The benefi ts of home insulation

It is always nice to get back home and enjoy some pleasant, healthy, natural warmth.

As well as increasing the pleasure of living in your home, insulation helps improve indoor

environmental quality (for example, by preventing and removing mould on walls) and allows

for signifi cant annual savings on utility costs and heating bills. In addition, it entitles you to

a number of government incentives and tax benefi ts on home renovation and maintenance.

Besides, insulation not only improves buildings in terms of thermal performance, but

also in terms of noise reduction, making your dwelling even more quiet and peaceful.

✔ Natural, evenly distributed warmth

✔ Savings on heating bills

✔ Tax incentives

✔ Mould removal or prevention

✔ Reduction of heat loss due to thermal bridges

✔ Better sound insulation from outside noise.

Thermal bridges: learning to deal with them

There are discontinuities in any building, i.e. parts of the structure with thermal properties

signifi cantly different from the rest of the envelope. Just think of how different insulation can

be if provided by a window or by a brick wall.

These discontinuities are also known as "thermal bridges”, and their presence has a negative

impact on insulation performance; indeed, they may cause up to a threefold increase in

heat transfer between the inside and outside of buildings, resulting in a considerably higher

heating costs.

In addition to reducing the well-being and comfort of the residents, thermal bridges can

also cause damage to the building itself, encouraging the development of surface

condensation, dust buildup and stains.

INSULATED MODULES

That's why it is so important to avoid the formation of "thermal bridges" during construction.

In the case of renovation, it is good to use thermal imaging to identify the areas of greater

heat loss, so as to take appropriate action.

✔ Reduced durability of materials (exposed to moisture and subject to expansion);

✔ Reduced home living comfort, due to differences between air temperature

and wall temperature;

✔ Formation of lines and stains on walls, due to dust build-up in the colder

regions of the building (themophoresis):

✔ Possible formation of mould (due to surface condensation);

✔ Increased energy consumption. (Between 20% and 30% of

total heat loss).

Home insulation: where to start

There are many and diverse steps to take to improve your home's thermal performance.

It is important to focus on the major causes of heat loss,, and then deal with the minor

ones.

For example, some houses are equipped with a high-effi ciency boiler, only to realise that this

advantage is not preserved with adequate insulation.

Here is a list of the most important actions to be taken and, therefore, the order in which you

should take them.

1) roof insulation;

2) Insulating door and window frames (insulated modules);

3) Using window frames and glass with low "K value";

4) Insulating the building with an external wall insulation system;

5) Using high effi ciency radiators with thermostatic control;

6) Enhanced performance boilers.

Useful concepts to make the right choices

K value: we measure the heat escaping through the walls of our house

Imagine two rooms, separated by a surface (eg, the inside and outside of a house, separated

by a wall). Now also imagine that these two rooms have stable temperatures, differing from

each other by one degree Kelvin. In this case, the“K value”, also known as transmittance,

measures the amount of heat that - in a time interval t - passes through 1m² of wall. That is

why the lower the “K value”, the higher the insulating value.

Thermal conductivity and resistance: what transfers heat and what doesn't

Conductivity (indicated as - lambda) measures the ability of a material to transfer heat, and

is expressed in W/m2·K. Resistance (designated as R), by contrast, measures how easily heat

fl ows through a specifi c material, and is expressed in m2·K/W. It is very important to take into

account thermal conductivity and resistance values when designing a house, as they make it

possible to fi gure out in advance what the building's thermal performance will be.

Pronema's solution

Pronema's solution to improve your home's thermal and acoustic insulation is to use insulated

modules (or reveals), consisting of two vertical elements and two horizontal elements to be

applied around the edge of window and French window openings. They replace traditional

and ineffi cient frames and subframes and can be installed either in the construction of new

houses or used for renovations.

These insulated modules are designed to ensure that there are no gaps or thermal bridges

between the outer wall and window frames, thereby avoiding any heat loss in winter or poor

heat insulation during the summer. Precisely because window reveals increase the thermal

effi ciency of buildings - reducing energy consumption and environmental impact - you may

benefi t from government incentives to reduce their cost and recover it entirely in just a few

years through the considerable savings you can make on heating and cooling costs. Window

reveals also improve sound insulation inside the house, making it even more comfortable and

quiet.

The effi ciency of Pronema solutions is guaranteed by the materials used: XPS (extruded

polystyrene foam), EPS (expanded polystyrene), fi bre cement and poplar plywood. Combined

together, they create a single, highly compact volume with very low K-value. The window

frame is fi nally applied to the insulated module. As a fi nal fi nishing touch, any gaps between

the window frame and the module and between the module and the wall are fi lled with

polyurethane foam, so as to further increase heat and sound insulation and the resulting

comfort and well-being that users will experience in their house.

