If cylinders require modications, these modicationsmust be done at company locations or by The Company's certiedfacilities.TheCylinderDivisionEngineeringDepartmentmustbenotied in the event of a mechanical fracture or permanent deforma -tionofanycylindercomponent(excludingseals).Thisincludesabrokenpistonrod,tierod,mountingaccessoryoranyothercylindercomponent. The notication should include all operation and applica-tiondetails.Thisinformationwillbeusedtoprovideanengineeredrepairthatwillpreventrecurrenceofthefailure.
Itisallowedtodisassemblecylindersforthepurposeofreplacingsealsorsealassemblies.However,thisworkmustbedonebystrictlyfollowingalltheinstructionsprovidedinthisbulletin.
AlthoughParkerHydraulicCylindersaredesignedtomakeon-sitemaintenanceorrepairsaseasyaspossible,someoperationscan
only be carried out in our factory. It is standard policy to t a cylinderreturnedtothefactoryforrepairwiththosereplacementpartswhicharenecessarytoreturnitto‘asgoodasnew’condition.Shouldtheconditionofthereturnedcylinderbesuchthatrepairwouldbeuneco-nomical, you will be notied.
Thepistonissealedandsecurelylockedtothepistonrodwithanaer-obicadhesive.ThisthreadedconnectionisONLYtobediassembledorreassembledbyfactorytrainedpersonnel.
WARNING:Somecylinderscontainheavilyloadedsprings.Improperdisassemblyofthesecylinderscancauseseverebodilyinjuryordeath.AlwaysdisassembleacylindercontainingaspringbyfollowingtheinstructionsinBulletin0805-G-TSD-1.
Afterthecylinderhasbeendisassembled,carefullyremovethesealsthatwillbereplacedtoavoiddamaginggroovesurfaces.Carefullycleanallparts.
Sealswillbeeasiertoinstalliftheyarelubricated.Alwayslubricatesealsandothercomponentsofahydrauliccylinderwiththeoperat-ing uid. Pneumatically operated cylinders should be lubricated withLub-A-Cyl. Neither hydraulic nor pneumatic cylinders tted with Class3seals(EPR)canbelubricatedoroperatedwithpetroleumbasedproducts.
Servicing Piston SealsThecylinderboreandpistonmustbecloselyexaminedforsignsofscoring.Ifeitherthecylinderbodyorpistonisdamagedtheymustbereplaced.
Whenacylinderisoverhauled,anewsetofpistonsealsisrequired.ItisalsorecommendedthatthecylinderbereassembledwithnewcylinderbodyO-rings.Allpistonsealkitscontainpistonsealsaswell
astwocylinderbodyO-rings(47)andfor7and8inchborehydrauliccylinders,theirmatingback-upwashers(26).

ApplylubricanttothepistonODandallgrooves.Installonepistonsealinthegroovenearesttherod.Thetwo‘lips’ofthisLipsealshouldfacetowardtherodendofthepiston.Installtheback-upwasherinthesamegrooveoppositethe'lips'oftheseal.LubricatethecylinderbodyIDandinsertthepiston–capend rst – into the cylinder body as shown.
Next,turnthecylinderbodyonitssideandpushthepistonthroughthetubejustfarenoughtoexposethegrooveforthesecondseal.Now,installthesecondLipsealandback-upwasherintheexposedgroovewiththetwo‘lips’facingawayfromtherod.Ifthepistonhasagrooveforawearring,installthewearringinthegrooveandlubricatethewearringOD.Thenpullthepistonintothecylinderbody.
Hi-Load Piston
KitsforHi-LoadpistonscontaintwosetsofsealsforSeries2Hand2HDcylinders,andfor1½"-6"boreSeriesHDcylinders.TheycontainonesetofsealsforSeries3Hand3HDcylinders,andfor7"-8"boreSeriesHDandVHcylinders.Eachsealsetincludes one lled PTFE sealing ring (119) and an elastomericenergizingring(120).Thekitalsocontainstwowearrings.(121).Installtheinnerenergizingring(s)inthesealgroove(s).
Installthewearringsinthetwogroovesoneachendofthe piston. Stretch the PTFE seal ring(s) by hand until it tsoverthewearring.Pushtheouterring(s)overthewearringandintothesealgroove(s).Withtheouterring(s)inthegroove(s),compressthemwitharingcompressor.Alterna-tively,thePTFEringscanbecompressedusingalargehoseclampoverthinshimstock.Inallcases,takecarenottodamagethesealingring(s).Keepthesealingring(s)compressedforsometimebeforeinsertingthepistonintothebody.AstartingsleevehavinganIDthesamesizeasthe
cylinderbore,andtaperedatoneend,willaidtheinstallationprocess.
