Suffixesprovidebasicstructureandmeaningtowords.Theyarecalledsuffixesbecauseoftheir
placementattheendofwords.Forexample,phobiaisthesuffixforxenophobia.
Theyare
commonly
derived
from
Greek
and
Latin
suffixes.
For
example,
the
suffix
phobia
is
derived
fromtheGreeksuffixphobosmeaningfearing.Learningandrecognizingthesecommonsuffixescan
helpyoudeciphermeaning.Ifyouwereunfamiliarwiththewordxenophobiabutknewthesuffix
phobia,youcouldthengathersomesortofmeaningfromthesuffixmeaning,fear.
Inmanycases,knowingthesuffixwillbeenoughtohelpyoudecipherthemeaningofawordina
sentence;inothercases,youllwanttousethedictionarytounderstandthewordfully.Ineither
