    Minimum width the minimum width of staircase shall be as follows:

    a) Residential buildings (dwellings) 1.0 m

    NOTE for row housing with 2 storeys, the minimum width shall be 0.75 m

    b) Residential hotel buildings 1.5 m

    Requirements

    The minimum width of tread without nosing shall

    be 250 mm for residential

    buildings

    The minimum width of tread for other buildings shall be 300 mm

    be as per NBC 2005, Part 4 Fire and Life Safety Lobbies should not carry more than 30 people per 100m2

    The minimum width of corridors in buildings serving patients bedrooms and from the point of

    view of physically handicapped people, shall be

    The factors used in the calculation

    for width of internal staircases are:

    (a) Unit Width: Fifty centimetres

    shall be considered the unit

    width required by people moving

    in single line

    (b) Experiments have shown that 40

    people can easily be evacuated

    per minute through a one- unit,

    width. The rate of evacuation is

    also known as 'discharge rate

    The factors used in the

    internal staircases are:

    c) Each storey of a building

    shall be evacuated on to

    the stairs in a maximum

    time of 2-1/2 minutes and