Cast Iron Piston RingsKitsforcastironpistonringscontainfourrings(48).Most3LSeriescylindersuseonlythreeringsandinsomelargersizes,onlytwo.Allotherseriescylindersusefourrings.
Ironpistonringsseldomneedreplacement.Iftheringsshownosignsofdamageorabnormalwear,theymaybereused.Toinstallpistonrings,collapsetheringsoneatatimewhileinsertingthepistonintothecylinderbody,usingalightoiltoaidthisprocess.
Cylinder AssemblyThecylindershouldbere-assembledasfollows:
1) The back-up washers, where tted, and then the body
O-ringsshouldbelightlylubricatedandpressedintothegroovesintheheadandcap,withouttwisting.Thecylinderbody, with the piston and rod already tted, can then beassembledtothecapby‘rocking’itdownovertheO-ringuntilthecylinderbodyisincontactwiththecap.Theheadis then tted over the piston rod and assembled to thecylinderbody.Rockgentlyuntilthebodyandheadareinmetal-to-metalcontact.
2) Lightlylubricatetheglandseals.
3a) Cylindershavingathreadedgland(AllcylindersexceptHDSeries)
Screwtheglandintotheretaineraboutonethreadshortoftheretainerfacethatcontactsthecylinderhead.Slidethegland/retainerassemblyoverthepistonrodend,takingcarenottodamagetheseallips.Orientholesinfullsquareretainersoverthetierodholesintheheadorlineupholesinsmallerretainerswiththreadedmountingholes.Assembleboltsthat secure bolt-on retainers nger tight.
3b) HDSeriesCylinders
Slidethegland/retainer/headassemblyoverthepistonrodend,
takingcarenottodamagetheseallips.4) Ensuringthattheheadandcaparekeptinalignment,
ret the cylinder tie rods.
Note: Some cylinder congurations have tie rods threadedinto a component other than tie rod nuts (e.g. head, cap,ange plate, etc). Before torquing the tie rods, use paint onthe tie rods as an indicator that adequate thread engage-ment is achieved. Ensure that no unpainted thread isexposed at the connection to the mating component.
Forbothstyleretainers,torquetierodnutstovalueslistedonpage6.Torque tie rods gradually starting at one cornerand work in a diagonal pattern to ensure evenness oftightening. DO NOT TORQUE ONE TIE ROD COMPLETELYAND THEN THE OTHERS. Then,oncylinderswithbolt-onretainers,torqueboltstothevalueslistedonpage6.
Trunnion MountsTrunnion mount with trunnion in groove on cylinder body–Torquecapendtierodstovaluelistedintable,thentorqueheadtierodstothesamevalue.
Trunnion mounts with trunnion located against a singleshoulder on the cylinder body–Torquetierodsonthelargerdiametersideoftheshouldertoapprox.10%oftorquetablevalue.Thentorquethetierodsontheoppositeendtothefulltablevalue.
Trunnion mounts located on a cylinder body without ashoulder – Assemble short set of tie rods rst, using paintmarksonthecylinderbodyasalocationguide.Ensurethetrunnionpinsaresquaretothebody.Installthelongertierodsandtorquetovaluesinthetable.
5) Tocompletetheassemblyofcylinderswithathreaded
gland, tighten the gland rmly against the cylinder head.Toaidthisprocess,aGlandWrenchSetshouldbeused.A specially designed face-type gland wrench with aredlugs slips into an exact, sure t on the gland, while a self-lockingspannerwrenchgripstheglandwrenchsecurely.YoucanordertheCartridgeWrenchorSpannerWrenchto t the piston rod size used in your Parker Hannin Cylin-der.Seetableonpage5.
Servicing Cushion Needle and Check ValvesLeakagefromcushionadjustersorcheckvalvescrewsindicatesthatthescreworcartridge-typeassemblymustbereplaced.ThereplacementassemblyincludesanewO-ring.
RemovalThescrew/cartridgeassemblyshouldbeunscrewedanditsmountingholecleaned,payingcloseattentiontothesurfaceonwhichtheO-ringsits.
Installation – Cushion Needle ValvesWhere a cartridge-type adjuster is tted, lightly lubricate thescrew threads and torque to the gures shown in the tableonpage6.Withbothtypes,thehex-headedscrewmaybeadjustedtoprovidetherequiredcushioningperformance.
Installation – Check ValveEnsurethattheballiscorrectlypositioned.Screw-typeadjust-ers should be screwed fully home, and then backed o by afullturn.

Servicing Cylinder Gland Seals Fluidleakagefromthepistonrodattheglandnormallyindicateswornglandseals.Thecylindershould,ifpossible,beremovedforoverhaul,orthepistonroddisconnected.
Removal1) Inspectthepistonrodtomakesureitisfreefromburrsor
damage which would prevent the gland sliding o the rod.
