Cities and

Built Environment

December 2011 Activities

Across the ’Cities and Built Environment’ this December we’ll be focusing on existing buildings with a look

at the winner of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s 2011 Energy Star National Building

Competition winner, retrofitting automated metering and low energy refits in multi-tenant spaces. We’ll

also be exploring smart grids and how they can help improve the sustainability of large-scale

temperature-controlled logistics facilities.

Thought Leadership

FROM DECEMBER 1ST

Throughout November, we’ll have blog posts f rom our regular line

up of contributors including Robert de Jong from the Urban Land

Institute, as well as posts from Tim Dixon of the Oxford Institute

for Sustainable Development on low carbon plans and strategies

of UK cities and Joe Peach who will be looking at urban design

and planning.

The Value of Green Workplaces

for Occupiers

FROM DECEMBER 1ST

The Urban Land Institute is championing building energy

efficiency through the LessEn initiative. In the coming months it’s

undertaking a collaborative research project to define a number

of things such as: do energy efficient workplaces have ademonstrable impact on commercial property values; and what

are the future trends in energy efficient workplace values? In

December we’ll bring you more on the project together with the

opportunity to take part in the research via an online survey.

The Battle of the Buildings:

learn how to cut your building’s

energy use by 63%

THURSDAY DECEMBER 6TH

3:00 P.M. (GMT)  /  10:00 A.M. (EST)

In November the University of Central Florida (UCF) was

announced the winner of the US Environmental Protection

Agency’s 2011 Energy Star National Building Competition. In this

webinar, UCF will explain how they managed to cut the energy

consumption of the parking garage on the university’s main

campus by 63.2% and how they decided on the technologies and

approach they took. We’ll also hear about some of the headline

trends among the other top competitors.

2degrees Essentials: Behavior

change in the workplace

FROM DECEMBER 9TH

A significant portion of a building’s energy use is related to how

the occupants use it - more than half in some cases. This month

we’ll be publishing the latest installment in the 2degrees

‘Essentials’ series with a guide on behavior change and how it

impacts on building energy efficiency. This is an exciting field and

although significant gains have been made in the last three

decades, it’s still very much evolving. The aim of this guide is to

provide an introduction to the topic for property managers,

design teams, landlords, tenants and developers. It will be

followed up in January with a webinar.

Automated Metering: How, why

where and when?

TUESDAY DECEMBER 14TH

3:00 P.M. (GMT)  /  10:00 A.M. (EST)

Automated metering is claimed to offer guaranteed reductions in

base-building energy use of at least 10% by offering, amongst

other things, comprehensive data reporting and identifying

energy saving opportunities quickly. This webinar will explore the

drivers and business case for implementing automated metering,

how they are bringing together the various parties in the building

to make it work and some of the technical challenges faced by

landlords.

Food, Drink and the Smart Grid

TUESDAYD

ECEMBER13

TH

3:00 P.M. (GMT)  /  11:00 A.M. (EST)

What does the smart grid have to do with food and drink? Find

out in this webinar which focuses on the potential for reducing

the energy consumption of large scale temperature controlled

logistics facilities and smaller supermarket refrigeration. We’ll

explore why such facilities are a target for smart grid

technologies, take a look at load shifting and shedding strategies,

how to predict load characteristics, and the potential for

incorporating renewables into the energy supply.

Discussion: How can Local

Authorities Prepare for the

Green Deal?

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 20TH

The UK’s government’s Green Deal is the backbone of its plan to

retrofit 26 million homes with energy-saving measures by 2030.

How are local authorities preparing for its introduction?