The materials used for the production of insulated modules and boxes

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). Expanded Polystyrene - commonly known as polystyrene

- consists of small beads compressed into sheets. It is obtained by immersing polystyrene

granules into water and adding pentane gas. The compound is then compressed until the

pentane penetrates into the granules, which, after being heated, swell up and take their fi nal

shape.

Because of its hygro-thermal properties, this material is ideal for insulating buildings from

cold, heat, humidity, and ambient noise.

Extruded Polystyrene Foam (XPS). Although solid and non-viscous, it has a porous, foam-

like appearance. It is obtained by immersing polystyrene granules into a special machine,

where they are melted, and into which pressurised gas is blown. This process gives the

material a spongy appearance, while making it fairly light (with a density of 35 kg/m3).

Because of these physical properties, it makes an excellent thermal and acoustic insulation

material, ideal for the construction industry.

Ecological fi bre cement. Versatile and very reliable, this material provides excellent

insulation effi ciency - in terms of both heat and sound - and is therefore used for making

the insulating layers inside reveals. Composed of cement and stabilised organic fi bres, it is

fl exible, crushproof, and non-combustible. It can withstand severe weather conditions and,

being breathable, it helps reduce condensation.

Poplar plywood. A plywood made from wod layers peeled off from the tree trunk. The

crossed orientation of these layers make it possible to alternate the wood's natural grain,

thus obtaining a uniformly resistant material in all directions and at all points. It is used for

making sub-frames, which act as a housing for windows themselves. Poplar wood is the

most suitable type of wood for this purpose, since it has a low transmittance value and is not

particularly sensitive to expansion, deformation, and moisture absorption.

Guides and anchors. Aluminium guides run along the reveal, and are used for fi xing iron

anchors. One anchor is fi xed every 60 cm or so along the height of the reveal, which will then

be walled to support the whole structure. The “guide/anchor” combination gives structural

rigidity to the entire window frame.

The advantages of Pronema's solution at a glance...

...tailor-made solutions

Pronema insulated modules stand out for their uniqueness. They are literally unique, as they

are individually designed and made to measure. There are no standard parts. All components

are designed and manufactured according to the requirements of each customer and the

features of each building. As a result, they can be tailored to any situation.

...materials known for their effi ciency

The materials used for insulating houses are well known. This makes it possible to learn

about their technical specifi cations, to test their effectiveness and know that all the materials

used are safe and feature high effi ciency in terms of engineering and construction.

...guaranteed heat and sound insulation

After each installation, Pronema certifi es the materials used and their insulating properties.

The heat and sound insulation certifi cate defi nes the K-value of each component used to

ensure compliance with the building's energy needs.

Expanded polyurethane foam. It appears as a clear, very fl uffy foam. This synthetic foam

prevents the passage of air and moisture. It is used to fi ll the gaps between the frame and

subframe and thus complete the installation of reveals. This avoids the formation of drafts

and thermal bridges.

Iron cage. Shaped and welded iron elements to increase

structural strength.

To choose colours, please refer to Pronema's shutter colour chart.

Colours 6, 13, 19, 20, 22, 24 and 25 not never guaranteed against discolouration and

deformation; a reinforcement strap is required for these colours.

Because of the special processing involved, the grain of wood-effect colours 14, 16, 18, 25,

26 and 28 may differ from the samples provided in the colour chart.

Due to the peculiarity of the processed material, we cannot accept any complaint concerning

changes in weight.

Shutters measuring more than 2 metres in width are not guaranteed.

A reinforcement strap is required for shutters of more than 1.4 metres in width.

PRONEMA 80

CATALOGUES

This catalogue and price list cancels and replaces the

previous version as from 01/01/2015 and is the only

one recognised as valid and effective by Pronema S.r.l..

All dimensions in the catalogue are in millimetres or

centimetres. Every indication, drawing or picture of the

products in Pronema S.r.l. catalogues and/or price lists is

for indicative purposes only and is not binding, and may

be changed without notice at any time. NO part of these

catalogues or price lists may be reproduced without the

prior written permission of Pronema S.r.l..

PROFILE TOLERANCES

Dimensional tolerances are typical of machined aluminium

and/or steel products and depend on the machinery we

use. For this reason, differences within a range of +/- 3mm

should be considered compliant.

ORDERS

Orders are understood as a reservation of products and

do not bind Pronema S.r.l. to deliver all or part the order.

Any order implies full acceptance of our sales conditions.

As our goods are made to measure, cancellations will

not be accepted where the goods have already been

manufactured. Orders must be placed exclusively by fi lling

out our forms, indicating the product code as specifi ed

in the catalogue; only the details provided in the order

confi rmation will be binding for Pronema S.r.l.

