, issued by the Na-tional Treasury and called the “Municipal Budget Circular for the 2016/17 MTREF” to maintain fi nancial sustainability. This article looks at the proposed strategy for the smooth handover to the new council.

We must remember that the IDP is a fi ve year strategic document and is the responsibility of the current council (elected councillors). The norm has been that the fi rst year of such a new council, the council is primarily con-fi ned to implementing the last adopted IDP. It is only in the second year aft er the election

that the new council will adopt its new IDP and budget. Note that the time frame might diff er from the “Time Schedule of Key Deadlines”. To allow this handover process to run smoothly, National Treasury proposed:

Outgoing council approves 2016/17 budget

1. Current Major prepares a budget schedule that brings the review of the IDP and the tabling of the budget to late February or the be- ginning of March 2016;2. Community consultations on the annual budget conducted in the remainder of March and early April 2016;3. Offi cials complete technical work on annual budget by mid-April 2016;4. Current council approves annual budget and reviewed IDP before the end of April 2016; and5. Council implements annual budget from 1 July 2016.

the budget. The articles were compiled and submitted by Ms Marie Helm (photo),

For the Geldenhuys family from Tzaneen, the start of the new year was a melancholy experience. Three weeks be-fore the birth of their twin additions to the family, Ilona and Darius Geldenhuys were told that their three-yea- old daughter, Imke, was diag-nosed with Neuroblastoma.

This is rare nerve cell cancer aff ecting young children and infants. It oft en begins in the adrenal glands above the kid-neys, and can spread to oth-er areas of the body such as bone marrow, lymph nodes, liver and skin. The chemo therapy litt le Imke has to undergo is extreme-ly costly and is performed at Unitas Hospital

in Centurion. Although the family has medical aid cover,

the co-payments and other expenses such as care for their newborn twin girls and the weekly travel to and from Centurion are a massive bur-den. Since the news broke over social media, many organizations within Tzaneen and the surrounding areas, have joined hands in both prayer and active fund raising eff orts, to support the family and Imke as they face the terrible ordeal.

Last week, the litt le ones from Tza-neen pre-primary school (SAVF), along with their teachers dedicated an entire Friday to show their support to the

friend they have all been missing on the play-grounds. It was heart warming to watch all the

litt le ones gather in prayer, all dressed in red, all brandishing a pink cupcake and every one of them hopeful for her full recovery.

The cupcakes were part of the “Cupcakes for Imke” initiative started by Chantelle de Car-valho on behalf of OK Minimark in Tzaneen. Literally thousands of cupcakes were baked, packed and shipped to various companies throughout the province, including destina-tions as far as Klerksdorp and Polokwane. All the ingredients used to bake the cupcakes were sponsored by Sugar Hill and Sugar Loaf under the banner of OK Minimarket Tzaneen.

The funds raised through the sale of the cupcakes will be donated to the Geldenhuys family. “At this stage we don’t have a fi nal fi g-ure yet as we are still receiving orders from companies and individuals who want to be a part of this movement. We will only know

how much money we have raised in total, by this (Friday) aft ernoon, but so far we are in the region of around R40 000,” said Chantelle.

For those wanting to become involved in helping the Geldenhuys family, or wishing to off er words of encouragement, feel free to follow Imke on her journey over social media by liking the page “Gebede vir Imke”.

“We started the initiative with Bul-letin last week and since then have received numerous nominations via e-mail which we have listed on our surprise calendar.

We invite everyone in the Tzaneen

community to nominate their col-leagues, classmates, team members or any other community group to burger busted by the Misty River Spur team,” said Riaan Heine of Misty River Spur.

Those interested in nominating their business or group, visit the Misty River Spur Facebook page, click like, and send through your nominations.

To those who are secretly on the list, be vigilant, as you never know who might come knocking at your door this week.

Is my info veilig?Yvonne du Toit van Tza-neen skryf per e-pos: Ek

ontvang al geruime tyd gereeld die volgende sms: “Tzaneen has hand-

ed you over to Zan-dile-MS for collection of outstanding debt call Avela on 087 503 757 to-day to avoid electricity/water disconnection.”Ek het nog nooit ‘n re-kening van enige aard by die Greater Tzaneen Mu-nisipaliteit of enige ander munisipaliteit gehad nie. Hierdie mense het ook my ID nommer.

