2017 OWL AwardsDuring 2017, nominations were received from Kokosing, Inc. team members to identify those individuals who they felt best represented the leadership disciplines identifi ed in the OWL Program. The nominated individuals are mindful that their desire to achieve results is only obtained by owning their own 20 square feet every single day. It is through this establishment of trust that the appropriate culture is created, driving the appropriate behavior of those around them. Their leadership infl uences others to achieve, it is what others want to be a part of. Their leadership gets the desired results. Congratulations to all of the recipients of the OWL awards.

Thank you to Dan Schweiger for creating all of these beautiful chainsaw carved wooden owl awards. Dan is a Senior Area Manager with Kokosing Construction.

The 2017 OWL Award winners are:

Leadership - OWLBrian Burgett

To date, the company has invested $1,000,000 for over 800 supervisory team members to spend two days in an introduction to leadership that we call OWL (Operate With Leadership). We have pulled some of our top leaders off their regular jobs to lead these classes and have spent thousands of hours following up with the team members that have been through the class. These are huge commitments of

resources and they were not made lightly. They were made because of the value that can come in your individual lives and to the company when our team members put into practice what is taught in the OWL program.

The OWL program is about continuing to develop the leadership qualities in each of us. We need all of our team members to be leaders, to take responsibilities for their actions, and to understand that they are in control of how they respond to an event. Great companies become great because they have great leaders throughout all levels of the organization. A great leader makes things happen that wouldn’t have happened without the infl uence and impact of the leader. Leaders engage, inspire, and energize team members to do things they wouldn’t have done on their own.

There are some great concepts that we have covered in the OWL program such as, “No BCD”, no Blaming, Complaining, or Defending. Closely tied to that is “Owning Your 20 Square Feet”, which is a short way of saying “be accountable for your action or inaction”. Another favorite is “E+R=O”, which stands for Event + Response = Outcome. Events occur every day, as will an outcome. You control your response which will work to infl uence the outcome you desire.

Kokosing has always been about people. Leadership is about people! It is about building Trust through being a person of Character, having technical Competence, and building a Connection with your team. It is also about performance. It is about achieving results through Clarity of message. It is about holding ourselves and others Accountable and it is about providing the Support that leads to success. We want all of our team members to continually strive to improve their leadership skills, for each of us to become better people and for Kokosing to become a better place to work.

On the adjacent page are the recipients of the 2017 OWL Awards. Congratulations to each of the individuals for being the best examples of great leaders within Kokosing.

Thank you for being a part of the Kokosing Family and enjoy the rest of the “Hoot Owl”.

Building It Together: Lick Run Valley Conveyance and OSU Cannon DriveArticle Opening by Brian BurgettWhen you combine the capabilities of Kokosing Construction and Kokosing Industrial you have a vast amount of experience in the heavy construction arena.

In early 2017, the OSU Cannon Drive Relocation Project in Columbus and the Lick Run Valley Conveyance Project in Cincinnati came out for bid. These projects had work that matched the expertise of both Kokosing Construction and Kokosing Industrial. It was exciting to see the companies join together and bid both projects and even more exciting when

they were low bidder on them. With Kokosing Construction moving in August into the new offi ce building at Westerville, we hope to have many more opportunities to draw on the talents of both companies working together.

This article features these two projects focusing on the excellent teamwork and the benefi ts of working together.

LICK RUN VALLEY CONVEYANCE

On June 5, 2017, Kokosing Industrial was low bidder on the Lick Run Valley Conveyance project. This is the fi rst project that Kokosing Industrial and Kokosing Construction were successful on together. The project has a 1.5 mile long cast in place box conduit, sanitary sewer, precast arch segments, and major shoring installation that fi t Kokosing Industrial’s scope of work. It also has fi ve bridges, mass excavation, road work, and traffi c control that Kokosing Construction does day in and day out. Building this together was a perfect fi t.

The project is located three miles outside of downtown Cincinnati. It is important to the area because it is replacing an old combined sewer system built in the 1930’s which currently allows 500 million gallons of raw sewage per year to discharge into Mill Creek during heavy rains, which ultimately feeds the Ohio River. The new storm water conveyance system and ancillary storm lines will reduce 400 million gallons of discharge per year.

