A NEW WORK METHODMore than a jargon and an engineering software, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new way of working, with a colla-borative approach, for all the stakeholders involved in a construction project. It is cen-tered on a 3D digital model with embedded data, which serves as a database for the work project and grows with different levels of refinement as the project evolves. If well conceived, the model can be a precious tool that provides great added value for the whole project life cycle, from the initial de-sign to demolition.

THE ADDED VALUE OF BIMBIM project design, articulated around a single, centralized and collaborative data-base, allows an excellent visualization of the project at all stages, integrating all the disci-plines involved and the different layers of the project (architecture, structure, networks, external providers, etc.). Thanks to the infor-mation attributed to each graphic element, this model can be explored intelligently to perform, for example, the following tasks:

■ Project communication ■ Conflict detection and resolution■ Dynamic generation of drawings and de-

tailing schedules■ Numerical modeling■ Work phasing■ "As-built” information■ Facility management

The possible applications of the model are countless and they will continue to evolve throughout the life cycle of the work project, provided that the model is appropriately designed, up to date and usable.

For this reason, careful management of mo-del creation, from the very start of the pro-ject, is essential. For a model development during a project design phase, the coordina-tion between design team, contractors and suppliers must be directed by a specialist. Lastly, the model with embedded data must "live" in alignment with the progress of the work project, and this requires periodic updating of the model.

ONGOING EVOLUTION The BIM world, at the leading edge of the in-dustry, is very dynamic and constantly evol-ving. The regulatory and legal frameworks, as well as the approach, vary greatly depending on the country and language. Moreover, the information available on BIM is abundant and sometimes contradictory. BG perma-nently monitors the regulatory and legal framework in the markets where the Group is active, with the aim of standardising methods, organising information exchange and promoting collaboration and best prac-tice around BIM.

Because of this constant evolution, a Project Owner needs to be able to count on expert advice when implementing BIM on a pro-ject, so as to ensure that the model created is adapted to his needs and maximizes the return on investment.

BG'S EXPERTISE AT YOUR SERVICEBy virtue of its experience in the BIM field, its solid establishment in different linguis-tic regions with distinct design traditions, its international activity with large construction groups and its excellent references in nume-rous types of project, the BG Group is your ideal partner for successful BIM implemen-tation.

SELECTED BIM REFERENCES

CIC CLINIC CLARENS,SWITZERLANDBG, working in association with GMT Architectes and an electrical engi-neering firm, provided engineering consulting services in the HVAC, MCR, sanitary and medical fluids disciplines and was responsible for the design team coordination related to the reno-vation and extension project of the CIC Clinic, in Clarens. The BG design, fully

developed in BIM, allowed the inte-gration of the various techniques in a coordinated manner with its partners, through to the detailed and construc-tion level of design works. A complex operation in a busy environ-ment, during which the guaranteed full functional use of the clinic was requi-red during the construction works, was one of the main project objectives.

CHENEVIERS IV WASTE TO ENERGY INCINERATION PLANT, GENEVA, SWITZERLANDWorking in partnership with the firms TBF (electromechanical engi-neers) and ASS Architects, BG is responsible for all the project im-plementation phases: Preliminary design, planning permission, tende-ring, execution design, implementa-tion and commissioning. Within the

design team it leads, BG handles all the tasks related to interdisciplinary coordination, BIM Management, civil engineering, building electricity and HVAC, as well as a part of the engi-neering services for the electrome-chanical equipment. The BIM models incorporate the construction phases, simulation and cost estimates of every stage of the project.

CANTONAL ROAD RC773 -MUNICIPALITY OF LUTRY, SWITZER-LAND A BIM variant for road route modifi-cation was also created, incorpora-ting data on the existing terrain, the adaptation of retaining works, land cut/fill volumes, slope parametri-zation, the quantification of take-

offs and estimation of development costs, as well as the extraction of longitudinal and transversal profiles based on the digitized model.

IVRY- PARIS XIII WASTE TO ENERGY FACILITY Conversion of the largest incinera-tion plant facility in Europe (700,000 t incinerated/year, 100,000 dwel-lings heated), located near Paris (Ivry sur Seine), into an organic mat-ter and energy recovery center. BG is responsible for General Project

Management tasks within a design team.

The spatial coordination performed by BG relies upon BIM models. The assignment of tasks and project monitoring is also performed based on this collaborative digital process.

WASTE METHANIZATION PLANTModeling the buildings and exte-riors of plants previously construc-ted to the customer's specifications makes it possible to evaluate the standard configurations, enabling quick decisions to be made, precise quantities to be extracted from the BIM models, and coordinated design concepts for the building services

and foundation elements to be pro-duced. Virtual reality and immersive and explicit representation of the frame provide support to the struc-tural engineers in their calculations.

With the BIM model, the customer is able to integrate, coordinate and fol-low the process throughout the en-tire operating life span of the plant.

LIMMATTAL HOSPITAL , SWITZER-LANDBG is responsible for the preliminary design, design development tende-ring, execution studies and site ma-nagement (structural design of the building, geotechnical design and water drainage concept).

In 2015, the project for the Limmat-tal Hospital (LimmiViva), one of the first major buildings constructed in Switzerland using the BIM ap-proach, won the BIM Silver Award in the “International Projects” category.