PRICES

All prices in this price list are in Euro and are net of VAT and

any other tax. The price shown in the order confi rmation is

ex our warehouse in Comignago. According to fl uctuations

in raw material prices, the end price shall be that indicated

in the order confi rmation; because of this, we may vary the

conditions specifi ed herein without prior notice. Any import

taxes, customs duties, and other taxes relating to the

country of destination will be fully borne by the buyer. Any

statements, promises and guarantees from persons who

do not offi cially represent the company (employees, sales

representatives, agents and business agent) and differing

from the terms contained herein, are not in any way binding

for Pronema S.r.l..

SHIPMENTS

All products are shipped freight collect, unless otherwise

agreed. The goods are shipped at the buyer's own risk,

even if sold carriage paid, and Pronema is released from all

liability in case of accidents or incidents. The recipient must

check the goods on arrival and notify any damage to the

carrier, even when the goods are delivered carriage free. For

production reasons, the goods ordered may be delivered on

a different date and with different lots.

PACKAGING

Standard packaging is free of charge, while special

packaging will be chrged extra at cost.

DELIVERY

Pronema S.r.l. agrees to comply with the terms of delivery

specifi ed in the order confi rmation. The causes which

prevent or delay the shipment of materials such as, by way of

example but not limited to, delayed supplies of raw materials,

import bans, strikes (including company strikes) and other

causes which prevent or delay their production and/or

processing, are considered as force majeure events and in

such cases Pronema S.r.l. cannot be held responsible for

delays in deliveries. In the above cases, Pronema S.r.l. may

delay deliveries until after the causes of the delay have been

removed. Once the delivery by courier has been accepted,

the goods are considered delivered.

PAYMENTS

The amounts shown on the invoices cannot be rounded.

Bank charges are paid by the buyer. Although accepted

by Pronema S.r.l., checks or bills will be considered as a

payment only once they have been successfully cashed.

If the customer defaults on a payment, default interest will

be automatically charged to the extent provided by Italian

Legislative Decree 231/2002, without the need for a letter of

formal notice. A default of more than sixty days will constitute

a major breach, and will result in the termination, without the

need for prior notice, of any supplies or current contracts,

although not related to the payments concerned, subject

to compensation for damages. In the event of an extended

payment, failure to comply with a single deadline, in addition

to the aforementioned consequences, will automatically

result in forfeiture of the agreement, making the entire

outstanding amount immediately due.

WARRANTY

Pronema S.r.l. guarantees that the products sold have

been carefully checked and tested where required, and

they are in any case covered by warranty according

to the law, from the date of delivery specifi ed in the

accompanying document. The warranty covers all

original defects in materials and workmanship and is

limited to defects occurring when the product is properly

used for its intended purpose. THIS warranty does

not include damage caused by improper installation,

misuse, alteration or unauthorised modifi cations to the

components and any other tampering. This warranty

does not cover damage to surfaces caused by use of

abrasives or acids or by failure to clean and/or lack of

maintenance. It cannot be guaranteed that there will

be no differences between colour baths and different

prints. In terms of correspondence between colours, our

“aluminium colour chart” for profi les, our “technical fabrics

chart” for technical fabrics, and our “swatch” samples for

soft fabrics shall prevail. For each claim, the product must

be accompanied by the relevant document.

CLAIMS

The buyer must check the goods immediately on receipt

and make sure there is no damage. Under penalty of

cancellation of the warranty, any claims related to non-

compliance and defects must be notifi ed by registered

letter within eight days of receiving the goods, and

the allegedly defective product(s) shall be returned to

Pronema S.r.l. to allow the company to undertake any

appropriate inspections. If, as a result of such inspections,

the alleged defect was confi rmed to exist, Pronema S.r.l.

will replace the defective goods free of charge, provided

that they are returned ex warehouse. We will not accept

claims on products and/or fabrics which have been

modifi ed or cut.

RETURNS

Pronema S.r.l. will not accept any returned goods unless

previously authorised in writing and with our company's

authorisation number, and in any case only where the

goods have been shipped freight prepaid. Goods returned

for repair will be accepted only if perfectly cleaned, washed

and complete with all information required to carry out the

repair.

LIABILITY

Pronema S.r.l. shall not be liable for any damage to

persons, animals or property arising from non-compliance

with safety requirements, or improper installation, and/or

installation without carrying out the appropriate checks.

APPLICABLE LAW - JURISDICTION

Any dispute will be resolved under the Italian law. The court

of Novara and its branch offi ce in Borgomanero shall have

exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes.

RETENTION OF TITLE

The seller shall retain title to all goods delivered until

payment has been received in full.