A major added benefi t to the community is the revitalization of a mile and half of this urban area adding a meandering creek, park, walking paths, playground, and basketball courts. When complete, the newly created park will cover 67 acres of what used to be commercial and residential properties that were inactive or mostly abandoned.

Kokosing Construction has had many major projects in the area over the past and has brought a strong workforce to the project. Kokosing Construction’s Senior Area Manager Dan Schweiger said, “We have been able to maximize the talents from both companies and put our team members in areas where they are excelling. When you walk onto the project you would only know the project is being built by Kokosing; no single company over shadows the other. It is a true defi nition of a team.”

This project has had many challenges, but the two main ones are the location of the work and the schedule. The project is located between two heavily traveled roads that provide access to the large west side community of Cincinnati and the downtown business and retail area. Crews work daily to minimize the disruption to the traveling public, as much as possible, while still completing the work.

The second major challenge is the schedule. The Cincinnati Metropolitan District (MSD) is under a Consent Decree mandate from the Ohio EPA to reduce the discharge of water and sewage into Mill Creek during heavy rains by December 31, 2018. In order to achieve this milestone for the MSD, Kokosing must relocate all storm sewer systems to the new conveyance structure. This tall order requires the completion of 80% of the project or $70 million in construction during the allotted 18 month time frame.

Kokosing mobilized on site on June 9, 2017 and is currently running at peak manpower of 130 team members expending over 4,000 man hours per week. That is a total of 170,000 man

hours worked to date with zero serious injuries. On June 14th, all project team members were able to sit down to a jobsite luncheon and celebrate the accomplishments by the entire team after being on the project for a year. Hats off to every co-worker involved in the project. Thank you for looking after yourself fi rst and foremost and looking after the team members working by your side day in and day out.

Kokosing Industrial’s Project Manager Jeff Albers summarized the relationship and benefi ts of Kokosing Construction and Kokosing Industrial building this project together, “I am most proud of the team mentality we have established on the project. Joining forces has aff orded us the opportunity to combine our knowledge of the diff erent aspects of work and in the process allow our team members to learn from each other. In the long run, each member of the Lick Run Team will leave with a stronger set of skills than they started with. Incorporating new team members with diff erent processes was a worry upfront, but the transition into one unit has been accomplished with ease. It has proven to be a great opportunity to utilize all our talented fi eld team members, especially during the winter months. I’m proud of how we are working together.”

A BETTER WAY TO DO THE WORKThe Lick Run project needed to form and pour a box culvert that was only fi ve feet tall and was just over a mile long. There was extensive labor inside the box to set and wreck shoring for the concrete lid. For our team members to work in this environment every day was a major concern. Being hunched over all day could pose some aches and pains to the body.

The project team worked together with the Form Shop in Fredericktown and created custom shoring tables, set on large coasters that could be raised or lowered in minutes. It then can be easily slid to the next location with very little labor and strain to our team members.

We are now able to wreck, move the tables, set them back up, and have a 40’ by 40’ pour ready in three days. To aid in accessing the work, we purchased rolling mechanic stools so all of our team members can stay seated while setting, wrecking, and moving the shoring. Electric winches are used to reduce the stress on team members while trying to slide these tables to the next set-up.

Thank you to everyone who helped come up with this great idea and to the From Shop for building the shoring.

None of us are as smart as ALL of us!

OSU CANNON DRIVE

At fi rst glance you would say the OSU Cannon Drive project is a road job and fi ts the expertise of Kokosing Construction. In reality, it has a substantial amount of work that Kokosing Industrial performs. The two companies teamed up and are using their combined talents to build this project together.

Kokosing Construction’s Area Manager Kerry Hart said, “I don’t know if we would have been successful going into this project with another company to build the pump station, but I do know that having Kokosing Industrial as our partner has been very benefi cial. We have worked very well together from the beginning to make this project run successfully.”