Daar word gereeld radio-praatjies gehou oor hoe jy jou persoonlike inligting moet beskerm. Hoe het

hulle my telefoonnommer bekom? Waar kom hierdie mense aan my persoonlike inligting?

As ek nou weer ‘n sms, oproep of enigiets an-ders oor hierdie saak ontvang, gaan ek ‘n saak van teistering open.

Helpende Hand benodig

helpende hande

With all the upheaval at the Universi-ties, I wonder where we as Christians fi t into the picture. Are we doing enough? What about the parents of those who are perpetrating all the upheaval, where do they fi t into the picture?

Surely they, just as we should take a stand. We criticize all the time from the safety of our arm chairs, so should we become militant? Go out and demonstrate and do exactly what the others out there are doing?

No we should all come together and pray, pray into the sit-uation, pray for good leadership, pray for those confused stu-dents and ask God to intervene. We oft en get together to pray for rain and most of the times these functions are reasonably at-tended and when God answers our prayers we fail to give Him thanks. When a call goes out to hold a prayer hour to thank God for His blessings very few att end.

Is this because we expect God to give us what we ask for and just leave it like that? We as Christians should obey God’s com-mandments to us and the fi rst two commandments are what all the others are based on: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your soul and You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

Now the fi rst command means also honouring God in all things and that means also to give Him thanks for His many blessings to us all. This all takes faith, which oft en is lacking when we see what our fellow humans are doing to each other. Strengthening your faith is the most important value in life.

Build up your faith in God and His many mercies by being true servants to all you come in contact with. We have all been through many trials and tribulations and many more are yet to come, but with God on our side what should we fear? Trust in Him and do not blame Him for everything that goes wrong with you. We are all human and oft en follow our own hearts, oft en to our detriment, therefore we need to reach out to God and to others and build these relationships.

Forgiveness is the key to all this, coming along side those who are in trouble, those in need and spreading the Gospel of Christ to others in our deeds and ways. You don’t need to be a pastor to do this, all you need is faith in Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Use your God given talents for the improvement of all. As I have said numerous times pray is the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal, use it.

South Africa trades 1,6 million kilograms of mopane worms annually and dried mopane worms have become a multimillion-rand industry. The principal producers are Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and the South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

in Zimbabwe as well as most parts of southern Africa. They are a staple diet in rural areas and

are considered a delicacy in the cities. They can be eaten dry, as crunchy as potato

chips, or cooked and drenched in sauce. The worms, cooked together with marog (the African wild spinach), onions and tomatoes, taste like mince with a leafy back bite. There are sev-eral recipes including one where the

worms are dipped in honey and braa-ied to taste like chicken. They can also

be cooked in a spicy or peanut butt er sauce and served with pap.

Mopane worms are highly nutritious and pack in more protein per gram than beef. The worm is the large caterpillar of the Gonimbrasia belina species, called the emperor moth. It is known as a mopane worm because it is found chomping the leaves of mopane trees aft er it hatches in summer.

Ask the former veteran principal of Maru-mofase Full Service School, Mr George Ramodike, how climate conditions have changed over the years for the farmers in the fi elds of rural areas. He does not need to stretch his memory far to fi nd the answer.

“Scanty rains and drought are things that started recently,” he said. “The extreme weather conditions which just hit the country are increasingly aff ecting Tzaneen.”

The residents of Moime struggle with poverty, high HIV infection rates and unemployment. Declining harvests due to the combination of inadequate production practices and the im-pact of climate change are compounding the area’s problems, pushing many rural commu-nities further into food and nutrition insecurity.

The Mmathakana Family Gardening project is managed in the heart of Thabina in Moime village, with the mott o “Phela o lema” —

meaning live and plough. The garden aims to improve food security and the diets of the most vulnerable.

