Useful Tips: Preschoolers
Start with Level 1 books that have a simple sentence on each page
If they are stuck on a word encourage them to figure it out by:
Using the picture on the page
Trying to guess what the word could be
If they seem reluctant to sound out and read each page alternate with them
Pause and ask questions to see if they are understanding what they have read
At the end of 2 pages ask them to recall the new words that they have learnt

Useful Tips: Kindergarten & Above
Help them identify the key character(s) in the book
Encourage them to break up the story into a beginning, middle and end
Ask leading questions what someone is feeling, what might happen next
Kids love to feel in control - switch roles and let your child ask you questionsabout the story
Draw connections or differences between whats happening in the book withreal life situations
At the end ask them to recall their most or least favorite parts of the book