The OSU Cannon Drive project starts just south of the OSU Stadium at John Herrick Drive and ends at King Avenue. The main reason for the relocation of Cannon Drive is to prepare for the future expansion of the ever growing OSU James Cancer Hospital. Before the new half mile road could be relocated, a new storm water pump station needed to be built to handle the excessive storm water. The storm water is pumped into the Olentangy River which runs to the west side of the project. The pump station has from 36” to 54” large diameter internal mechanical piping and has three of the largest pumps made by KSB. This new pump station building will be very visible from SR 315 when passing the OSU campus. The project also includes the relocation of the current bike path and the addition of landscaping.

The new road includes the building of fi ve new intersections located at Medical Center Drive, 10th Avenue, 12th Avenue, John Herrick Drive, and King Avenue. Cannon Drive is completely shut down so we are not dealing with public traffi c. The crews working on the south end of the project and the pump station have had to work very closely so we can meet the reopening of Medical Center Drive this summer.

We are constructing a levee that runs the entire length of the project to prevent fl ooding of the Cannon Drive area. The

levee had to be built of a clay material specifi ed in the contract that is not common in the Columbus area. The project did a lot of searching and testing for this material and was able to fi nally locate it at the Olen Hartman Farm Plant. The project team was relieved that Olen could meet this need.

The construction team has been challenged by the number of changes that have been made in the design of the project. At bid time, the plans were 717 pages. To date, we have worked through changes on over 450 of those pages. We have a good working relationship with the engineering company EHM&T and the owner OSU which has helped us to work through the hundreds of changes. The use of IPads have helped tremendously in distributing the updated plans to the superintendents and foreman on the project.

Some of the major quantities on this project include the installation of 3,400 feet of sanitary sewer, 6,900 feet of storm sewer, and 4,500 feet of waterline. There is a total of 184,000 cubic yards of roadway embankment, 920 cubic yards of cast-in-place retaining walls, and 30,000 square yards roller compacted concrete.

Project Superintendent Brad Mast sums up what the benefi ts to Kokosing Construction and Kokosing Industrial are in building this project together, “On this project the coordination is easier, people and equipment can be shared, and changes to the project are easier to work through. It’s good for both companies.”

The Hamilton I-71-3.81 Martin Luther King (MLK) Interchange was selected in the over $5 million category for the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Donald C. Schramm Award for 2017. The MLK project consists of construction of a new interchange at I-71 and Martin Luther King Drive, reconstruction of ramps at McMillan Street and William Howard Taft Road, pavement restoration of I-71 and local streets, new bridge over I-71 for Stanton Avenue, and widening and deck replacement of the MLK bridge over I-71. The MLK bridge over I-71 was reconstructed with decorative pylons, cables, and aesthetic lighting to highlight the new features of the bridge. Due to the tight right-of-way limits, many walls were built in order to support the new ramps at the interchange. An unique feature of the walls was the basket weave design that was added to all of the new walls constructed. Thank you to everyone involved in building this project.

William B. Burgett Innovation of the Year AwardPrecast Lifting Jig

Kokosing team members have a longstanding history of fi nding innovative solutions to construction’s hardest challenges. This year, Kokosing Industrial introduced a new way to recognize team members who display that ingenuity in their work environment, the William B. Burgett Innovation of the Year Award.

The top teams presented their ideas at this year’s annual meeting for the rest of the company to vote on. Topics ranged from communication methods such as, utilizing videos to reach team members in the fi eld, to coming up with a new pre-fabrication technique to improve safety and quality on the job.

We are extremely proud to announce this year’s winner as the Precast Lifting Jig. This solution was implemented on two AEP substation projects in Indiana. Kokosing Industrial team members assembled a jig that would help lift and place wall panels in a safer and more eff ective way. This innovative solution signifi cantly reduced the team’s potential for hazardous exposure, cut the cost of the project by 30%, and increased productivity. Their solution truly represents what it means to be a part of the Kokosing Team and to exceed the expectations of our customers. Team members include: Jeff Blakeley, Charlie Judy, Ned Lust, Todd Sites, and Marcus Miller. Kokosing team members utilizing the precast lifting jig

to more eff ectively and safely complete their project.

