Building Dynamic Landscape Pastel Paintings From life and photo Bonnie Griffith, NPS, PSWC Do you want to take your pastel paintings to the next level? Experience the values you will learn in composition and color using tools such as thumbnail sketches and Notan drawings to build strong com- positions working both plein air and in the studio. Learn to see more than the ordinary and create dy- namic work by looking beyond the scene and using shapes and values to build those landscape paintings. Make the ordi- nary, extraordinary! This workshop will give you the tools to create impressionistic paintings that glow as you learn to use color and technique to build those brilliant paintings! Daily demos and kind leadership by the instructor with plenty of indi- vidual instruction will include utilizing different grounds, paper and underpaintings, giving students the time to experiment and practice learned techniques. Daily discussion and/or critiques included to assist in the learning process. All skill levels are welcome. Be prepared to share with Bonnie your goals of this workshop and what you want to focus on by email, prior to the week prior to the workshop to maximize your experience. ([email protected]) Questions: 509- 301-1188 or email. We will do some plein air studies at the workshop site as part of the process to building dynamic works; weather permit- ting. These studies will be mostly thumbnail and Notans. Supply list: Professional grade soft pastels (Sennelier, Ludwig, Unison, Great American, Schmincke, Blue Earth, Rembrandt {as ex- ample} and in any mixed combination) Hard Pastels (a few sticks of black, gray, ocher, red, ivory and other favorite colors) 91% alcohol Brushes: Sponge brushes (1”) for toning/washing the paper, old ½” oil brush used to remove excess pastel, 1/2” or 1” brush to do underpaintings with. Sketchbook for Notans and thumbnail sketching, notes, etc Markers: 3-4 gradients from black to light gray for Notans (Tombow, Spectrum Noir or similar brands) Latex or Nitrile disposable gloves (No vinyl gloves) Easel Art board to tape paper to Artist’s black or white tape Fixative: Krylon workable fix Apron, comfortable clothes, jacket, hat, etc for your comfort in and out of the studio. Reference photos: Only landscape photos you have taken UArt 400 paper 8x10 or 9x12 neutral color Willingness to learn and have some fun!