“My main problem is households where nobody in the family is working. Our home garden really helped us because we can grow vegetables for longer, even when drought has hit severely. The garden is improving and the plants are well nourished. Spinach is espe-cially good because it grows all year round,”

Ramodike explained.“The challenge is to eliminate hunger and

this is not a challenge that can be accom-plished by an individual working in isola-tion,” said Ramodike

The annual Marula Festival in Phalaborwa started as a gov-ernment event where people took part for the sake of test-ing the marula beer. Their first try out was attended by 120 people at Muti Wa Vatsonga, and thereafter they moved the event to a more accessible place — as people showed more and more interest in it.

The festival, which was hosted by the Department of Eco-nomic Development, Environment and Tourism in Limpopo (LEDET), did not only offer entertainment but uplifted the economy of Mopani and Limpopo as a whole.

Artists for the 2016 festival included the famous Lira, Zonke, Tshepo Tshola, Judith Sephuma, Sfiso Ncwane, Dr. Thomas Chauke, Malatjie, Khuthane, Magilo, Foster and Zozo, to mention but a few.

More than 14 000 people attended both open-air concerts which were staged over the two weekends of the festival. Thirteen cooperatives under Mukumbi Industries brewed 12

000 litres of Marula beverage, which was consumed by the public during the festival at an agreed fee per litre.

Phalaborwa also recorded full occupan-cy in the accommodation sector for both weekends of the festival.

“The Marula Festival is an annual festival that takes place during the marula season. It has now celebrated its tenth year. It is a festival that is centered around the maru-la fruit and whereby we create economic opportunities and entertainment around the fruit,” LEDET spokesperson Tlhekeng Kgatla said.

Most artists per-formed under pressure because of the musical in-struments that kept on jamming every now and then, and the artists were forced to improvise. When Tshepo Tshola was about to per-form his first song the microphones just stopped and he and his team members started dancing, in order to cover up the embarrassing moments.

“What annoyed me was the fact that the event appeared to be not well organ-ised. The sound system did not work properly. When Winnie Mashaba per-

formed, the microphones kept on cutting out and that made her to perform under pressure. We, her fans, could not enjoy her performance as much as we had hoped”, Justice Maila said.

Themba Chauke said, “I am disappointed with the attend-ance; I know that people of the area and surrounding areas always come in numbers for the event but now I don’t under-stand why today the numbers have dropped”.

“I would love to see more local artists being part of the event in the future, because it seems like now organisers are being misguided”.

The festival hosted dignitaries from Mozambique, Namibia, Cuba, Venezuela, including international media which cov-ered the festival; their work will be broadcasted in countries such as Cuba and Latin America.

A 6-year-old boy was shocked to death by electricity cables in Xihoko Village outside Tzaneen, while playing with his friends.

It is said that when his friends saw what had happenedand that he didn’t move, they quickly rushed to his parents’ house to inform them of the incident. The parents and mem-bers of the community rushed to the scene, immediately realised that it was serious and took him to the nearest clinic. He was, how-ever, declared dead upon arrival.

Eskom officials visited schools and crèches

around the area last week, where their main aim was to educate pupils on the dangers of electricity. The children were warned never to touch cables that are lying in the streets or veld or even at home. They continued saying that if the children experience any problems regarding electricity they should call an adult to inspect the problem. “Don’t ever go any-where near electrical cables, no matter what the circumstance might be,” the Eskom offi-cial warned.

Ms Truida Jensen (67) from Flo-ra Park in Tzaneen says her hero is the late Mr Chris Muller from Paint Pot in Tzaneen. He and his wife Lana persuaded Jensen not to spend R4 000 on a car eight-een years ago, but to rather buy a stand for R28 000 in Flora Park and build a home. At that stage Jensen was divorced with four children. She worked for Paint Pot for eight years.

After she left their employ-ment, fifteen years ago, she be-

gan baking and looking for other means to maintain her pride-and-joy home that’s now fully paid off.

Jensen’s grandfather bought a farm at Veekraal in the Hae-nertsburg area in 1884. Her brother, Mr Martiens van Schalkwyk, still lives there. She was the first intake of pupils at Haenertsburg Primary School when it opened in 1955. There-after she went to Pietersburg High School.

