During the month of November, our high schoolwill be participating in theArizona College Application Campaign (AzCAC). OnNovember 17th,all seniors will be encouraged to apply for admission to at least one college, university, trade or vocational school. This event is possible due to the collaborative efforts of the administration, faculty, and staff at Winslow High School, and its success relies on students, their families, and volunteers from our community and from Arizona universities, community colleges, and private colleges. The purpose of this campaign is to help senior students complete the college application process and to communicate the importance of applying to college. In the upcomingweeks, seniors will be asked to fill out aCollege Application Data Collection Form as part of their AmericanGovernment or Economics classes. Please keep an eye out for this form, as information on this form will help yourchild complete his/her college application. As a parent and family, you are a critical part of this program. You can help your senior in two ways.

1. Encourage and help them complete theCollege Application Data Collection Form and ensure they return it to their American Government or Economics teacher. 2. Talk to your child about their future education plans. Ask them what they want to do after high school graduation. Talk about your desires, interests, and concerns. Keep talking with them over the next months about graduation and their next steps. If you have questions, or if you would like to serve as a volunteer for the College Application Campaign, please callthe Winslow High School Counseling Office at 928-288-8282. Thank you for your support of your child and yourinterest their future.

On Saturday,September 6th,the Winslow HighSchool's FIRSTTech Challenge(FTC) Competitionteam, the Cyber Hounds, came out of their dog house or more likeCyber Hound lab. At 5:00am the team gathered on the edge of theWinslow High School campus eager to get to ASU Tempe, whereteams across the state were gathering for the FIRST RoboticsSeason kick off. WHS freshman, Benjamin Lee was sitting in thevan eyes wide open, "Good Morning" as he greeted his teamcoach during roll call. The WHS Cyber Hounds are one of thenewest competition organizations to begin their debut in the stateof Arizona this Fall. The six students representing the team of tenwere divided into pairs as they went to multiple training prior to therevealing of this year's FTC game that has been a mystery allsummer. WHS Teachers Michael Harpst, Zach French andNorman Arnold had already referred to online blog sites asstudents all over the world speculated exactly what this year'schallenge would entail. The students from the state of Arizonacrowded around a tarp covered, approximately 3 meter by 3 meter, arena. Christine Sapio, Coconino High School, led the unveilingof the arena and presenting a video introducing all the rules andhow the game is to be played. The FIRST robotics competition is an event that is multifaceted. It entails students competing in not just an arena but in theircommunities as they work to practice and spread graciousprofessionalism. Each team keeps an engineering notebookthat documents their daily growth as a team, their engineeringideas, failures, and successes. WHS sophomore, Emma Kloor, returned from a training shared excitingly, "It is so much morethan I thought it was." Emma reviewed the pages of notes shemade with her coach and other team members. At a Q & Asession, WHS freshman, Gabriel Garcia, took up the micinquiring about how he could impact his local community.Seniors Isaac Quinonez and Rudi Ward lead their team in apresentation dedicated to introducing younger competitorsparticipating in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) to FTC.Judacael Tombo, WHS junior, assisted in the preparing andplacing of the Cyber Hounds' robot on the playing field. Indoing so, the WHS Cyber Hounds were most likely the veryfirst Arizona team to place their robot on this year's competitionfield. Coach Michael Harpst shared at the end of the trip, withZach French agreeing, "This team is full of intrinsically motivatedand hardworking students." WHS is very happy to have thisgreat program for students and with support from the GEARUP grant the team is able to purchase much needed materialsand attend these wonderful events.
