1. Open the stereo sound files that you wish to use as the Left/Right “Front”and Left/Right “Rear Surround” pairs in QuickTime Pro. The files must bethe exact same length, same sample rate, bit depth and format.

2. Click on the player containing the Rear pair to select it. Select All of its

content with Apple Key + “A.” Copy all of it contents with Apple Key +“C.”

3. Click on the player containing the Front pair to select it. Select All of its

content with Apple Key + “A.” Note that the two, small position markersin are now at the start and finish of the QT player timeline.

4. Add the Rear sound file that you copied to the Front sound file by

selecting, Edit -> “Add Selection & Scale.” There is no visual indicationthat the task has been performed.

5. With the Front Player now holding both Front and Rear sound files still

selected, under Window, select, “Show Movie Properties.” In the window

that opens, click on “SoundTrack 1” and the tab,” Audio Settings.”

6. In the Channel / Assignment window, click-hold on the pull-down menu tothe at the end of the 1 / Left row and assign this channel to “Left.” (Frontis assumed). Assign 2 / Right to “Right.”

7. Select Sound Track 2. In the Channel / Assignment window, for 1 / Left,

and assign this channel to “Rear Surround Left.” Assign 2 / Right to “RearSurround Right.”

8. Close the “Properties Window” and play the Front Player to determine

that the channels are correctly assigned. You'll need a 4 or more channelaudio card that has been configured for Multi-Channel Playback.

9. If the channel assignments are correct, to save the file in the same

resolution as the original sound files, select File -> Save. This will createa QuickTime file with a .mov extension that will play quadraphonic soundwith QuickTime Player or with other QuickTime compatible playerapplications like RealPlayer, iTunes and MPEG Streamclip. The .mov canbe uploaded and will play on-line with a browser that has QuickTimeinstalled on a configured computer platform.

10. You can also create the quadraphonic file in compressed, ACC format.

1. Make sure their channel assignments are clearly indicated in their filenames and open the six, monoaural sound files that you wish to use in

2. Click on the player containing the Right Front channel to select it. Selectall of its content with Apple Key + “A.” Copy all of it contents in thecomputer buffer by pressing the Apple Key + “C” keys.

3. Click on the player containing the Left Front channel to select it. Select

all of its duration with Apple Key + “A.” Add the Right Front sound file (that is in thebuffer) by choosing Edit -> “Add Selection & Scale” from the menu. Thereis no visual indication that the task has been performed. The Left Frontplayer window now contains the Right channel material as well.

4. Click on the the Rear Surround Left sound file and select all of it with

Apple Key + “A.” Copy all of it to the buffer by pressing the Apple + “C”keys. Add it to the Left Front sound file by first selecting the player andthen Edit -> “Add Selection & Scale” under the menu.

5. Click on the the Rear Surround Right sound file and select all of it with

Apple Key + “A.” Copy all of it to the buffer by pressing the Apple + “C”keys. Add it to the Left Front sound file by first selecting the player andthen Edit -> “Add Selection & Scale” under the menu.

6. Click on the the Center sound file and select all of it with Apple Key +

8. With the Front Player now holding all of the monoaural sound files stillselected, under Window, select, “Show Movie Properties.” In the windowthat opens, click on “SoundTrack 1” and the tab,” Audio Settings.”

9. In the Channel Assignment window, use the pull-down menu to assign

the mono channel from Sound Track 1 to, “Left.”

10. Click on Sound Track 2. In the Channel Assignment window, use thepull-down menu to assign the mono channel from Sound Track 2 to,“Right.”

11. Click on Sound Track 3. In the Channel Assignment window, use the pull-

down menu to assign the mono channel from Sound Track 3 to, “RearSurround Left.”

12. Click on Sound Track 4. In the Channel Assignment window, use the pull-

down menu to assign the mono channel from Sound Track 4 to, “RearSurround Right.”

13. Click on Sound Track 5. In the Channel Assignment window, use the pull-

down menu to assign the mono channel from Sound Track 5 to, “Center.”

Goal 3 Use QuickTime Pro to export six, full-resolution stereo audio filescombined into 5.1 surround sound in the compressed, AAC format. (Also applies toQuadraphonic files).

1. Follow steps 1-15 above. Select the player with all of the files. Under theFile menu, Select, “Export.” In the window that opens, use the “Export”pull-down menu to select, “Movie to QuickTime Movie.”

2. Click on the “Options” button. In the window that opens, click on the

“Settings” button under “Sound.” Under “Format,” select AAC. Under“Channels,” select , “5.1” or other appropriate format. Under “Rate,”make sure the rate is the same sample rate as the original sound filesunless you want it resampled. Under, “Render Settings: Quality,” select“Best.” For “MPEG4 Encoder settings: Target Bit Rate, “ select 320 kbps.

3. Close the Sound Settings Window. Click OK in the Movie Settings Window,

Name the file as desired and click, “Save.”

4. Its not a bad idea to also save a full resolution version of the combinedfiles in case you want to export versions at lower bit rates in the future oradd images, etc. For this, see step 16, Goal 2 above.