Both Jensen’s mother and grandmother were excellent bakers, so she learnt from the best. She bakes big cakes, sausage rolls and cook-ies and sells to Park Butchery and Sugar Loaf. She proudly tells of the time she baked 275 cakes for Food Lovers in one month in 2014. She reminisces about her one and only trusty helper, who she called Ou Mielie, who died three years ago. She used to get up at 02:00 to bake as it’s not so hot at that time of the early morning, but she is now taking things a little easier.

Jensen relates how, singlehanded-ly, she baked sixty fruitcakes, at R250 each, for Christ-mas last year. She adds brandy and Van der Hum. The latter is the secret, as Van der Hum is fruity and combines nicely with the fruitcake. She also baked 600 cupcakes in one go last year. Besides baking she can also prepare a slap up meal for functions for up to 200 people.

She had skin cancer years ago and is now in remission. She also recently fell and broke a pelvic bone in two places. A tad depressed,

she soldiered on and, with the help of her faith she is now fit, hale and hearty. Her other passions, that also yield an income, are propagating cy-cads (revoluta spe-cies) and clivia and she breeds guinea fowl.

Proudly she points out her two solar panels. These she installed from the sale of a few doz-en guinea fowl. All her proceeds go on home maintenance but she’s equally proud of her four children and eleven grandchildren who all live in Limpopo.

Her granddaughter is the well-known Ms Katryn Barwise from Polokwane who spends one night a week with her grandmother when she comes to take care of one of her modeling

centres in Tzaneen. Barwise, who is currently Miss World Humanity, is flying to Barbados next month to relinquish her crown to her successor.

Look out for these signs of cancer

Cancer can be a diffi cult and emotive subject. However, evi-dence shows that if we increase eff orts to encourage earlier di-agnosis of cancer, it will save lives. By increasing your own awareness of cancer symptoms and screening programmes, you can share this knowledge with colleagues, friends and family.

Knowing the key symptoms of common cancers can help you to know what is worth get-

ting checked out, just in case. Changes in the body are the best indicator of something not being right. Compare what you might be feeling now with how you normally feel. Some of the symptoms of common can-cers include:A persistent cough which lasts for longer than three weeksA change in stools that lasts longer than a monthAny unusual lumpsDi culty in passing urine

Unexplained weight lossChanges to moles or frecklesUnexplained pain or bleeding

Talking about cancer makes a big diff erence. When people feel more comfortable discuss-ing cancer, they are more likely to seek help when it’s needed.

On Sunday morning a lady between the ages of 26 and 29 took her VW polo to a car wash in Xihoko village, to have it washed. She had planned to collect it af-ter att ending a church service.

However, she never expected the car washer to take her car for a drive with-out her permission. He lost control of the vehicle and the car was badly scratched on the one side. Fortunately a man who witnessed the scene questioned the driv-er and sensed that something fi shy was going on. He took the car’s registration number and quickly traced the owner. It is also alleged that the owner of the car

wash begged the owner of the car not to involve the police. He undertook to pay all costs for repairing the vehicle.

A similar incident was experienced in Runnymede outside N’wamitwa on Thursday. A woman left her car in the care of a car washer, but again some-body decided to test drive the car with-out the consent of the owner. He nar-rowly escaped an accident.

People now wonder if they should take out special insurance before leav-ing their vehicle at a car wash.

The lowlife of Tzaneen has, for years, used the neglected gardens surrounding the Post Offi ce for its nefarious deeds. Men would uri-nate and defecate over the fence into the gardens.

Hence the foul smells that per-vaded the post box area. People would hide their stolen goods in the gardens at night as well as hide and sleep there.

Last week contractors started to clear the gardens, chop down all trees and shrubs and trim the large

and old cycads of its leaves. It is hoped that this will stop the va-grants from abusing the area.

The Post Offi ce front glass door still has to be repaired. A customer was angered at having to queue for a long time only to fi nd he needed a utility bill to renew his driver’s licence. He was so angry at the wasted time that he punched and broke the door before roaring off in his white bakkie.