Jeff began his Kokosing career on November 2, 1989 working on the I-70/I-71 project. Over the years, he worked on many diff erent projects including Southerly, Route 50 Athens, Madison County, Route

35 Dayton, Stanley Avenue in Dayton, I-670, and quite a few other projects along the way.

Jeff said his favorite project would be the Parsons Avenue WTP Upgrades project because that is where he was working when he made the decision to retire. Another favorite project is the Route 50 job in Athens because of all the great people he got to work with.

Using the term “retire” may not be appropriate since he is already back in his old line of work as a machinist and spending hours at his sawmill creating little projects for his family and friends.

A Kokosing Family. Jeff ’s son, Michael Lewis, is a Trade Superintendent with Kokosing Construction and his son, Mark Adams, is a Laborer with Kokosing Industrial. Jeff ’s brothers, John and Phil Adams also worked at Kokosing. John was a Laborer from 1989 until he retired in 2014. Phil was a Foremen from 1989 until his retirement in 2016.

Jeff lives in Nelsonville, OH with Vicki, his wife of 36 years. They have three adult children and the light of their lives, six grandchildren, Mariah (20), Lyndsay (17), Trey (16), Sydney (14), Kylee (11), and Blake (4). Jeff enjoys watching them play softball, baseball, cheerleading, and basketball. He is also a 4-H advisor. “I have enjoyed all of the good times and working with great people, especially Dave Rinehart and Greg Hirt.” ~ Jeff

From all of us, we thank Jeff for his dedicated work and service to the Kokosing family. Jeff will be missed and we wish him and his family nothing but the very best.

Pam McNeil retired on May 25, 2018 as the Contract Administrator with Kokosing Construction’s Asphalt Group at the Mansfi eld Offi ce.

Pam was hired in May 1988 by the late Wayne Rayburn as a fi eld secretary in the Mansfi eld Offi ce. At that time, it was

just an offi ce trailer. In 1989, Pam moved to the Fredericktown offi ce where she worked with the Highway Division under George Shaw’s direction.

When the Highway Division moved their offi ces to Columbus, Pam and George remained in the Fredericktown offi ce. Pam took over preparing bid documents and contracts for the whole Asphalt Group. Later when the Asphalt Group started expanding and acquiring more locations, some of those responsibilities were located to the new offi ces. Pam and George worked together for 18 years and made a great team. While at the Fredericktown offi ce, Pam also worked closely with Wayne Brassell and the Kokosing Materials Group.

In 2007, Pam moved back to the Mansfi eld offi ce and became the Contract Administrator. Besides doing the bid documents

and contracts for the Mansfi eld area, she took on a lot more responsibilities and worked directly with the crews.

“For 30 years Kokosing has been part of my family, which I will always treasure. I have worked for and worked with some of the most amazing people.” ~ Pam

Pam would always help with whatever needed to be done and put Kokosing’s best interest fi rst. Her work was always accurate and done on time. She was always the fi rst one to arrive at the offi ce in the morning. Pam was always a pleasure to work with and will be missed by the Mansfi eld team and all of her Kokosing friends.

Pam lives in Mt. Vernon, OH with her husband, Chuck McNeil. Chuck retired in 2010 from Kokosing Construction as an Operator. They have two grown children, Michael and Allison, and three grandchildren, Tucker (8), Taylor (4), and Tyler (2).

Pam is going to enjoy spending more time with family and friends and do some much needed traveling.

The Marine Division was able to overcome the forces of Mother Nature and complete the installation of a new three-phase 15kV power cable between Middle Bass Island and North Bass Island in Lake Erie. Work had to be scheduled around environmental restrictions forcing activities to be performed during the most challenging time of year, late fall and early spring.

The fi rst step was rock trenching off Middle Bass Island to protect the new power cable from extreme lake conditions caused by wind, waves, and ice. Team members were on site 18 days with 10 of those days standing by due to rough lake conditions. A 46-year storm event in April generated record lake levels causing extensive fl ooding and shoreline damage.