TheParkerglandisacartridgedesignconsistingofabronzegland(14),primaryrodseal(41),back-upwasher(43)forallhydrauliccylindersealclasses,andadoublelipwiperseal(40).ForHDSeriescylinderstheglandkitalsocontainsanO-ring(45)andback-upwasher(115)thatsealstheglandtothecylinderhead.TheHDglandisusuallyheldinplacewithabolt-onretainer.However,someHDSeriesmountingstylesinbores1½"-4"withcode2pistonroddiameterswillutilizearetainerplateheldinplacebytierods.Forallotherseriesofcylinders,theglandisthreadedintoaglandretainerplate.Theseglandsareusuallyremovablewithoutdisturbingthetierodtorque.Insomecases,wherealargediameterrodglandisthreadedintoalargesquareretainer,itmaybenecessarytoloosenthetierodstoremovethegland.
2) Wheretheglandisscrewedintoasquareretainer,unscrewtheglandusingaGlandWrenchandSpannerdescribedonthe previous page, and slide the gland o the piston rod.
Wheretheglandisscrewedintoacircularretainer,undothesocketheadcapscrewsandslidethegland/retainerassembly o the piston rod. Unscrew and withdraw the glandfromtheinnerfaceoftheretainer.
3)Removethesealsusingasharppointedinstrument,takingcarenottodamagethegland.Cleanandinspecttheglandboreandsealgrooves.IfanywearispresentreplacewithaGlandCartridgeKitcontainingsealsofthecorrecttypefortheconditions.
InstallationInspectthesurfaceofthepistonrodfordamagewhichcouldcause early seal failure. When tting the gland over the rodthread,aslightrotarymotionwillhelppreventdamagetotheseals.Inaddition,shimstockorotherthin,toughmaterialcanbewrappedaroundthethreadstoprotecttheseallips.
1)Ensurethatthekitcontainssealsofthecorrecttype.Lubricate the gland and seals, and t the wiper (40) into thegrooveclosesttotheoutsidefaceofthegland.
2) IfaClass1materialrodseal,forahydrauliccylinder,isbeing tted to a standard gland, no back-up washer isnecessary.Aback-upwasher(43)isincludedinsealkitsforallotherserviceclasses.Installthisintherodsealgroove,againstthewallclosesttothewiper.Installthelipseal(41)inthegroove,with the lips facing the pressure (cylinder)side of the gland.
3) BeforeinstallingHDSeriescylinderglands,replaceO-ring(45)andback-upwasher(115).LubricatethesecomponentsandinstallthemintothegrooveatthebaseoftheglandontheOD.OrienttheO-ringandback-upwasherasshowninthedrawingonpage1.
AllglandsealsforHDSeriescylinders,includingtheODO-ring,mustbelubricatedpriortoassembly.Slidetheglandcartridgeoverthepistonrodendthreadandintothecylinderhead.Placetheretainerplateoverthegland,installthemount-ingboltsandtorquetothevalueslistedonpage6.Notethatsomemountingstylesinbores1½"-4"withcode2pistonroddiameterswillutilizearetainerplateheldinplacebytierods.
4) EachkitwithathreadedtypeglandcontainsanO-ring(45)whichsealstheglandtothecylinderhead.ThisO-ringisastaticseal,andtheoriginalmustbeleftinplaceunlessitisfaulty.
Note: Some seal kits contain more than one O-ring.In this case, t the one which is identical in size and thickness to the existing O-ring. Any extra O-rings shouldbe discarded.
Slidetheglandcartridgeoverthepistonrodandthreaditinto
the retainer. Tighten the gland rmly against the cylinder headusingaGlandWrenchandSpanner.Insomecases(especiallylargepistonroddiameters)itmaybenecessarytoloosenthetierodnutsorretainerbolts,andremovetheretainer,inordertothreadtheglandbackintoplace.Inthosecases,threadtheglandintotheretaineraboutonethreadshortoftheretainerfacethatcontactsthecylinderhead.Slidetheglandassemblyoverthepistonrodandorientholesinlargeretainerswithtierodholesandholesinbolt-onretainerswiththreadedmountingholes.Seattheretaineragainstthecylinderhead.Assemblebolts that secure bolt-on retainers nger tight. For both styleretainers,torquetierodnutstovalueslistedonpage6. Torqueties rods gradually starting at one corner and work in adiagonal pattern to ensure evenness of tightening. DONOT TORQUE ONE TIE ROD COMPLETELY AND THEOTHERS.Then,oncylinderswithbolt-onretainers,torqueboltstothevalueslistedonpage6.Tocompletetheassem-
bly, in all cases, tighten the gland cartridge rmly against thecylinderheadusingaGlandWrenchandSpanner.
Gland seals are pressure activated and do not needadjustment.
