BUILDING LIVES

at WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE

Page 2: Building Lives Brochure

The renewal of our historic Sanctuary was just the beginning. For what is a beautiful sanctuary without a beautiful community and powerful mission? Who are we as Jews if we do not inspire and educate the next generation of our children and reach out to our neighbors, whom the Torah commands us to love as we love ourselves?

The Building Lives Capital Campaign to develop and complete the Erika J. Glazer Family Campus moves forward now with the exciting new construction of the Karsh Family Social Service Center along

Sixth Street. Groundbreaking takes place in the summer of 2014; the Center will open in winter 2016.

Through the Karsh Center we will reach out to our low-income neighbors, providing a food pantry, dental and eye care, legal aid, and mental health services in Spanish, Korean, and English. Hundreds of Temple members will volunteer, and the heart of Los Angeles will know us to be a kind and caring people. This new building will also include parking for 450 cars and a rooftop sports complex for our students, congregants, and neighbors.

At the same time, we begin the renovation and restoration of the newly named de Toledo Family Historic School Building and the renovation of our 1962 school building. When both are completed in the fall of 2015, our growing Erika J. Glazer Early Childhood Center and Brawerman Elementary School East will have permanent homes with state-of-the-art classrooms, science labs, libraries, and music and art studios.

We have a long-term higher purpose to motivate and inspire us. Together, we are building lives.

Our Story Continues

We are honored to serve as campaign co-chairs for this dramatic phase of our Building Lives Campaign.

Take a close look at the vivid architectural renderings in this booklet and imagine yourself, your family, and friends in what will be among the most beautiful and meaningful places in Los Angeles.

Our Erika J. Glazer Family Campus is poised to become not only a vibrant hub for Jewish life, serving the spiritual needs of a resurgent Jewish community on the Eastside, but also an oasis of care and comfort to our underserved neighbors. It’s going to be amazing!

We are proud to support our Temple and to help accomplish its mission. By making a philanthropic investment, each one of us becomes a catalyst for transformation–for ourselves, for our city, and for future generations. We invite you to join us. Thank you!

Dear Congregants,

Along with our farsighted board of trustees, I took a hard look at our fading but still beautiful Temple on a worn-down block in Wilshire Center/Koreatown and wagered that you could imagine what I could imagine: that Wilshire Boulevard Temple and the core of our great city had not only a proud past but a bright future. I could imagine the eternal light of our Sanctuary shining on an unparalleled place of beauty for worship, celebration, culture, and public discourse. I could imagine the sounds of children in study and at play. I could imagine a thriving Jewish community in service to reinvigorated neighborhoods in the heart of Los Angeles.

We have already seen the magnificent result of our completed Sanctuary. Together we now take the next leap. Make a gift today and make our people, our mission, and our future stronger. Make a real difference.

With deepest gratitude,

Rabbi Steven Z. Leder Pritzker Chair of Senior Rabbinics

“I’m very proud of my family’s past and present commitment to the Temple. We have had b’nei mitzvah, confirmations, and weddings and have attended Religious School, Brawerman, and Camp Hess Kramer. We have sat in Row T in the Sanctuary for five generations.”

“As a parent, it’s thrilling to see our small school grow and become even more vibrant. I am also so happy that my children will gain an understanding of how a community can provide not only for its own but for those in need all over the city.”

“At our son Adam’s brit milah I said to everyone assembled that the same words written on the walls of Factor Chapel (‘Know before Whom you stand’) would have been inscribed on the walls of my family’s now-empty village synagogue in Bohemia. We carry on their heritage at Wilshire Boulevard Temple.”

This is our place

Rabbi Harvey Fields, z”l, foresaw that building schools at our Audrey and Sydney Irmas Campus would create the anchor for Jewish life on the Westside. Our remarkable Mann Family Early Childhood Center, opened in 1998, focuses on recognizing the competence and creativity of young children. Brawerman Elementary School West, now known as one of the most outstanding K-6 schools in Los Angeles, celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Our future scientists and artists, computer experts and writers become true mensches at our schools and go on to succeed at the finest middle schools, high schools, and universities.

At our Erika J. Glazer Family Campus we’re now building equally inspiring schools to meet the needs of our growing young families. The Erika J. Glazer Early Childhood Center and Brawerman East are currently in temporary facilities while awaiting the completion of this next phase of the Building Lives Campaign. Both schools remain modest in size, but once their new facilities are open, they are sure to become a powerful force for excellence in education throughout the city.

Beyond its great schools, the Glazer Campus will soon be a thriving hub for Jewish life from morning till night. You will be able to volunteer at the Karsh Family Social Service Center with your family, go for a run, play basketball or take a yoga class in our rooftop athletic facilities, check your messages or chat with friends in a contemplative garden, attend a dance performance, concert, or class, and join us for services that open your heart and soothe your soul.

Karsh Family

Jeffrey, Michael, Bruce, Martha, and Katie

A key mission of our Temple, and of Judaism itself, is to help repair our world (tikkun olam). We will measure our future success not only by the number of neighbors our congregants serve but by the number of congregants who serve our neighbors.

For Martha and Bruce Karsh, this dual mission is central to their philanthropy. Their gift to the Building Lives Campaign to name the Karsh Family Social Service Center

will ensure the engagement of our congregation and the betterment of our neighbors.

“The Temple sits in a unique multicultural community,

made up largely of immigrants,” Martha observes, “and we felt that reaching out to our neighbors was a really important responsibility of our Temple. Our families were all immigrants just two generations back. It just felt like the right thing to do.”

Including “Family” in the center’s name is essential to Martha and Bruce, who met as students at University of Virginia Law School and have been married for 34 years. It not only reflects the name of their foundation and the values they want to pass on to their children but also, Martha says, “communicates that we’re all part of this Wilshire Boulevard Temple family and the larger Los Angeles family, and families help one another.”

Community ConnectionsA beautiful communal space truly fulfills its purpose when it is continually filled by its community. We will continue to open our magnificent Sanctuary not only for services but to the entire city for literary and musical luminaries like recent guests Malcolm Gladwell and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as emerging talent, seasoned thinkers, and soaring celebrations. We look forward to hosting all of Los Angeles with offerings that enlighten the mind and uplift the spirit. This is our community.