Improving weather conditions were a major factor allowing the new power cable installation to be completed in two days. A lake splice was required in the new power cable due to shipping methods selected by the cable manufacturer. New cable terminations, testing, and energization were performed in record time. The last step required removal of the sixty year old existing 9kV power cable. Mother Nature cooperated during this operation and the 6,500’ removal was completed in one day.

To date, the Marine Division has installed three power cables to South Bass Island (Put-In-Bay), one power cable between South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island, and one power cable between North Bass Island and Middle Bass Island.

1 - The daily MAP meeting. 2 - New power cable fi rst end fl oating to North Bass Island. 3 - Old power cable removal.

The 2016 upgrade to the Plymouth, Indiana wastewater treatment plant has reached substantial completion. This is cause for applause not just because of the good work we are leaving behind, but for the real diff erence we made to the way the utility will operate and contract in the future.

Kokosing Industrial was selected using Indiana’s Guaranteed Savings Contracting method. This part of the state code allows municipal owners to select contractors based on a qualifi cation process with a Guaranteed Maximum Price determined prior to entering the contract. This alternative delivery method allowed for open dialog between the contractor, the city, and the engineer, Midwestern Engineering.

As with any utility owner, this was not their fi rst capital project experience, but it was their best capital project experience. Kokosing Industrial’s Regional Manager Todd Lemen and Project Development Manager Tina Wolff sat down with the City of Plymouth’s Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson, to learn why this project was a success. First thing Donnie did was give credit to our people. He appreciated the way Superintendent Justin Rahall considered the diff erent aspects of a problem before voicing an opinion and how fair he was in his deliberations. Justin always stepped up to take responsibility when there was an issue caused by our work, winning Donnie’s confi dence and respect. Project Engineer Kyle Vanderford was credited with taking the time to work through details with the plant so they could plan for the long-term operation of the system. Donnie noted that all the Kokosing staff he encountered carried the same dedication to doing the job right- both from a craft perspective and safety – and that morale throughout the project was something he pointed his own staff toward. We all live with our safety standards day in and day out but the level of our dedication was new to the City. Donnie has taken several of our practices for their own, foremost being a heightened priority for safety and consequences for short cutting.

While we have delivered for Donnie and the City of Plymouth, they have returned the favor. We frequently list Plymouth as a reference in our other project proposals and know that other owners have spoken with him. We credit Donnie’s recommendations with cementing our selection in Anderson, IN and Evansville, IN.

The success of this project is a direct result of the leadership of the project foremen including Max Widmeyer, Ray Morris, Josh Zimmerman, Steve Garner, and Mike Humphreys, and their crew: Kevin Stone, Nate Queen, and the late Derek Morris.

1 - New centrifuge improves Plymouth’s ability to dewater their solids, lowering hauling and disposal costs. 2 - Existing aeration tanks remain in service while a new tank is constructed by supporting the 36” effl uent pipe. 3 - Form work and pouring of the concrete wall that becomes the base for a biosolids storage structure.

Women in Hard Hats

Kokosing Construction Website

On Monday March 26th, KCC Supply Manager Tami Cox and Form Shop Carpenter Maggie Logan represented Kokosing at the Women in Hardhats event sponsored by District 3 of ODOT. This event was put in place to expose sophomore, junior, and senior girls to non-traditional careers. Tami and Maggie were able to discuss the diff erent areas of the construction industry that each of them represent, along with what opportunities exist and the steps needed to begin working toward a career in construction.

Pictured are Tami (bottom row, 2nd from right) and Maggie (bottom row, far right) with the other speakers at the event.

1 - Morgan Rinehart and 2 - Tyler Reed replaced head gaskets on a Kokosing truck at the Fredericktown Truck Shop. 3 - They had to pull the cab off of the truck’s frame and set it aside to access everything on the engine. 4 - Once the cab was off the frame, all of the upper engine components were removed with only the engine block remaining in the chassis. This truck is now working great and back on the job!