Rotary Haenertsburg and Mahindra Polokwane recently joined hands in lightening up the lives of matric pupils at two local rural schools. Rota-ry SA and Mahindra SA initiated a programme to help pupils study day and night to achieve good results. Each pupil was given a solar powered lamp and a pencil case with stationery. Haenerts-burg Rotary President, Ms Maria da Silva, told pupils at Makome High School in Segwashe, and

Magaedisha High School in Ga-Molepo about the history and aims of Rotary. Mahindra Polokwane Manager, Mr ZC Hattingh, then explained how the lamps work, told pupils about Mahindra and encouraged them to work hard to achieve their goals. The chairperson of the LCR at each school thanked Mahindra and Rotary. Seen in the photo are pupils and staff of Magaedisha High School with members of Rotary and Mahindra.

Georges Valley is gearing up for the popular 4x4 event on 18 June, aft er skipping two years in a row due to unforeseen circumstances.

The chairman of the Georges Valley Farm-ers Association, Mr Anton Venter, said this year’s presentation will diff er slightly in for-mat from the previous events, but he promises it to be just as fun-fi lled as in the past.

They have done away with the formal 4x4 route by creating an obstacle course for the main competitors at The Hub. A spe-cial 4x4 trail and scenic route will be created for the general public in their four track vehi-cles, while a mud pool on the premises will give access for the younger generation.

The day’s activities will end with a big “jol” on the music of Michael Ferguson and his

band until late. He is the son of Fergie Fer-guson, well-known musician from the pop-ular group Ballyhoo.

Venter said they are busy updating their website and more detail about the event will be posted on the website soon.

The first Modjadjiskloof Bowls Club’s first five-week Barefoot Business League Tournament was completed last week and the participants agreed that it was a great fun event.

The twelve participating teams were split into two sections, namely Open and Plate, accord-ing to their overall point stand-ings from the fourth week.

Every team played a round of eight ends, and the top two teams after eight ends, went through to play a final of six ends. Points were awarded on a skins basis of one point per end with two points for a win.

Crazy Singles and Trophy Toyota (Downstairs) competed fiercely in the Open section final, where after five ends Tro-phy had three skins (but only three shot points) and Crazy Singles had two skins (but four shot points).

With one end to go, it came down to a close measure for shot bowl. Had Trophy picked it up they would have peeled the game but won on skins! Luckily for Crazy Singles the meas-ure was in their favour so they picked up three skin points

and two points for the win, making them the champi-ons with five points versus three and winning the Frank “Pops” Lavis Trophy!

Trophy Toyota (Upstairs) took third place in the Open. Klofies and Rangers con-tested the Plate Finals, and congratulations go to Klofies for winning the Plate. Locals came in at third place in the Plate.

The Wooden Spoon award went to Lowveld Labels Team

2, who got wooden spoons and a booklet on “How to im-prove your Bowls”.

The next Business League is planned for August/September 2016.

Teams that supported the first Business League for 2016 were: Crazy Singles, Klofies, Label Pro, Locals, Lowveld La-bels 1, Lowveld Labels 2, Mike’s Electrical, Overland Liquors, Rangers, Trophy Toyota Downstairs, Trophy Toyota Upstairs and ZZ2.

First Place Plate Team Klofies members were Martin Havenga, Hennie Greyling, Elri Verster and Jaco Verster.

More than seventy teenage boys who are part of Bolobedu Delop-ment Soccer Club and who are from disadvantaged backgrounds ask for donations in the form of transport, soccer kits, whistles and markers for the boys aged 11 and younger.

The club (known as Boldev) is cur-rently managed by Marcus Nakene who is also the coach. Sakkie Sesho-ka is the assistant coach.

The programme started early last year, when Nakene (the founder) saw teen-age boys fighting while he was waiting at a local car wash. “I called them and said to

them, because you have nothing to do, please look for boys of your age and come back with their names — and that’s how Boldev started. In the beginning the club had seventeen members and now it has grown to seventy,” said Nakene.

The Modjadji Royal Council gave them a helping hand by donating thirty soccer boots. On 13 Febru-ary the club’s u.13 and u.15 teams played against Tshepo Academy at

gekanselleer is.

— Martin Luther King Jr
