BUILDINGS CREATE THE LANDSCAPE

Similarly the landscape for the project builds on Pearl and Shell conceptual tenants. The landscape of the project consists of two basic areas: the area outside of and surrounding the two buildings and the interior area that lies centrally, between the two buildings. The outer area is open and grand and the landscape elements emulate the long curving strokes found in the architecture. The inner garden consists of a series of earth forms that conceptually suggest both rolling hills found at the juncture of the mountain and the valley floor. These bamboo covered hills are landscape complements to the sculptural abstrac-tion of the buildings and create as green interface between the hard walls of the buildings exterior skin.

Main Plaza

Pier & Glass Art

EXTERIOR LANDSCAPE

The exterior condition of the site occurs on the outer curve of the main building. This area of the site is comparable to the plains at the base of a plateau, or large landform.

WALLS

Two large sculptural walls respond to the scale of the building and help organize these circulatory challenges by defining the two main axes on the site.

CALLIGRAPHER’S BRUSH

LIGHT FEATURE

The calligrapher’s brush is the instrument of both literature and painting. It is used as a beacon at the entry plaza to the cultural center to symbolize the con-nection between art, literature, music, and knowledge.

Pearal - Roof Garden

The concept for the roof garden describes the journey of water that collects high in the mountain top and flows through a series of cascades down to the valley floor. The landscape through which the water travels is a field of flowers which symbolizes both mountain wild flowers and forests. This source of water symbolizes the source of water that feeds the various water displays throughout the garden.Imagine the visitor arriving at the great plaza , entering the halls of the main building, and finally approaching the window that looks out into the pearl garden. On either side of the Pearl Building softly undulating hills of bamboo frame a view of the central building. The visitor gazes upon three canals of water that cascade down the sloped roof of the building toward them. Bordering the water canals are brightly colored fields of flowers swaying in the wind.

EARTHFORMS:

This space has a greater opportunity than being just a view corridor to the lake. The placement of these objects in the site follows the Suzhou Garden tradition of allowing spaces to unfold, ending at the most supreme space, They area progression of hills that obscure the immediate view of the lake beyond. These objects are separate, but not disconnected.