Giving a Helping Hand Volunteer Program

Wildwood Playground

Meals-on-Wheels

The Wildwood Playground in Granville, OH is a favorite gathering place for families and school groups. It was built over 20 years ago and was in need of major improvements. The Granville Recreation District set up four days in April for volunteers to come help repair and rebuild this beloved park. Kokosing had over a dozen team members volunteer their time and spent a cold day helping make this park beautiful again. Thank you to Charles Smith, Michael Schmitt, Todd Blair, Dallas Kramer, George Minton, John Rigo, Rayna Strong, Brooke White, Troy Hargis, Bret Murray, Andy Fruehling, Andy Fox, and Trey Read.

The Meals-on-Wheels program is now in progress in the Westerville area. We have eight volunteers participating in this program. One day a week the volunteers go out in teams of two and deliver nutritious meals to those in need.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk

United Way’s - Day of ActionThe United Way Services of Geauga County’s “Day of Action” was held on June 22, 2018. Did you know that 25% of the households in this community are struggling to fulfi ll their basic needs? This means housing, childcare, transportation, and even food. On United Way’s Day of Action, they focus on these insecure households by creating food sources in the form of community gardens. Several team members and their friends volunteered their time to help with one of those food gardens. They worked at University Hospital and built a 4’ x 24’ raised bed garden and planted vegetables and herbs for the community and staff to tend and harvest. Thank you to Doug Spielberger, Pat Meisner, Susan Krantz, Lisa and Chris Szpendyk, Lee Schloss, Ray Schloss, Jason Hartson, David Gregg, and the Boy Scouts of Troop #319: Nathan Hartson (Jason’s son), Tyler Davis, Nathan Davis, and the scout leaders, Jennifer and Brian Davis.

Bryan Ziegler’s four year old daughter, Camryn, is one of the many dealing with Type 1 Diabetes. Bryan and his family, along with some McGraw-Kokosing team members, joined more than 8,000 people who gathered at Kings Island on June 6th to support and raise money to fi nd a cure for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The walk at Kings Island is one of the largest fundraising walks in the country. Including this year, the walk has raised over $940,000 which includes $2,375.00 that McGraw/Kokosing team members donated.

Thank You from the Shelton FamilyAs many of you are aware, during the early morning hours of Saturday, April 14th, a fi re engulfed my house, totally destroying it. We were, indeed, very fortunate to make it out. In a little more than one hour, my family and I lost every single possession we had, except the items of clothing we were wearing. All added up, 96 years of living and there was nothing left to show for it.

This letter is a thank you to all of the Kokosing family. We jumped from our house and watched our physical possessions vanish, but thanks to all of you, we have not wanted for one single thing since that night.

Your response, in so many diff erent ways, completely overwhelmed us and brought home just how fortunate we are to be a member of this company. I have fi lled out many of the donation forms over my 15 years here with Kokosing, but until now had never been on the receiving end of this company’s eff orts to help their team members.

The giving, in all the diff erent forms that it took, is just the physical manifestation of a much bigger fact that your desire and willingness to help a fellow team member. The money and gifts were very much needed as we had nothing, but the thing I want to make certain to convey, is that we are thankful for your compassion and your support. Words cannot convey the humility and thankfulness that my entire family now possess as a result of your eff orts. All I can say is THANK YOU!

EQUIPMENTGuests had the opportunity to operate a mini-excavator and check out some amazing equipment in our fl eet.

MECHANICS SHOPStudents were able to help use equipment to diagnose and monitor issues on vehicles.

WELD SHOPTools and creative weld projects were on display.

FORM SHOPThis area taught students about forms and highlighted the work of the Form Shop. Guests also had the opportunity to build miniature tool boxes.

HISTORYVisitors experienced Kokosing’s past through pictures and videos.

CO-OPSCo-ops gave presentations about what a career in the industry might look like based on their own experiences.

Parents also had the opportunity to ask about a career path, what sort of classes are needed and what job opportunities are and will be available.

The event was part of a larger eff ort put on by Ohio Governor Kasich’s Offi ce of Workforce transformation titled In-Demand Jobs Week. In-Demand Jobs Week is a statewide celebration of jobs, industries, and skills that are in-demand in Ohio.

Over 160 participated in the event, which also included lunch and the opportunity to receive a gift for visiting all stations. Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make this event possible. Together we are building the team 1 x 1.
